Obligatory Jays fan answer....Joe Carter's home run

Will the Red Sox trade Masataka Yoshida?
Mark P
8:15
Seems unlikely, since the Sox probably have to eat some money to accommodate a trade.  Teams thought the Red Sox overpaid for him last year anyway, plus Yoshida had a solid but not a standout rookie year.  If anything, his defensive struggles might've lowered his value in the eyes of some teams.

Should the Rays trade Harold Ramirez?
Mark P
8:18
I'd keep him if I'm the Rays, since the team's lineup is now looking like it won't have Wander Franco.  The Glasnow/Margot trade brings Tampa's projected payroll to around $94MM, which is still high by Rays standards, but probably not so high that a Ramirez trade seems "necessary"

On Dec. 5 MLBTR linked a SF Chronicle article where Dave Forst said he expected his 2024 Opening Day payroll to exceed last year's final payroll (~$59.5 MM per Cots Contracts). A week later the A's agreed to pay Alameda County $45 MM by mid-May because of their move to Vegas. Do you think Forst's payroll projection is no longer valid or can you see the A's spending roughly $26 MM in the coming weeks?
Mark P
8:20
My understanding is that the $45MM payment was in the works for a while, and thus was probably separate from any payroll projections Forst was making.

But frankly, it's probably not a bad move to just assume that the A's will always spend less than expected

Why aren't many relievers mentioned in trade talks?
Mark P
8:21
Teams view a lot of relievers as fungible, and with somewhat limited value.  Or, the relievers who are perceived to have value are so important to a team that said team isn't too keen on trading them.

What are the chances of mlb placing a team in tennessee or the carolinas?
Mark P
8:26
I hope you're not suggesting the Reds move.  Cincy's got a great ballpark, and so much history!

Nashville is widely viewed as a prime candidate whenever MLB decides to expand.  If Nashville gets a team, a second team probably might not also go in Charlotte/Raleigh/wherever for geographic reasons, so that might open the door for Portland, San Antonio, Montreal, Salt Lake City, etc.

Bieber for the Martian Dominguez ?

Zero chance Dominguez is moved for one year of Bieber

Is Altuve going to get an extension before the end of the year?
Mark P
8:28
Probably.  He's the face of the franchise, and the Astros are reportedly prioritizing getting him locked up on a new deal

Can your Packers do anything in the playoffs?
Mark P
8:29
Just getting into the playoffs is such a huge win Green Bay, considering that they looked like just about the worst team in the NFL a couple of months ago.  Beating the Cowboys in Dallas is a very tall order, but crazier things have happened.

Does paul skenes have a shot at making opening day !
Mark P
8:31
With so little minor league experience, it would seem like a rather unnecessarily aggressive promotion for the Pirates, even is Skenes is seen as special.
8:32
A 2024 debut certainly seems possible, but not on Opening Day

Who is the best 1Bmen most available in trade market?
Mark P
8:34
Alonso is the best available trade candidate, depending on how available he actually is.  Adding Alonso for one year doesn't really seem to fit what the Padres are doing at the moment.

Do you think players largely avoid signing with teams they know will be bad? Or do they view it as a chance to re-establish value knowing they’ll likely be dealt at the deadline?
Mark P
8:36
Obviously every player would prefer to play for a winning team, but there are only so many of those teams, and so many MLB jobs available.  (And obviously, what looks like a winning or a losing team in the offseason might not be the case once play begins.)

A lot of players who sign one-year contracts with non-contenders do so with the full knowledge that they'll likely be dealt at midseason.  As you note, that's not really a bad thing, since a trade probably only happens if the player is performing well, and then that player gets to join a team in the race.

Could we see Mariners in on Chapman to play 3rd? Team is right there, you’d wish they’d spend some money.
Mark P
8:39
Seems too expensive based on the Mariners' current spending

It is possible that Seattle's quick pivot from Ray makes it even more likely that they're focusing on trades, given how he was their only true big-ticket free agent signing of the Dipoto era.  Obviously Ray's injury factored into things, yet it remains to be seen how gunshy the M's might be about any such major signings in the future

Do you think dodgers need to trade chris Taylor or Miguel rojas
Mark P
8:40
Probably not "need to," since both are useful part-time pieces.  Rojas is a strong defender and the Dodgers need SS depth until they know if Lux can handle the role, and Taylor can fill in around the diamond
8:41
Personally, I'd be open to moving Taylor to get his contract off the books, but such a deal doesn't seem too likely

What spot in the everyday lineup would you work the hardest to improve this winter for the Phils?

Is Dombrowski playing his cards close to the vest, or is he really not going to sign another RH OF in case Rojas doesn’t hit?
Mark P
8:43
Part of me thinks the Phillies might be overselling the "we're done with any big moves" idea a bit much, perhaps out of gamesmanship.

Moving Castellanos or Bohm strike me as opportunities for upgrades, yet trading Castellanos in particular would be really tricky

Is there room in the D-Backs infield for Jordan Lawlar in 2024?

Absolutely, in a timeshare with Perdomo at SS

Does Casey Schmidt + Travis Beck get Corbin Burnes? How much more would the Brewers want to get Adames thrown in? Keaton Winn?
Mark P
8:45
If the Brewers moved both of their top trade assets in the same deal, they'd want someone from the Harrison/Luciano/Whisenhunt tier

Is Justin Turner still good enough as a 3rd baseman that he could play on a regular basis ??
Mark P
8:47
His defensive numbers have been mixed at best over the last few years, and given his age, playing regularly at third base (rather than at 1B or DH) might also wear him down and impact his bat

Turner as a part-time third baseman is feasible, but not a true everyday guy
