Obviously there's a ton of injury risk with Sale, but he has still looked good when he's been able to pitch.  That might be all the Braves need from Sale to contribute in 2024, if he can be healthy and ready for October

Dodgers better off trading for clase or signing hader?
Mark P
8:43
As much as LA is in go-for-it mode, signing Hader (another qualifying offer-rejecting free agent) would mean an even bigger reduction to their 2024 draft pool.

So in that sense, signing Clase is more likely, even if the Guardians would want a hefty trade package in return.  Maybe that's a price the Dodgers are more willing to pay given their deep farm system, who knows.

Did everyone pivot from Yamamoto to Inanaga, How high is Imanaga’s contract going to get and where will he land?
Mark P
8:44
At this point I think Imanaga might get over $100MM, just because the price tags for starting pitching keep going higher and higher

8:45
What’s the likelihood Pete Alonso is extended before the start of the regular season?
Mark P
8:46
If I had to pick, I'd lean towards no extension.  Those types of major extensions didn't happen for Stearns in Milwaukee apart from Yelich, and Yelich/Alonso are much different circumstances.

Now, whether "no extension" also means a trade might happen is another good question

More disappointing rebuild: White Sox or Padres? Sox have had less success, but Padres spent more and had a very deep farm from which to trade.
Mark P
8:47
It has to be the White Sox.  San Diego still has a lot of talent on the team and might well rebound to get back to the playoffs as soon as 2024.

What kept the Angels from matching the Dodgers offer? Net present value of deal was in line with what was expected.
Mark P
8:52
Maybe the Dodgers' offer was simply beyond what Moreno was willing to spend.  Or, if the deferrals were Ohtani's way of opening the door for his next team to keep spending and amassing talent, perhaps Moreno was wary of spending more after dropping $700MM.  Keep in mind, Moreno has been hesitant about long-term deals for pitchers, so the idea of giving (for instance) 12 years to Yamamato may not have held much appeal

8:52
Why don’t the Astros go ahead and trade Bergman, and get a couple of good prospects instead of keeping him and getting a second or third round draft pick.
Mark P
8:53
Because the Astros are hoping to win the WS this year, not just reload with "a couple of prospects."
Devers
8:53
Any scenario that the Fenway sports group moves devers in next 2-3 years
Mark P
8:54
I find it hard to believe that ownership would've approved that giant extension if it had any designs on rebuilding the roster entirely, which is what a Devers trade would entail
Nate
8:56
Seems like Ryu will be a good value for someone. Thoughts?
Mark P
8:57
Ryu looked decent last year, and might indeed be a good bet for a one-year contract.  If he's holding out for two guaranteed years it could be trickier for him to sign soon, but two years is a tough ask for a pitcher of his age and with his injury history
CincyFanJB
8:57
Who has the tightest lipped FO? I swear the Reds announce a signing and it's never someone that has been a "rumor".
Mark P
8:58
Alex Anthopoulos is known as "the Ninja" for a reason.  There was zero buzz about the Braves being interested in Sale, for the latest example.

Even with Cincy, there was some buzz about their interest in Candelario before he signed, for instance

I give my Cardinals a C- for their  offseason so far. Your grade?
Mark P
9:00
If they'd gotten Gray and one of Lynn/Gibson, I would've given a better grade, weirdly enough.  Signing both Lynn AND Gibson seems a touch redundant to me, though it shouldn't preclude the Cardinals from still getting another pitcher (Montgomery?) to really bolster things.
Witts End
9:01
Do you like the double signing of Wacha and Lugo by the Royals?  Could they take the Central?
Mark P
9:01
I like these moves, but KC needs a lot more lineup help if they're going to be realistic contenders, in my view
Bill
9:01
Does it make sense for the Yankees to trade for Brandon Donovan and make him their left handed 2B and lead off hitter?.
Mark P
9:02
It would mean trading Gleyber and probably one of the younger infielders, but sure, Donovan would be a great fit on the Yankees as he would on a lot of teams.
Robbie Baseball
9:02
What is the probability of Vlad returning to 3B for the Jays if they sign (or trade for) a power hitting 1B? 5%? 10%? Zero?
Mark P
9:02
Zero.  Guerrero was moved to first base for a reason.

Is any progress being made on a Rockies TV deal? Is the lack of TV deal why they’re being so timid or are they letting the kids play?
Mark P
9:05
There hadn't been any recent updates on the TV negotiations, and I neglected to mention this very large factor in my earlier answer about the Rockies' quiet offseason.

While they'll work something out eventually, obviously it makes sense that the team is standing pat until this gets figured out.

Bellinger would sure look good in cf. Still think Philly will make splash with Bellinger or Hader?
Mark P
9:07
Seems doubtful, from what Dombrowski has said publicly.  Never rule out a big splashy Dombrowski move, I guess, yet a trade might be a more interesting way for the Phillies to upgrade their team
Stroman Home?
9:08
Not much news on Stroman...his former teams, the Blue Jays and Cubs, appear to be not interested in a reunion. Does Anaheim or the Giants make sense?  Any dark horses?  Does 3 years 51 years seam about right?
Mark P
9:09
Angels or Giants do make sense, and for pitching-needy teams, the Red Sox, Twins, Yankees, Orioles, and maybe even the Pirates could be in play if his price drops enough.

Nick Deeds wrote about Stroman's market the other day

Sox
9:10
Why did you say they’re dumping salary in the article. They’re clearly not dumping salary after eating A ton of Sale contract
Mark P
9:11
It wasn't a "salary dump," but rather Boston essentially paying $17MM for Grissom's services.
Farhan
9:12
Please tell Giants fans that I am actually working on free agents and trades and such.
Mark P
9:12
SF fans, Farhan Zaidi is working on free agents and trades and such
Bullet Tooth Tony
9:13
Do you think Roki Sasaki will convince his team to post him this season? If so how would you rank his landing spots in MLB?
Mark P
9:14
We're already passed the deadline for NPB players to move to the majors, so I don't think "convincing" will do it at this point.  Admittedly there's still a lot that isn't know about Sasaki's contract, but if he did have an out clause, one would think he would've triggered it long before now
Birdland
9:15
Do the Orioles sign any free agents to more than a one year contract or get extensions done for their young core done this off season?
