Who says no? Castellanos to BOS for Jansen, $2-3m, and a mid prospect.
Mark P
8:07
Castellanos doesn't seem like a fit for Boston's lineup at all.  Yoshida already needs DH time, and the Red Sox have arguably an outfield surplus as it is

Would a team, like the Blue Jays, sign Justin Turner with the idea of having him play a good portion of games at 3B? Or is he just a 1B/DH who can fill in elsewhere in an emergency?
Mark P
8:09
Turner would be a great fit for the Jays, and in fact I had him in Toronto in the FA picks contest.  Turner wouldn't have to play everyday at 3B, but he could split time basically between third and DH, with some first base days when Guerrero gets a DH day

Who do you think is the best pitcher all-time?
Mark P
8:11
My all-time top eight are Maddux, Randy Johnson, Walter Johnson, Feller, Bob Gibson, Seaver, Satchel Paige, Grove.  So one of them!

8:12
Should I get another pitcher after signing Montas? How would you grade that signing?
Mark P
8:13
It was a pretty decent move, even if I do think the Reds in general "might" have been better off getting a more clear-cut ace to bolster their rotation.

But, I also can't blame the team for not going entirely all-in on their club as contenders just yet, since they want to see how their youngsters develop in their sophomore years.  Remember, the Reds are ahead of schedule....taking a step back in 2024 wouldn't be surprising, since Orioles-esque leaps forward are usually the exception, rather than the rule

8:15
Why has nobody hired me yet?
Mark P
8:16
Ng was let go after most teams had already addressed their front office vacancies.  Understandably, she might want a year off to wait for more vacancies to open next offseason

The Rays won't have McClanahan, Glasnow, or Franco for 2024. Could they finish 5th in the AL East?
Mark P
8:18
This may seem like a simplistic answer, but I'm never really worried about the Rays' chances.  They always seem to figure it out and put a competitive team on the field, no matter how their roster seems to look on paper

Giving up on Grissom is tough. Are we looking for another bat in the outfield?

What's your prediction for Jarrod Kelenic this yr year? Enough to stick in LF?
Mark P
8:20
Atlanta will bring in a right-handed hitting OF option to at least be a platoon option for Kelenic, since he hasn't yet proven himself in the majors.

Again, Kelenic is early in his career, and might blossom in a new organization.  The Braves can afford to give him time and at-bats since the rest of their lineup is so stacked.

It's been over a week now, but what are your thoughts on the Mitch Garver signing for the Mariners?
Mark P
8:21
Pretty solid move.  Helps the catching depth somewhat, but more to the point puts a big bat into the DH role that Seattle badly needed

Ha, I knew that listing my top pitchers would immediately bring some mention of the pitchers I didn't cite. Assume they were all tied for ninth!

All offseason so far has been all about Reds getting pitching, all have been acquired by spending money. Think they go after a RH outfielder through trade? They have the prospect capital to do it and don't NEED to get more pitching. I'd love Lane Thomas, what do you think it'd take?
Mark P
8:26
Since the jury is still out on Luis Garcia, landing one of the Reds infielders might be a pretty nice coup for Washington in a Lane Thomas deal, eh?  I don't hate the move for either side, though it probably wouldn't be a straight one-for-one

As long as Ohtani is on the Dodgers, anything less than a World Series Championship will be considered a failure. Your thoughts?
Mark P
8:29
If the Dodgers don't win at least one title during Ohtani's tenure, it'll undoubtedly be a huge disappointment.

Would Max Kepler make a good target for the Mets OF need? Has power, short term deal. What kind of prospects would MIN want for him?
Mark P
8:30
Since the Mets aren't really trying to contend in 2024, Kepler isn't a great fit.  Why give the Twins assets to acquire Kepler when the Mets could just sign an outfielder to a one-year deal?

Do the Rockies wait out and overpay the big name free agents who are left ala kris Bryant style? Or they stayin close to the hip this season
Mark P
8:34
Seems like the Rockies aren't going to be doing much of anything this offseason, certainly not a signing on the level of Bryant's deal.  They'll land a couple of more pitchers, but maybe depth type arms rather than a prominent signing.

Colorado is a difficult team to evaluate since it might be something of an unofficial "rebuild" of sorts even if they won't say it outright, and even if the Rox won't make a bunch of veteran trades like other rebuilding teams would do.

When a team is reported to have "strong interest" in a player, is this usually information leaked by an agent to generate additional interest and/or higher bids for the player?
Mark P
8:37
Obviously there's a wide variance in hot stove lingo, since "strong interest," "interest," "checking in on," "had talks with," etc. could all be interchangeable, or it could all be gamesmanship on some level as you suggest

That said, such leaks might come from a front office eager to either a) show their fans that they're trying to be active, b) perhaps create leverage in dealing with ANOTHER free agent or target, or c) just genuine "strong interest" in a player with no ulterior motive

Who says no? Westburg, Stowers, Pham, and Wagner for Cease or
Mark P
8:39
That's a pretty good offer, even if the White Sox are reportedly/seemingly looking to add pitching.  They'd probably want a higher-tier pitching prospect than Pham.

Everyone thinks I’m crazy for trading for Sale! Mark tell them they’re wrong
Mark P
8:41
It was a fascinating trade, and it speaks to Atlanta's incredibly solid position player core that they can move Grissom for what might be one year of a very injury-prone player.  Frankly, it might hint that the Braves sold high on a young player they weren't entirely sure of as an everyday big league player, or it simply might a typically aggressive Anthopoulos move to land a player he really likes.
