Why would the Jays bring in Hale when Mattingly was already there?
Mark P
7:53
"Associate manager" and "bench coach" are kind of nebulous roles, with duties that vary from team to team (and some teams don't even have "associate managers").

Basically, Mattingly looks to be taking on more of a role in working with hitters, so that he might his primary focus while Hale is more of a traditional bench coach.

Could San Francisco pull of some combination of Ohtani, Yamamoto, and Lee? Would be a huge upgrade to the offense and bring the star(s) to the bay they have been missing.
Mark P
7:54
Getting all three seems like an awfully tall order, but getting Lee and one of the other two isn't inconceivable

Will the Cardinals sign or trade for two starting pitchers better than the back-end guys they have?
Mark P
7:55
STL will still look to acquire one frontline ace type, now that they've built in their veteran depth.  If anything, I can maybe see the Cards now being more open to dealing one of the young pitching prospect types in a trade, now that they've patched up two holes in the rotation

When is Thanksgiving in Canada?  What do you eat for Thanksgiving in Canada?
Mark P
7:56
Our Thanksgiving is second Monday of October, and we eat all of the same traditional stuff as Americans.  The only main difference is that on our Thanksgiving, we don't watch the Detroit Lions lose a football game in the afternoon.

(I'm a Packers fan, this is my one time to gloat all season!)

Are the Guardians really going to roll out Kwan/Straw/Laureano next season?
Mark P
7:58
I find it hard to believe the Guards wouldn't get a true power bat into their lineup, with the outfield looking like a logical spot.  Laureano isn't a bad player to have around, and ultimately Straw is probably a fourth outfielder at most, so another move surely has to be coming

Do the Dbacks have enough faith in Lawlar to move Perdomo in the off-season?
Mark P
7:59
Adding Suarez gives some flexibility for this, but Perdomo is a pretty decent player in his own right, and great depth if Lawlar isn't quite ready for prime time

Sign Hoskins, one of Wood, Paxton, or Miley, and whatever haul we could get for Burnes; does that make Milwaukee competitive enough to win the NL Central?
Mark P
8:04
Obviously depends on the Burnes trade return.  But Hoskins is a nice add, and any of those pitchers helps (if obviously not to the level of Burnes or Woodruff)

Could the Marlins be a sleeper team for Juan Soto? They have the prospects it would take and a 1 year $30 million contract for a super star to put people in the seats and energize that club seems like it would be worth the investment.
Mark P
8:05
This doesn't really sound like a Peter Bendix type of move, especially given how ownership has stressed rebuilding the farm system
Snell
8:05
Am I several teams 2nd or 3rd option?
Mark P
8:06
This seems like it might be the case.  Montgomery doesn't have the QO attached, Yamamoto is younger, and Ohtani is Ohtani.  And the Phillies naturally had lots of built-in familiarity with Nola.
8:07
Even if this is the case, it doesn't mean Snell's market will be impacted at all.  If anything, it might help, given all the many pitching-needy teams who miss out on YY/Montgomery/Ohtani

Yes

8:10
Do the Braves have the pieces to get Juan Soto? Their farm is pretty thin.
Mark P
8:13
Atlanta could offer SD something from their pitching depth, but I'm assuming that since Waldrep and Smith-Shawver are off limits, the Padres might not be too jazzed about Elder, Dodd, Winans.

I do kind of like the idea of Soto to the Braves as sort of a revamped version of Anthopoulos' strategy of signing veteran free agents to short-term deals.  It could be that the Braves' moves to open up payroll space are not just to afford Soto, but maybe to take on another San Diego contract?
Ah, chat window idle speculation!

how possible is it for the Athletics move to Vegas to still be stayed by the NV teachers thing
Mark P
8:14
The move seems far enough down the road that some kind of deal will be made.  Though the headline of "Nevada Voters Prefer Straight A's To Oakland A's" is pretty funny.

If the Red Sox finish in last place again will Cora be shown the door?

Are the Guardians rebuilding?
Mark P
8:18
No, their front office plan is to never really "rebuild," but keep reloading with young talent and staying in perpetual contention.  Obviously the plan doesn't always work since the Guardians have been set back by injuries in two of the last three years, but they're not going into a true rebuild.
And nor should they, really.  With Jose Ramirez on a team-friendly deal, the Naylor brothers, and the ability to constantly generate good pitching from the farm system.

im convinced the Braves will sign Josh Hader. On paper, Iglesias is their guy and they’ve already spent heavily on the bullpen. But Iglesias as the 8th inning guy or as a trade piece? I dunno, it just feeeeels super Anthopoloulish. Thoughts?? Thx!
Mark P
8:19
Spending a ton of money on a long-term contract for a relief pitcher doesn't sound Anthopoulos-ish at all

Hope all had a great Thanksgiving.    Obviously the Yanks Need left handed hitting, a Lead Off guy and a LF.    I go back to Andrew Benintendi, since I get the feeling Chicago will reload this year..    He is making 15-18 Mil over the next 4 years.   What would it take for the Yanks to be interested and How much would Chicago be willing "pay down" what he is owed.    The yanks have to give up a higher Prospects (not pitching) except maybe a Gil.    What do you think?
Mark P
8:21
I think you're drastically over-estimating Benintendi's trade value.  With his trade value and coming off a replacement-level season, the White Sox would have to eat a very big chunk of the contract to move him.
And I don't think the Yankees would be particularly interested
