The Beard

Instead of “chat” can we call it a “colloquy”? I feel like this would expand our collective vocabulary, and also make us all feel fancy.

Has Mike Hazen done enough to enable me to lead the DBacks back to the playoffs?
Mark P
7:50
Arizona's lineup and rotation both look better, so I'd say the D'Backs have a great shot at a return to October
7:51
In fact, I was about to absolutely guarantee that the D'Backs play in October this year, except a quick check of the schedule reveals that the regular season ends in September this year.

7:52
Is the Colt Keith extension the first of more to come for Detroit?
Mark P
7:53
There are enough injury problems amidst the younger starters that the Tigers might be hesitant about extending any of them, or those starters (and their agents) might also be wary of signing a deal now that immediately becomes a bargain if the pitchers get healthy and perform well.
7:54
Greene, Torkelson, maybe Jung could be extension candidates among the position player group, but the Tigers might not want to get too aggressive just yet in committing money to players who still haven't done a ton at the MLB level
Beach Bum
7:55
Should the Tigers grab a one year stopgap at 3B or let the Vierling/McKinistry/Ibanez et al combo play again this year and wait for Jung?  I'm not sold on that group.
Mark P
7:55
Detroit's got enough guys to play mix and match at the position.  An in-season addition is also possible, either if none of that group really steps up, or if perhaps Keith struggles and one of the in-house guys is needed for 2B

As the parent of a medical resident, I can firmly say "NO" she can't transfer to another hospital. She's committed for the 4-5 years in Boston. She could always quit, but medical residents don't quit, especially those who are dermatologists which is one of the most prestigious tracts.

Good information, thanks!  I learn all kinds of interesting facts from these chats.

Given the contracts, we should expect Jackson Chourio and Colt Keith to be on their teams' Opening Day rosters, right?  Which one do you think will have the better season?
Mark P
8:01
Who will have the better rookie season?

Jackson Chourio (79.3% | 432 votes)

Colt Keith (20.7% | 113 votes)

Everyone seems to like the idea of Morel playing third, even though his defense is terrible. He has shown that hevisca good second baseman. Would it be so bad to play Morel at second and Hoerner at third?
Mark P
8:03
Hoerner isn't known to have a great throwing arm, so a move to third might weaken the Cubs defensively at two positions.  There's a certain "if it ain't broke..." logic to just keeping Nico at second base

Ha-Seoung Kim to the Giants. What comes back?
Mark P
8:06
Giants aren't moving Harrison or Whisenhunt for one year of Kim.  The Padres will likely prioritize getting pitching in return, but I don't think anyone from the Birdsong/Winn tier of SF minor leaguers will get it done for San Diego.

This particular scenario is also a little trickier due to the division rival aspect, and whether or not the Padres are even open to moving Kim within the NL West

In regards to Montgomery's wife, she is signed on to go to Vanderbilt Medical in Nashville after residency.  She is from Ky.
Mark P
8:07
See, I'd know all this if I started reading Med School Trade Rumors.  Vanderbilt won the bidding after some intense negotiations with her agent, Scott Boras.

At this point, I think the Reds biggest hole is a RH hitting outfielder who can be also play at least some CF..  When do you think tie Reds trade for Lane Thomas be done?😂
Mark P
8:10
If the Nationals are no longer sold on Luis Garcia and want another young second baseman, the Reds could make an interesting offer for Thomas

Thoughts on the Hader signing?  Think stros go after bellinger?
Mark P
8:12
Even if the Astros are clearly in all-in mode, signing Bellinger on top of Hader is too unrealistic for Houston's way of doing business.  I'd have to think they'd make some trade first to cut payroll if signing Bellinger was even on their radar

Please don’t tell me the Dodgers are closing the door on Kershaw
Mark P
8:14
Not at all. Kershaw won't be ready until midseason at the earliest, so he could return to give the Dodgers the equivalent of a big deadline pickup
Bruce
8:15
You thinks Betts could really handle second base?
Mark P
8:15
Defensively?  Absolutely, he looked really good there last year
Hall of Fame
8:16
Do you see the hall of fame format ever being overhauled? I’ve always thought that the writers should be able to pick as many/few players as necessary. If the class has 15 eligible players to me it makes sense that they should all be picked.
Mark P
8:18
I think the ten-player limit was only a real problem during those unusual logjam years when the guys attached to PED usage (Bonds, Clemens, McGwire, etc.) were all eligible.  I do agree that the 10-player cap either isn't necessary or that it could be raised to 15, but it might not be an issue for many years yet

Pfaaldt Rodriguez Kelly makes a good 3. Why shouldn’t Gallen be used to restock arms. Dbacks lack top end pitching prospects.
Mark P
8:19
Uh, because Arizona is trying to win, and because Gallen is still under control for two years at a relative bargain price?
Dick Allen HOF

Dick Allen get into the HOF?
Mark P

He should be.  I wish he'd been elected on the last veterans committee ballot

Cards started aggressive but I would say their winter overall has been underwhelming. Especially with the Carpenter signing. How low does Phil Maton’s  demand have to go before STL will bite.
Mark P
8:23
I do wonder if STL might be a darkhorse for Montgomery, if he actually is willing to give a former team a slight (very slight) discount due to familiarity.  Or, if the Cardinals are waiting for just a bit more clarity on their TV situation before they know how much they have to offer Montgomery.

Also, please submit any known details about dermatology residencies available in St. Louis hospitals!

Do the Yankees regret getting Alex Verdugo now that they have Soto?  And will Cubs feel Busch wasn't the best move if they sign Cody Belliger?  Thanks for the chat.
Mark P
8:24
I don't think any of these moves are regrets.  Can't hurt having depth and more talent available, because you never know when injuries might emerge

Any chance I can sign Justin Turner for 1 year at 11 million to platoon at 1B and pick up other at bats at DH and 3B for the Bucs?
Mark P
8:26
The Tellez/McCutchen signings likely preclude a Turner deal from happening.  Turner would also probably like to play for a team that looks like more of a surefire contender.

That said, like with many teams, Turner would be a great fit for the Pirates.  I think he'll bring a lot more to the table than Tellez will, since my concern is that pitchers have basically figured Tellez out
