What's on the play list tonight?  Or are the Golden Globes on in the background?
Mark P
8:49
As an Oscars nerd, I turn my nose up snobbily at the Golden Globes

Song at the moment is Lana Del Rey's cover of "Country Roads"
Dave
8:51
Ryan Mountcastle for Pete Alonso make any sense?
Mark P
8:52
Obviously not just Mountcastle, but Mountcastle plus one or two prominent Orioles prospects would do it.

But, making a splurge for one year of Alonso doesn't seem like something Baltimore would do (or feel the need to do)
Blake Snell
8:53
Mystery team signing now that the Mariners cleared up a rotation spot by trading Ray and freed up future payroll?
Mark P
8:54
It would be intriguing to see Snell land with his hometown team, and though he's a Boras client, I do wonder if he'd even be willing to take some minor hometown discount.

The M's could then trade one of their other young starters for more offensive help.

8:55
What grade would you give the Braves for their off season moves so far?  Are they better or worse than last year?
Mark P
8:58
I'd go B-/C+

There's upside in Sale and Kelenic, though the amount of risk might not be worth the payroll additions.  Sure, the Braves have lots of money to spend, but if it had been me, I wouldn't have invested my extra payroll space in taking on a lot of bad contracts just to add Kelenic, Fletcher, and Ray Kerr.  Or then to invest more money in Chris Sale
8:59
But then again, if it had been me, the Braves wouldn't have been in nearly as good a starting position anyway since (newsflash) Alex Anthopoulos knows more than I do about putting a baseball team together.  While I'm not sure how much better the Braves necessarily are, they're certainly not worse, and their 2023 core was already awfully good

Is there any chance mike trout gets traded to St Louis?
Mark P
9:01
I'm glad you put the strikethrough so I didn't have to
Mark P
9:02
If the Cubs sign Hoskins does that eliminate a Bellinger return? Or if both signed would they trade PCA
Mark P
9:03
I don't see PCA being dealt, but in the event that Chicago signed both Bellinger and Hoskins, the DH spot is still there to rotate the outfielders through.  Morel could then be dealt for pitching help

What would the Jays have to give up to get both Naylor brothers in a trade with Cleveland?
Mark P
9:05
That's not a deal I see Cleveland making since they're in such big need for hitters themselves.

Can the Rangers really afford to offer Montgomery an Aaron Nola-sized contract?
Mark P
9:07
Texas is another team still waiting for resolution on their TV broadcasting situation.  It could be that Montgomery is doing the Rangers a solid by waiting until they figure things out one way or the other, perhaps if Texas is ultimately Montgomery's top choice.

Jays fan or not I can think of 20 historic moments than would dwarf Carter's home run.
Mark P
9:08
Ok fine, Bartolo Colon's home run
Tim
9:09
Where does Blake Snell land?
Mark P
9:09
I'm leaning towards the Yankees, slightly.
Yankees or Giants, that's my pick.

9:10
If the Marlins are looking to cut costs, would they eat money to trade Bell?
Mark P
9:12
Bell is earning $16.5MM in 2024, but the Marlins need offense and Bell really turned it up after being dealt to Miami.  Eating money to move him doesn't make a lot of sense for the team, in my view
Adam
9:12
Dodgers should really find a home for Michael Busch. Nationals could use a 2B upgrade. Is there a possible trade here without the Nats having to include any prospects?
Mark P
9:14
Nats fans probably would cringe at this, but since the Dodgers want a right-handed hitting outfielder...Lane Thomas?  It wouldn't be Busch alone for Thomas, but Busch as part of a package.

DC also probably isn't ready to give up on Luis Garcia yet, however, so trading for Busch (or any other second baseman) might not be high on Washington's priority list
Brian
9:15
Mark, why are so many teams dealing with tv broadcasting situations? And how come some teams like Texas are still spending while the mariners are slashing payroll?
Mark P
9:16
Diamond Sports had broadcasting deals with about half the teams in the league, plus a couple of other teams (Seattle, Colorado) also saw their own regional sports networks either cease operations or get taken over by the teams themselves.
9:17
And Texas hasn't done much spending, in fact

Following up on your Phillies response: if they moved Bohm, they’d have no 3B - Sosa defensive ratings at third last year were terrible.
Mark P
9:19
The Phillies would be obtaining a new third baseman in the world where they dealt Bohm, naturally.

I am very thankful for the 4 championships the currrent Red Sox ownership.  However, the seem to be more interested the past few years in buying more teams.  Could they be acting like a small market team preparing to sell?  I would love to get owners that once again prioritize our Sox.   There is nothing full throttle about this…

Redsox seem like a team in Dire financial straits or are they for sale ?
Mark P
9:22
The Red Sox are hardly in "dire financial straits," but they do seem to be to some extent on FSG's backburner in the last couple of years.

Apparently the latest reports from the soccer world have Mbappe heading to Real Madrid, not Liverpool.  So if FSG doesn't have to set aside a billion dollars (!) or whatever it'll take for an Mbappe transfer, perhaps that might mean more money for the Red Sox?

If Adrian Beltre isn't unanimous, who will be the next unanimous vote? Pujols? Miggy?
Mark P
9:25
Keep in mind that just because Rivera finally broke the unanimous vote curse, it doesn't necessarily mean we're going to suddenly get a flood of perfect 100 percent inductees.

For Pujols and Miggy, they might lose a couple of votes based on their lengthy decline years, or whatever reason a writer might come up with to instead use a ballot spot on someone else.
You don’t know ball
9:25
This is how much these national writers and bloggers know:  the Phillies shelling out 5-6 years for Matt Chapman — a player in decline and the only free agent 3B legitimately better than Bohm — when Aidan Miller, a third baseman, is their best position prospect, makes no sense.
Mark P
9:26
Miller was just drafted this year, so Chapman could be more than halfway through a hypothetical contract before Miller even makes it to the big leagues.  There's also no guarantee Miller sticks at 3B

San Jose is going to get a MLB team with the Bay Area (biggest $ market in USA) only having 1 team now. Bay Area could easily house 3-5 teams if we are talking money/people ratios....
Mark P
9:29
If I understand baseball's byzantine territorial rights rules, the Giants have rights over the entire Bay Area except for Oakland.  This is why the A's own attempts to move to San Jose years ago didn't go anywhere.

I'm not sure what mechanisms the league could use to install a team in San Jose if the Giants objected, but in general, I agree that the Bay Area is more than large enough for two teams
