Gurriel's involvement keeps that from being a true prospect-for-prospect, plus both Varsho and Moreno had some MLB experience prior to the deal.

But still.....sighs wistfully

Isn't Kansas City just spending this offseason to give the illusion of being competitive at a time when they're asking the city for big bucks for a new stadium?
Mark P
8:32
I prefer this tactic to not signing anyone, then claiming "see, we can't afford players because our ballpark is so subpar!"

There was so much chatter about Arozerana and Parades possibly heading to the M's. Can you see this happening? Young SP Miller or Woo along with a young outfielder like Marlowe and a Top M's prosper like Harry Ford?
Mark P
8:35
Tampa probably wants more if they're moving both Arozarena and Paredes in the same trade.
Especially now that Glasnow is gone and their biggest payroll concern has been eased

Strange that when you were questioned about the likelihood of Soto signing an extension after being traded, you said that Boras had no power to keep him from extending -- the agent is working for the player, not the other way around.  Now when someone asks about Burnes pulling a trade 'n' extend, you say Boras clients "usually test the market" if they get this close.  So which is it?
Mark P
8:37
If a Red Sox/Brewers deal was being discussed and Burnes told Boras "hey, I'd love to pitch for the Sox for the next six years, let's talk extension," Boras would work to make that happen for his client.

But for the most part, these situations are rare in general, not just for Boras clients.  If you're Burnes and you're so close to free agency, maybe you simply want a chance to fully test the market.

Rangers seem to have a whole lot of holes (dh, 1-2 starting pitchers, multiple relievers) but have a couple guys coming back in the second half. Do you anticipate texas fixing these gaps now though trades or bargain barrel?
Mark P
8:38
The Rangers have enough talent on hand that I can see them perhaps mostly stand pat, and then turn to in-season returns (or the trade deadline) to address any other needs

Chances in your opinion that the jays either sign bellinger or trade for ramirez finally since Cleveland is going to hurt because of tv deal situation.  In percentage
Mark P
8:40
There is a far bigger chance of Bellinger signing.  I highly doubt the Guardians move Ramirez under any circumstance.

Would you have taken the deal, Pasquatch for Luzardo?
Mark P
8:41
Straight up?  Nope, not with Pasquantino coming off such a serious injury

what is your best guess on what Red Sox end up doing this offseason?
Mark P
8:42
They'll add some more pitching, probably in the form of at least one prominent name (via FA or trade).  Essentially swapping out Verdugo for O'Neill seems like a solid move already.

Are you a believer in Scott Harris and the tigers new staff? He seems to say all of the right things in every interview. Has completely changed their minor system in a year.
Mark P
8:45
I think the Tigers have righted the ship after that disaster of a 2022 season, and there should be some real optimism that they can get things fully turned around as soon as next year

Is the Edward O trade with KC an indication that Cutch may not return to Pittsburgh?
Mark P
8:46
Nope, the McCutchen deal seems pretty close to being done, according to recent reports

Cody Mayo and Sammy bassalo for Cease, both guys are blocked, keep cowser and kerjstad, seems like a win win
Mark P
8:49
Basallo is indeed blocked behind Rutschman, but unlike me ordering a sandwich, I suspect the O's will make room for Mayo.

Mayo/Basallo would get Chicago's attention in regards to Cease, though I'm not sure if it's quite the blow-away offer they'd want.

Thus far, 40% of Ohtani's bWAR has come from pitching.  And yet he's only averaged 16 starts per season since signing (accounting for shortened 2020) and his next start won't come until 2025 at the soonest.  The question is over-or-under 160 starts by Ohtani between now and 2034?  Sure, the contract might pay for itself in off-the-field revenue but couldn't it blow up in LAD's faces in terms of on-the-field production?
Mark P
8:51
Ohtani's pitching future is certainly a question, though don't rule out a move to the bullpen if starting no longer becomes feasible
8:52
Obviously this wouldn't be ideal in terms of "how to maximize return on $700MM," but Ohtani doesn't necessarily have to remain as a starter
Padres
8:54
Where is HS Kim playing on opening day?
Mark P
8:55
San Diego.  He's so inexpensive and such a good player that the Padres won't want to part ways.  Plus, Kim is only signed through 2024, so the return for one year of his services might not be worth it
8:56
Maaaaybe I could see the Padres moving Kim if some aggressive team offered to take on a big chunk of Cronenworth's deal as well, yet that also seems like an aggressive move to land a player with one year of control
Brian
8:57
Tigers sign whit merrifield? Play him at 2b/OF, move stud prospect colt Keith to 3b?
Mark P
8:58
Between Keith, Jung, and Malloy, someone like Merrifield might be a decent one-year placeholder for the infield.  But, Detroit might feel that Vierling and McKinstry are, to some extent, already good enough for such placeholder roles.

I also wouldn't be entirely shocked if the Tigers traded from that trio of young infielders to land a more established hitter.

Me thinks the Reds balked on Glasnow when he gave them his price tag for an extension
Mark P
9:01
Glasnow didn't have a no-trade clause or anything, so it's not like he could insist on an extension as part of any deal.
9:02
But that said, clearly he was looking for some extra security, and probably worked something out with the Rays and Dodgers to benefit all parties....Glasnow got his long-term deal, the Rays got better prospects in return, and the Dodgers got a longer-term rotation answer

Do you really think Mookie Betts is the “everyday second baseman” or is he in RF against lefties? I ask bc I’d love to see them trade for Ha-Seong Kim, could fill in anywhere 4-6 with all the positional shuffling the Dodgers do
Mark P
9:03
There is a zero percent chance Kim is traded to the Dodgers, if the Padres move him at all.

But, I do think Betts is going to see some outfield time in 2024.  He's not putting away the outfielder glove forever.

9:04
Are you guys shutting down a few days during the holidays?
Mark P
9:05
We never "shut down" since you never know when baseball news might break.  I've personally covered more than a couple of notable news items on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day.  That said, we are going to have somewhat more limited coverage simply owing to the fact that they'll be slower news days.

I was already concerned about the amount of long term deals teams were handing out, now we have the Ohtani deal. Do you see big deferrals becoming common?
Mark P
9:07
The Ohtani contract is such a unique situation that I don't really see it becoming any kind of standard procedure for big free agents.  And, Ohtani is also not the first player to have a lot of deferred money involved in a contract (though $680MM is deferred money is something else)
IRWT?
9:08
As a Nats fan, I certainly don’t expect the team to contend (I like the prospects, but I’m not banking on a Wood/Crews/House outbreak like the Reds had last season. But to hold the momentum from the 17 game improvement last year I was hoping for a second tier starter and a reclamation project (Montas?) to get Williams out of the rotation and back into his better swing man role. So far, crickets. The rotation was SO bad last year. Can you throw some hope my way? Please?
