Do you think the Padres are open to moving Ha-Seong Kim? coming off the season he just had, what kind of return would they want for him?
Mark P
9:06
It's probably safe to say the Padres are open to everything, though Kim is probably one of the last players they'd look to move.  He is only under contract through 2024 since he naturally won't exercise his end of a 2025 mutual option, yet Kim had such a good year last year, he's inexpensive, and he carries even more importance to the roster given Machado's injury

What is AA's big move this season.  You know he has one in the holster!!!
MadDog

Love the chats. Do the Braves go after either Japanese pitcher? I know they won't spend for Ohtani.
Mark P
9:09
Yamamoto might be seen as such a special opportunity that AA will break some of his usual rules about free agent signings, which is why he's trying to clear some extra payroll space.

If YY lives up to expectations, there's another long-term star the Braves add to their already long list of players locked up through the rest of the 20's
Johnny Utah
9:09
In an attempt to keep him healthy, any chance Starling Marte becomes the DH this season for the Mets?
Mark P
9:10
A fair number of DH at-bats seems like a good idea, sure, but not a full-time role
Mark
9:12
Have seen Red Sox connected to Ohtani, YY, Soto.  Do you think Breslow will make a huge splash like that or spread the money around?  Several holes to fill.
Mark P
9:14
My guess is that the Red Sox will make one very notable move (whether a signing or a trade) this winter, to both improve the roster and generate some buzz.  This is just speculative since we don't know how Breslow will operate just yet, but it's not like Boston isn't willing to spend, and Breslow is coming from a Cubs team that made the big move for Swanson, and other notable signings for Stroman, Suzuki, Taillon, etc.

The Canadian guy gets the US Thanksgiving shift, eh?
Mark P

Three Canadian guys on the staff!  Any more, and we can force Tim to change the name to MLB Trade Rumours

You mentioned earlier you thought the Cards would trade now for a starter now after obtaining some depth with Lynn and Gibson.  Do you feel they will try to get  a top tier starter through free agency and one through a trade?  Clearly Lynn and Gibson are not #1 and 2.
Mark P
9:18
They've been active enough in free agency that I can still see them getting Montgomery, Gray, or maybe even Yamamoto if ownership is willing to take the plunge.

But, maybe the trade route can't be ruled out.  Cease or Bieber might be fits, probably not Burnes due to the NL Central association.

Ha-seong Kim for Bryce Miller who says no?
Mark P
9:20
Miller has too much long-term control, so the Mariners say no. Kim is such a good fit for them that the front office probably has a meeting about it, but the answer is ultimately no
9:21
The real answer is probably Dipoto gets back on the phone with Preller and goes "hey, so a one-for-one doesn't work for us, but let's talk multi-player swaps..."

And lo and behold, the Padres and Mariners work out another seven-player trades it takes me an hour to write up for the site
Matt
9:22
Do Bellinger's '21 and '22 seasons concern teams?
Mark P
9:23
They absolutely should, but of course, the rejoinder is that Bellinger is now healthy after those injury-plagued years

“And lo and behold, the Padres and Mariners work out another seven-player trades it takes me an hour to write up for the site”… I just logged into the chat and you scared me! Context!
Mark P
9:24
Haha, it's a reference to their seven-player deal from 2020.  I happened to be working MLBTR that night, and write a novel covering all the various aspects of such a big swap
Yankees
9:25
Am I the only one who thinks the Yankees are in real trouble for the next 3-4 seasons? They have no real offense outside of Judge and maybe Torres and their pitching outside of Cole is a big question mark too. Do you see them spending big in free agency to patch some holes or do they finally start a quasi-rebuild this year by the trade deadline?
Mark P
9:26
The Yankees will never really rebuild, nor are they ever actually "bad."  There's no doubt some things need to change about the team's operations, but they're still the Yankees at the end of the day.
Hopeless in NY
9:27
I’ve never seen the NY media be so ho-hum about the Mets going into the off-season, especially in the Steve Cohen era. Am I crazy to think that all we’ll sign is a sub par DH and some pitchers coming off injuries to round out the rotation?
Mark P
9:28
I don't think it'll be nearly that quiet.  They won't go wild with the spending again, but even if Stearns mostly sticks to lower-profile "raise the floor" moves, at least one headling-grabbing move is coming

Mark P

Turkey!
Tatis trade idea
9:30
Tatis to Jays for Gausman?
Mark P
9:30
Trading Gausman isn't remotely on the table for the Jays.  Given the rising costs of pitching, his contract is looking better and better by the day
Cleveland
9:31
You think any team would take Straw off Cleveland’s hands? Him being on the roster just kills the opportunity for anyone else.
Mark P
9:34
Straw is owed $19.25MM through 2026, which is a lot for a player who can't hit, his glovework notwithstanding.

It might not be that much for a bigger-payroll team, however, or a club that needs outfield defense badly.  So some kind of creative trade might be possible, but there's a better chance Straw is salary offset along with maybe a young pitcher or two for a notable hitter.
9:35
Since we're beyond the two-hour mark now, that Myles Straw question is the last straw for this chat.

(Did I save that question for last just to make that joke?  Yes, yes, I did.)
9:37
Thanks for all your questions, and hope everyone enjoyed the day, whether you were celebrating or not.  And remember, since we all love old-time TV references here....
