Given Gray's past issues pitching in New York, quite doubtful

Could the Tigers really sign Yamamoto? What would the terms be?
Mark P
7:54
Detroit seems like a longshot to get Yamamoto, but crazier things have happened.  If they believe he's a special kind of player (as many do), then this might a situation where they're willing to make the kind of $200MM bid it'll likely take to sign him

Ezequiel Duran fits as a MIF for a number of teams in dire need…who trades for him?
Mark P
7:56
He also in pretty well for Texas as a utilityman, so I can see the Rangers hanging onto him unless someone comes forth with a particularly nice offer

Should Marlins move me to SS and get a CF, or trade Garrett for long term SS
Mark P
8:00
My suspicion is that Garrett isn't going anywhere, since the Marlins need all the SP help they can get with Alcantara out for 2024.

Chisholm is a difficult case, since he wasn't a particularly good defensive shortstop, and he might yet develop into something in CF with more time.  It might be that second base is his best position, except Miami already has Arraez there.

Keep in mind that with Bendix now running the front office, the plans for Chisholm could indeed change, and the Marlins might put a greater focus on defense (like the Rays often have over the years).  For now, however, the top priority is probably just for Chisholm to get healthy for a full year

is their a chance Baltimore could trade for someone like Corbin Burnes or Shane Bieber
Mark P
8:03
Absolutely.  This seems like a likelier pitching move than signing a prominent starter, as the Orioles haven't yet exhibited a willingness to spend.

I forgot to post that poll earlier, based on that one commenter's screen name.  Only the toughest topics here at MLBTR!

How do you see the RSN deal impacting the Rangers? It seems like there is a chance to increase exposure right when team is really good. Bigger brand, more tickets, and more buts in seats but likely less dollars from TV rights.
Mark P
8:07
It'll certainly be an issue, and it speaks to the larger question about the future of televised sports.  In terms how it might hurt the Rangers for 2024, certainly they must've had this on the radar at least since Diamond's financial problems arose a year ago, so I assume some plans have been made
8:08
As in, maybe the Rangers don't go totally wild with spending this winter, but this is also a team that just banked a lot of playoff revenue

Redlegs are on an upward trajectory, excellent young hitters with a tendency to produce in the clutch but the pitching hurt them last year despite that whole thing where Luke Weaver put up an ERA of 10 over a stretch and won every single one, India is obviously being shopped, do you think they should kickstart things and trade for young pitching?
Jonathan India
8:08
Where will I be to start the season and what will I be traded for
Mark P
8:09
The Reds should absolutely be looking to get pitching, and yeah, I do think India is being dealt.  Nick Krall wasn't lying the other day when he talked about India's importance to the (still unproven) roster, but obviously no exec is going to outright say a guy is being shopped

If pitchers had to drink a beer before every inning and hitters had to drink a beer before every at bat, would the stats deviate greatly from the “mean”? I’m leaning advantage towards pitchers.

Could you see Cody Bellinger or Blake Snell going to the Astros?
Mark P
8:12
Nope.  Neither fits the Astros' usual kinds of signings, and Dana Brown has already said that Houston doesn't have all that much to spend

At some point, we need a permanent story about the Dodgers and Yankees “being in” on every free agent and trade candidate.
Mark P
8:14
It's more than just these two. Obviously it depends on how you define "checked in," or "showed interest," or "made calls about" or other common offseason parlance.  In the broader picture, teams touch base (there's more terminology!) with agents about a wide array of their clients, so technically, most teams "discuss" everyone

Would you sign Anderson and move Story back to second
Mark P
8:14
I'd just use Anderson as a second baseman, and keep Story at short.
Jose Oquendo
8:15
How would you feel about moving Vlad for multiple pieces to fill some holes?  1Bmen are easier to come by than some other positions.
Mark P
8:16
I wouldn't be adverse to this idea, under the right circumstances.  As I wrote in my Jays offseason outlook, this might be a good time to move Guerrero while he still has two years of control left and that superstar ceiling in place.  If Guerrero has another only okay-ish year in 2023, suddenly it's down to one year of control and a wider belief that Guerrero might have already peaked
8:17
Now, obviously such a trade is a big risk for the Blue Jays.  If Guerrero did break out as an MVP candidate with another team, then the Jays absolutely have to have one or two of the pieces acquired in the trade pan out

8:18
Seems like the Giants are intent on signing Chapman quickly, possibly to bolster their pitch to Ohtani? “See, we’re making moves!” If so, does it help their case?
Mark P
8:19
Can't hurt, though in a market so thin on position players, I could see Chapman taking his time.  It's a classic Scott Boras move to have his clients wait in free agency to drive up prices, and it might work especially well in a winter with relatively little in the way of reliable everyday talent

Who gets more plate appearances in the big leagues in 2024: Cowser or Kjerstad?
Mark P

Kjerstad.  The O's will try to make room for him even if they don't trade from the current outfield mix
Darren
8:21
Bieber’s going nowhere now they’ve moved Quantrill. Guards don’t have a lot of SP depth.
Mark P
8:22
Not if Bieber is dealt for pitching.  If you're the Dodgers, for instance, and need some experienced SP help right away, you can move one of the Sheehan/Grove/Stone crew as part of a Bieber deal.

Kyle wright gone. When healthy a #2 starter on a team that needs pitching for a relief pitching project???
Mark P
8:25
"When healthy" is the big caveat there, since Wright will miss all of 2024.  And as solid as Wright was in 2022, it was also the only good season of his career.

With Atlanta clearly trying to move some money off the books, getting rid of Wright made sense, and Kowar is also a former top-100 prospect.  Could be that the Braves staff feels Kowar can blossom with a change of scenery
