What's the deal with MLBTR pessimism on the Mets FA
Mark P
7:54
I think the guys had a fair amount of free agents going to the Mets in their picks.  By their own account, the Mets are taking some kind of a step back in 2024, and they just hired a PBO known more for trading than for big signings.  So while I do think Stearns will bring in a couple of free agents (and maybe at least one big name), it won't be a spending spree

If the Astros were to trade bregman what could they get in return.
Mark P
7:56
He's a free agent after 2024, but Houston would still get quite a nice return in a trade.  But, this is the same Astros team that let Correa, Springer, and Verlander all just walk in free agency, so they probably wouldn't hesitate to play the rest of the year out with Bregman rather than trade him early.  Dealing Bregman then creates a big hole at 3B that has to be filled.

How much is the ongoing problems with Ballys Sports going to affect the individual teams going foward?
Mark P
7:59
Undoubtedly quite a bit, and it isn't yet clear if Diamond will be able to make the payments to the remainder of teams on TV deals, or if we'll see more situations like Arizona or San Diego
Bendix

Who do you see Marlins going after?
Mark P
8:01
Great question, as I'll be fascinated to see how Bendix operates.  Since Sherman is so focused on building up the farm system, we can probably rule out any big expenditures, so trades seem the likelier route.
8:02
As I wrote in the post when Bendix was hired, taking a season to step back and access wouldn't be a surprise, with an eye towards contending again in 2025 when Alcantara is back.

As a Blue Jays fan, do you think it would make sense to trade Vlad and/or Bo?
Mark P
8:05
It makes sense on some levels.  I'd be more open to moving Guerrero than Bichette after last season, but then again, I was saying exactly the opposite after 2022.  But, moving a first base-only player makes more sense from a baseball perspective than moving a shortstop, so I'd say trading Vlad makes more sense this particular winter.

Granted, it would be a sell-low since Guerrero was only okay last season.  But if the Jays have any inkling that Guerrero might've hit a wall or might not be the superstar-level talent everyone predicted, trading him now might be a wiser move than trading him a year from now, if he has another underwhelming season

What chance would you say either Pereira or Peraza is gettable from the Yanks? One much more available than the other?
Mark P
8:07
Interesting question.  My perception is that Pereira might be more available since Peraza has had a longer shelf life as a top prospect, but then again Peraza has less of a route to playing time in New York's crowded infield

Does Hader break Diaz’s contract record for a relief pitcher?

I believe he will

Burnes to O’s for package to include Mayo or Holliday?
Mark P
8:11
Holliday is absolutely not being dealt anywhere.  Mayo for a year of Burnes also might seem like a reach

Of their current roster, who should the Giants retain to continue to build around besides the young catcher Patrick Bailey and starter Logan Webb?
Mark P
8:14
Estrade, Doval, Wade, Luciano and Matos among the younger guys, Harrison chief among the young pitchers.
8:15
Estrada, that is

SF has some good talent on the roster, but it's inarguable that they need some more help.  I agree with the notion that they should lock down not just a star, but even a couple of just solid everyday players.

Trade Elly De La Cruz for pitching? To me he’s got the highest ceiling but showed virtually no improvement after his hot start in June. Surely other teams would still be high on him as he is only 21.
Mark P
8:17
This would be a bold but perhaps very brilliant move for the Reds.  Offering EDLC would open the door for pretty much any trade avenues the Reds would want to pursue, and a case can be made that between Marte and Arroyo, Cincinnati already has enough depth to alleviate the risk of dealing Elly.

Does posting money paid to Japanese teams count toward the salary of the team that signs the Japanese player?

Nope

Been hearing rumors about Cleveland possibly trading Quantrill. I think that would be ill advised considering how young their rotation is especially if they trade Bieber as is being discussed. Quantrill is a valuable innings-eating starter and will help the younger pitchers. If they did trade Quantrill what would the return be and would they get fair value considering he was injured last year?
Mark P
8:20
I agree that moving both Bieber and Quantrill doesn't seem realistic, and dealing Quantrill instead of Bieber might not make sense since it doesn't seem like Bieber is staying in Cleveland beyond 2024.

The Guardians wouldn't turn down a huge offer for Quantrill, of course, but I don't think such offers would really be on the table for a pitcher coming off a down year

No higher than 10 percent

Is Victor Scott II’s quick ascent to highly touted prospect putting more pressure on the Cards to deal from their OF depth? Is it realistic to think he has a shot as early as Spring Training to make a case for making the OD roster?
Mark P
8:22
If anything, I could see Scott being traded this offseason, if the Cards feel they're selling high on his potential

Glyber Torres to Red Sox for Alex Verdugo? Any truth to these rumors ?
Mark P
8:24
Not in a one-for-one, but maybe as part of a multi-player trade, it makes sense

How soon till the Nashville Stars start playing games?
Mark P
8:26
I thought hard about making some kind of "MLB gains a team/Chris Gaines" joke here, but couldn't figure out the wording.

Anyway, once the Rays' ballpark is officially being built and once the Athletics' situation is worked out, the league will start focusing on expansion.  Nashville seems like a big favorite for a new team, and my guess is that within a decade, there will be big league baseball in Music City

Who is playing 3B in DC opening day?
Mark P
8:28
Kieboom.  The Nats will probably acquire another veteran third baseman (or 3B-capable utilityman) for depth purposes, but they'll want to give Kieboom one more shot

Do the Blue Jays make sense for a Juan Soto trade? Who would they have to give up and would it be worth it for one year?
Mark P
8:30
As a Jays fan who is friends with many other Jays fans, believe me, there have been plenty of texts and ideas shared about this very subject.

Soto for Vlad straight-up is a popular suggestion, and one I'd be open to doing if it wasn't for San Diego's financial problems.
As in moving Soto but adding Vlad doesn't cut all that much off of the Padres' books

Is there a chance you see the royals dealing Salvador Perez? I am curious to see how much the new owner is willing to spend
