No idea.  I think during the early days of the pandemic or during the lockout, I hit 2.5 hours on a few chats because there was absolutely nothing else going on

Turkey or ham?

What are the Mariners thinking?  Trading Geno for a guy who can't hit his body weight.  Is it time for Stanton to tell the team to someone who wants to spend even just a little bit of money to win?
Mark P
8:24
I have just enough reservations about Suarez to like this trade for both sides.  Suarez's power dropoff last year is a big concern, so it might not be a bad move for the M's to part ways.  And for the D'Backs, Suarez has enough change of scenery potential, they had a 3B need, and they didn't give up a ton in return

Do you think there’s any chance of the CWS dealing Luis Robert Jr? Saw Getz say they’re listening on all players. Feel like he’d be a guy the Giants should be willing to move whoever necessary to land him. Wonder if they could build a package around Harrison and Matos and two more of their other top 6-7 prospects?
Mark P
8:25
It would take something extreme like that to land Robert, since the White Sox would naturally demand top dollar in return if they did seriously consider trading him

Snell in Seattle for football tonight. Is he going there to pitch come the spring?
Mark P
8:26
The Mariners' have enough pitching that signing Snell to a huge deal would be an odd move.

Who do the Tigers sign.  Go big for Yamamoto and add Maeda too, or more like Flaherty or Severino?
Mark P
8:29
I'm on record as citing Maeda as my hidden gem signing of the offseason, so I think Detroit would be making a great move by adding him.

Obviously getting Yamamoto would be huge, but it would be a surprise to see the Tigers suddenly make such a splash.  Maeda seems like a much more realistic target, but still one that would really help the 2024 team and beyond

Who are your picks for the Hall of Fame this year?  Beltre and ?
Mark P
8:31
Helton and Wagner got so close last year that they're making it over the 75% line this time.  Andruw Jones also has a pretty good shot.

Carlos Beltran probably has to wait one or two more years before more writers stop punishing him for the Astros' scandal.  As for other newcomers on the ballot, Mauer will likely get in eventually, but not first ballot

Can Cleveland compete in 2024?
Mark P
8:33
Sure.  As mentioned earlier, the Guardians have a lot of positive things going their way, but it's just that their margin of error is so thin due to the smaller payroll and lack of offense.  So when the club has some rotation injuries like last year or in 2021, things go south in a hurry

Is PCA trade bait? Should he be?
Mark P

Not that I know of, and probably not.

Do you knoestly think that the Mariners are not going to be in on Ohtani? Or is it just some smoke and mirrors?
Mark P
8:40
I doubt they're real players for his services.  Now, it would be that the M's are just keeping it very close to the vest, but the much likelier option is just that it's not happening.

What do you think the Reds need to do to be the favorites to win the Central?
Mark P
8:41
Update the rotation.  Add a proper top-of-the-rotation arm, and maybe another innings-eater veteran guy to help solidify a staff that is long on potential but short on MLB results

Feels like the Orioles have prospect depth that would make an Abrams/Gore/Hassell/Wood for Soto kind of package not only possible, but fairly easy to part with. And most of that is at the upper levels.
Mark P
8:46
That package got Soto for 2.5 years, not just one.  So Baltimore wouldn't have to give up nearly that much now.

For one, Santander or Hays would surely be going back to the Padres in such a trade, for salary offset and to fill SD's corner outfield hole.

This wouldn't be too crazy a deal for the O's to make, considering Santander and Hays probably aren't in their long-term plans anyway.  But Santander/Hays + B + C = Soto, it obviously depends on how much the Orioles would be willing to surrender for one year of Soto.  None of their very top prospects are likely to be on the table, yet that's exactly what the Padres would want

I’m of the opinion that the Reds will be bottom feeders again this offseason - which I think is a huge mistake. They only have a payroll of $52 million right now - they should be in on every top starting pitcher!
Mark P
8:49
While I agree that the Reds should obtain a top tier starter, keep in mind that they're one of the teams impacted by the Diamond/Bally Sports bankruptcy.  So a big spending splurge obviously isn't happening, for reasons beyond just the usual reasons

8:49
Realistically speaking, how likely is it that the Mariners sign Jeimer Candelario given the team’s past reluctance to sign impact bats?
Mark P
8:50
Probably a better chance they just have Urias at third base, and they go get a bigger bat for second base

Marcelo Mayer & Nick Yorke for Bobby Witt Jr.  Who says yes or no?
Mark P

The Royals quickly say no
Mr. Dark Horse
8:53
Give us any off the radar trade of note that would make sense but nobody is thinking about? It can involve any two (or even three or more) teams.
Mark P
8:54
I think I mentioned this in a chat a few weeks ago, but for some reason, I wouldn't be shocked at Minnesota selling high on Royce Lewis.  Maybe if they have concerns about his long-term injury outlook, and if they can get a good controllable young pitcher in return.

What does Brandon Woodruff’s market look like? Would he fit the Sox alleged plans to “retool” for 2025?
Mark P
8:56
Unsurprisingly, there's been plenty of interest in Woodruff, since he's basically a fit on at least two-thirds of teams.  Like I mentioned earlier, players with this kind of steep interest are more likely than not to sign with a contender.  So, it would probably mean that Woodruff would have to be really sold on Chicago being able to quickly turn the corner
Lowly Rockies fans...
8:58
Do you see Colorado trading Brendan Rodgers to get a mid-rotation type of arm? Could we see the Edward Cabrera-Brendan Rodgers talks come to life again?
Mark P
8:59
Obviously not in a one-for-one, since Rodgers' value has taken a big hit since last winter.  And it's possible Rodgers isn't a consideration at all for the new Miami front office.

If you’re trading for Juan Soto, how much more than his expected 3.6 surplus fWAR do you offer (6.6 predicted fWAR in 2024 minus 3 WAR for his $27m contract)? There is no way his agent will let him sign an extension with whatever team trades for him.
Mark P
9:03
First of all, the agent works for the player, not the other way around.  If Soto wants to sign an extension with a new team, Boras will make it happen to the best of his client's wishes, not physically tackle Soto before he signs a contract.

But, most teams interested in Soto probably view him as a one-year acquisition, and will make offers accordingly.  For a team like the Orioles, as we discussed earlier, maybe they have enough prospects on hand that they think giving up one or two (plus Santander or Hays) is worth it for a one-year splurge to sell tickets and maybe even to put the team over the top for a World Series.

Or, given the Orioles' need, maybe they only make that big splash trade for a player with long-term control.  Or for a pitcher with such control
