They spent a ton of money on Nola, so it's not like the Phillies closed the vault.  If the Phillies went after Hicks and Stephenson, clearly there's some more to spend, whether that translates to another bullpen addition or some other kind of move.

MLBTR's Steve Adams looked at Philly's potential next needs in a post earlier this week

Been reported that the O’s have 2 million in international bonus money still available. I know it’s normal practice for some teams to leave bonus money to the side but 2 million seems like a lot. Do you think as bonus pools expand over the years that it’s likely lower market teams start to fall behind the curve and not spend to the limits?
Mark P
7:25
It could be that Baltimore is waiting on someone to become available on the market?  But in their case specifically, keep in mind that the Orioles basically didn't even have an international scouting apparatus before Elias took over.  Since a lot of these deals with int'l prospects are worked out years in advance, it could be that the Orioles are only just now catching up to the rest of baseball, and are still behind when it comes to longer-term agreements

Why aren’t the D-backs in on any of the major players, such as Montgomery, Bellinger, or Chapman? They have the money, and can use another impact bat and extra help in the rotation and bullpen in case of injuries. Bellinger could be a great fit because he can rotate with Walker and Gurriel to give them time to rest at DH.
Mark P
7:27
Montgomery/Bellinger and even Chapman would represent a new level of spending for Arizona, and an even bigger splurge after signing E-Rod doesn't seem too likely.  Plus, Suarez was just acquired for third base, for Chapman in particular doesn't seem like a fit
Anthony Rendon

The season is just too long but your chats are just the right amount of time. I will play 120 this year (but that is counting ST games.
Mark P
7:28
For as much heat as Rendon is getting for this comment, I guarantee you a lot of players think the season is too long

It seems like Dodgers neglected to spend all of their international bonus pool this year. Roki Sasaki rumors gaining steam for winter of 2024?
Mark P
7:29
There's a lot of speculation that Sasaki might enact an out clause (if he has one) as early as next offseason.  And in that case, yeah, everyone in the world pretty much predicted the Dodgers as the landing spot.

why are we not hearing mire trade talk around pitchers such as Blackburn
Mark P
7:31
I'm sure the A's have gotten plenty of calls on Blackburn, but they're under no obligation to move him
Trader Dave
7:32
why are we not hearing more trade talk around pitchers such as Blackburn ? Seems he would be an upgrade for O’s or Phillies ? Orioles especially have prospects blocked….
Mark P
7:33
Oops, looks like I posted the first version of your question and not the full thing.  As we noted earlier about Baltimore's rotation, Blackburn is likely a step up over the fifth starter candidates but not at the front end.  Maybe the same in Philly, though I like Cristopher Sanchez perhaps more than I like Blackburn

Isn't Carp's deal of the Major League kind —as in, he signed onto the 26-man until such a time as he might be released (or retire)...?
Mark P
7:34
This is correct, it is a Major League contract.  But it still doesn't cost the Cardinals anything except the minimum, since Carpenter's 2024 salary is covered by the Braves
Tigers
7:34
Could you see them being above 500 this year?
Mark P
7:34
Yes
You are wrong
7:35
What do you mean by  the Yankees have a "Crowded infield?"
Mark P
7:36
DJ at 3B, Volpe at SS, Torres at 2B, Rizzo at 1B, Peraza as a super-util, and Stanton taking the bulk of DH at-bats.  Since Arraez is an everyday guy, the Yankees would have to move one of Volpe/Peraza in the trade, or put everyone into something of a timeshare

Am I an evil genius?  A fantastic GM?  A former member of the ‘Horsemen’ ?

I don't recall Anthopoulos teaming up with Arn Anderson and Tully Blanchard back in the day, but he is a great GM

Padres Drew Thorp and Jairo Iriarte for Dillion Cease a Fair Trade and who says no?
Mark P

White Sox say no, their asking price for Cease is way higher

With the Lions making a run at the Super Bowl, what more can the Tigers do this offseason to make themselves contenders in the middling AL Central?
Mark P
7:40
Can Dan Campbell give a motivational speech before every game?

I'm on record as saying that the Tigers might consider trading one of their young 2B/3B candidates for an experienced veteran at either position, to really shore up the lineup with a proven bat.

Detroit's chief plan is to see what they have with their youngsters so ultimately their chances of contending will hinge on how many (if any) break out or at least keep improving.  But in terms of taking a step closer to contending, turning one of the question marks into more of a surer thing would help

Does Emerson Hancock get you Polanco from the Twins? Reasonable chance it comes together?
Mark P
7:43
I suspect the Twins would be very open to getting Hancock for two years of Polanco.  That's a deal Seattle might be willing to make given their young pitching depth, yet it depends on a couple of factors.

  1. Where the Mariners slot Hancock on their internal depth chart
  2. Whether or not they could move Hancock (or another pitcher) for an even more tempting trade target
Joey Bart
7:44
To where might I get traded? And what sort of trade value do I have, especially since I'm optionless?
Mark P
7:46
Somewhat limited.  I think Anthony suggested in another MLBTR chat this week that the Rays might be a good fit, given their longtime need for catching.  Bart for a second-tier or third-tier pitching prospect might be the only feasible move for San Francisco at this point.

Though potentially, Bart could be added as part of a larger trade package for a more significant big leaguer.  Bart plus a young pitcher, for instance

Wouldn't it be wise for the Orioles to lock up some young talent long term?  Why are so many bullish on their rotation?  Bradish, Means, G Rod, Kremer seem fairly solid to me.  Hopefully Baltimore builds on 2023?
Mark P
7:49
John Angelos' comments on the team's finances is a big obstacle to a lot of extensions, unless things have changed now that the ballpark lease deal is finalized.

Obviously it makes perfect sense for the O's to at least broach an extension with Rutschman and Henderson, since they're the two most clear-cut building blocks of the group.

Would Randal Grichuk make sense as the Reds need a RH outfielder?
Mark P
7:50
I'd think they could do better than Grichuk himself, but a RH-hitting OF complement would be a good fit

Is Atkins on the hot seat at this point?
Mark P
7:53
There is a lot of fan discontent in Toronto right now, and if the Jays get off to a slow start, John Schneider's job at least will be in jeopardy.  A front office change could also come at the end of the year if the Jays missed the playoffs or something

Now that Crane seems willing to spend, do you think there is a higher chance he will extend Altuve and at least one other player ? What’s the point of five years of Hader if you aren’t going to try to contend ?
Mark P
7:55
It feels like a given that Altuve is extended, but Bregman and Tucker are question marks.  Crane's "six-year rule" is kind of a ceiling on what the team can do in terms of contracts, yet obviously Crane can break that rule at any point if he wishes.

Why no love for Wandy Peralta this winter?  Given length of track record, there should be a case for him over R Stephenson, who just got four years based on four good months.
