the pirates keep saying they believe they’ll be playoff contenders . but for me i want to see some higher type player signings. spend some money and get a hitter that can hit at least 280 and a starter that can win 15 to 18 games.
Mark P
6:48
I agree that the Pirates don't seem like contenders in their current form.  To echo my quote from earlier in this chat, "a lot would have to go right" in terms of younger players stepping up, and some of their more established players taking bigger steps forward.
Not to say that they couldn't still make a notable addition or two, given that there have been hints that the Pirates are a bit more willing to spend than in recent years

“How have I done so far in my first offseason as a GM?”
Mark P
6:50
Perhaps decent?  I think it's wise that Getz has a realistic view of his roster, and is definitely operating in semi-rebuild mode by taking offers for his stars and only adding veterans on short-term deals.

what about Arreaz to the Jays?  Could be a good fit at 2B.... Would Manoah plus a prospect work?
Mark P
6:52
Considering how Manoah struggled last year, I have doubts that the Marlins would view him as the key piece of an Arraez trade.  Keep in mind that Miami wants to be competitive next year, and Arraez has already become a beloved figure amongst the team's fans.  It doesn't help fan perception if a new GM/PBO takes over and the first move is to trade away the popular batting champ

Are the Brewers making a mistake holding onto Burnes. We know he will not be resigned. Is Arnold to greedy. Also, what are the Brewers going to do for bats? They gave Canha away for nothing and did not resign Santana.
Mark P
6:56
The Brewers are hoping their younger hitters can develop and start generating some offense.  If Chourio, for instance, lives up to expectations, he might be the Rookie of the Year favorite.

In terms of keeping Burnes, I can see both sides of the debate.  I agree that an extension to stay seems quite unlikely, and yet the Brewers also want to win in 2024.  After losing Woodruff entirely, and presumably since the offers for Burnes haven't been great, perhaps the Brewers are open to just keeping Burnes (and Adames) in one final "go for it" season

Why is Cronenworth called "untradeable"?  His contract is weirdly long, but it isn't for that much money.
Mark P
6:59
Today is actually Cronenworth's birthday, so what better gift than a discussion of his lack of trade value?!

It's always instructional to consider what Cronenworth would get if he was a free agent right now.  Coming off that down year, and entering his age-30 season, would Cronenworth land even a multi-year contract?  Or maybe one guaranteed year with an option?  What's for certain is that he wouldn't come remotely close to $78MM over seven years, and since that evaluation is so far beyond how other teams would price him, it obviously makes it tough for the Padres to find a workable trade

With so many teams crying poor this winter and some good players still on the market...you'd think somebody internally would blink and go "you know, it's worth maybe spending a little more than we want to take advantage of the stalemate and the revenue from a post-season run will be worth it." Right?
Mark P
7:01
It could be argued that the Reds and Royals have done this to some extent, even if the postseason is more of a realistic goal for Cincy than for KC

Muncy for Manoah.  Who says no?
Mark P
7:03
Dodgers.  They'd likely have interest in Manoah, but not at the cost of a pretty reliable everyday starter

Bills or Chiefs
Mark P
7:04
I wouldn't be shocked if Buffalo won given how inconsistent the Chiefs have been this year.  But at the end of the day, I can't do against Mahomes in a big game

Does Montgomery really wait around for the Rangers?
Mark P
7:05
If the other offers aren't to his liking, perhaps.  Or if the Rangers have told him, "hey, you're still our guy, we just need to get this TV deal figured out before we can hammer out contract details" and Montgomery is willing to hear them out

What is the future this offseason for the Astros?
Mark P
7:07
The Hader signing was fascinating, in part because it ran counter to how the Astros traditionally operate, and because it opens the door to potential other surprise moves.

I could see Houston bringing another outfielder into the mix, particularly a left-handed hitting type.  Beyond that, they don't have too many other glaring needs since I think they're ok with their rotation depth (famous last words...)
Giants Fan
7:08
what’s next for the team? seems like the rotation may be set until the all star break, with winn and stripling.
Mark P
7:09
I still think SF lands another notable everyday free agent, and perhaps another starter as well.

The Giants' "rotation" could be something of a piecemeal effort like last year, so it's hard to really call it a finished product even during the year

I asked for pitching I got 38 year old Matt Carpenter who slugged his weight last year. As that SNL actor used to say “ what’s up with that “ ?
Mark P
7:12
Kenan Thompson is still in the cast, so it's not even a "used to say" situation!  They could run one of those sketches next week, if they can get Jason Sudeikis and Fred Armisen to cameo

Uh, anyway, onto baseball.  Carpenter is a no-risk signing for St. Louis, so there's nothing harmed by bringing him to camp and seeing if he has anything in the tank.

With so many catching prospects in Dodgers farm system, do you think Dodgers will hesitate to extend Will Smith?
Mark P
7:15
Rushing seems to have surpassed Cartaya in the prospect rankings, but the Dodgers aren't in any rush (see what I did there!) to decide yet since Smith is still under arb control through 2025.  Once they see how Rushing/Cartaya perform in 2024, L.A. can start deciding whether or not Smith is really their guy for the long haul
And if they do decide to stick with Smith, then Cartaya and Rushing become very interesting trade chips
Atkins
7:16
Surely my statement about adding one more bat can't be it?   The O needs more.  IKF does not equal what Whit did for them, never mind Chappy, , and as much as "fans" complained about Belt, he led the team in OPS.   Sure Vlad, Bo and Varsho may have better years but the Jays also benefitted from incredible pitching health.   Trades have to be the answer at this point to avoid falling back in the race?
Danielectomy
7:16
Don't the Jays need to add TWO decent bats to their lineup to even be as competitive as they were last year?
Mark P
7:17
Pretty much everyone recognized that Atkins was underplaying the Jays' offensive needs, since it doesn't help them from a PR or a negotiation standpoint if Atkins had said they need multiple bats.

Gary Sheffields final time on the ballot.   Do you think he gets in?  Slightly under 75 percent right now. A little over half the ballots to count.
Mark P
7:19
History has shown us that if a player isn't over the 75% threshold with room to spare this close to the official announcement, they aren't getting inducted.

Sheffield will have to take his chances on the veterans committee ballots in the future

Pittsburgh has enough 2B options already that I'm not sure Wong is really an upgrade at all

Do Dodgers sign Kershaw and maybe Woodruff
Mark P
7:21
I do ultimately think Kershaw returns to LA
Woodruff would be a really interesting fit for the Dodgers, and I'm sure he'd have interest in joining them given their track record with pitchers (and contending every year, obvs)
