Corbin Burnes or Woodruff getting moved?
Mark P
7:23
At least one of them, yeah.  Between Woodruff's injury and Counsell leaving, it does feel like the Brewers might be heading into a sea change, if not necessarily a total teardown.

7:23
Who could the White Sox get for Cease if they traded with the Orioles?
Mark P
7:25
For two years of Cease, maybe Jordan Westburg and two lower-level prospects?  Since Chicago has such a glaring need in the infield.  I dunno if Baltimore is willing to move Westburg for anyone, or if he's not quite on their untouchables list

Does Sixto Sanchez even have any trade value anymore? Marlins have lots of SP and Sixto just dosen't fit in.
Mark P
7:26
Not really, apart from being a throw-in as part of a larger trade package.  Sixto has thrown one minor league inning in the last three seasons, and unfortunately his career might even be in jeopardy at this point

Could a max fried trade pull off a Jordan lawlar or Marcelo mayer? Both teams wants top end pitching rn and as a Braves fan I love max and I want to resign him but there’s no way I let him go in free agency and only receive a 4th round pick
Mark P
7:27
Neither the D'Backs or Red Sox are moving an elite infield prospect for one season of Fried

Are we a good fit for hector neris?
Mark P
7:29
Spoiler alert, the O's were my pick for Neris in the predictions contest.  He can work as either a setup man or as a closer candidate, as they figure out how to replace Bautista

ChiSox initially indicated they’d try to compete quickly under new front office, but now reports say they’ll cut spending, and there’s not much in the pipeline. Do they trade Cease and possibly Robert, Jr. to go full tank?
Mark P
7:31
Cutting payroll doesn't necessarily mean tanking, and given how Jerry Reinsdorf wants to win soon, another rebuild likely isn't happening.  It does seem refreshing that Getz acknowledged his team isn't very good, frankly, so I consider that a positive sign for the team's immediate future.

Do you think there is a decent chance the Cardinals will sign one of Jordon Montgomery, Sonny Gray, or Aaron Nola? Do you think it's possible for the Cardinals to sign two of those guys?
Mark P
7:32
Two no, but one is a very strong possibility

7:33
Does Rhys Hoskins make sense as a buy low guy for the nats like Jeimer Candelario was for them last year?
Mark P
7:34
Two different circumstances.  Jeimer was a buy-low because he struggled so badly in 2022, whereas Hoskins is a buy-low due to injury.  My guess is that more contenders will be open to signing Hoskins, and it would seem logical that he'd prefer to sign with a potential winner than with Washington

Does the Padres have financial problem?
Twinsfan
7:36
In regards to the twins scalling back, why or how do people confuse this and think that means rebuilding? I have seen people write articles about twins trading Buxton when he has a full no trade clause for one and specifically requested one because he didn't want to leave Minnesota. I have also read articles who seem to believe twins would just give away Polanco or Kepler and or they don't have much value when twins literally under PBO Derek Falvey don't operate that way. They didn't just bring in Correa to take players like Buxton or Royce Lewis away from him. Or trade Kepler / Polanco back without getting Value back
Mark P
7:37
People love trade speculation, as our site's entire existence can attest.  So when a team is known to be cutting payroll, all sorts of wild trade theories can get thrown into the wind.

I agree that the Twins won't be blowing things up in any way.  Though, frankly, if they got a good offer for Buxton, I'd think they would at least ask him about waiving the NT clause

Cease, Kopech, Bummer, Jimenez, Moncada. How many are still on the roster come opening day? Any other clear(ish) trade candidates I missed?
Mark P
7:39
In a sign that I'm maybe putting in too many hours at work, I actually had a dream the other night that the Yankees acquired Cease and Jimenez for a trade package that included Gleyber Torres and some other players lost in the fog of my subconscious.  So if that trade actually happens, I'm clairvoyant.

Just because the Sox need pitching so much, I'd guess Cease and Kopech are less likely to be dealt, of anyone.  But Eloy, Bummer, or a sell-low on Moncada, sure.

You think its realistic the Dodgers could sign Ohtani and Yamamoto? Or more realistic signing Ohtani and trading for a starter like Burnes?
Mark P
7:41
"Big signing + big trade" does seem like a more plausible scenario than LA making two big signings.  Or, maybe even one BIG move and then multiple lower-level acquisitions, which has usually been Friedman's winter strategy
Quintin
7:41
When do you think the first major signing will happen? Winter meetings? Perhaps before?
Mark P
7:41
Well before.  We're not going almost a full month without some major news breaking.

Where does Severino end up?
Mark P
7:43
This seems like a classic Dodgers/Rays/Giants salvage project
Jordan Montgomery
7:43
Where do you think I will end up?
Mark P
7:44
My guess is Texas.  They still need pitching, they obviously had a mutually great time with Montgomery over the last few months, and ownership is willing to spend
Nats Fan
7:46
If the Nats non-tender Robles, Call, and Kieboom, do they have any trade stock left?
Mark P
7:46
Plenty.  Harvey, Finnegan, maybe Tanner Rainey, or maybe Lane Thomas if the Nats wanted a longer-term asset (Thomas is only controlled through 2025)
Matt (Oceanside)
7:47
For the record, I believe Ohtani will sign with the Dodgers, but playing devil’s advocate, the Dodgers have about 75 million tp
spend before hitting those tax penalties again. If the sign Ohtani for say a 50 mil AAV, that doesn’t leave a lot of room to fix the rotation and the OF. Do you think they care about the tax threshold this year and do they have enough major league ready talent to fill holes?
Mark P
7:48
The Dodgers absolutely would've loved to have under the tax line last year, but that didn't happen due to the Bauer ruling.  But, that's not going to impact their quest to get Ohtani, since he's the kind of special player they'll pursue first and worry about the tax implications later
7:49
Also, Freeman and Betts are the only players on the Dodgers' books beyond 2025.  So their long-term financial picture is pretty clear, even if obviously an Ohtani/Freeman/Betts trio alone accounts for a lot of salary

Kelenic, Woo and Miller for Soto? Who says no?
Mark P
7:51
My guess is that San Diego says yes to that offer, since it reloads their rotation and maybe if Kelenic is for real, he can kinda replicate Soto's offense.

However, my suspicion is that the Mariners probably don't do this for just one year of Soto.  Moving two pitchers thins out the 2024 depth, for one, not to mention losing two controllable arms like Miller and Woo.
