The Reds have tons of upside, but the Cubs to me have more guys who are proven at the MLB level.  I wouldn't be shocked at all if Cincy takes a big step up this year if a few of their young stars really start emerging, and if their pitching staff delivers on their potential

Happy Willie Mays day! The greatest ever! Just wanted to share that!

2/4/24, hooray!  One of the true greats of sports history, not just baseball history.

What are your thoughts on the two White Sox trades this week?
Mark P
8:29
I like Santos a lot, but that was a pretty nice haul for a young and still somewhat unproven young reliever.  Especially for a White Sox team that might be in the weeds for a while yet, so a closer is something of a luxury
8:31
Given how fungible relievers can be, it might look like a steal for Chicago if Santos struggles.

Similarly, I like that Fletcher move too.  Fletcher looks like he might be at least a solid part-time outfield piece, with potential still to become a true regular

Hey Mark, could the mariners still make a surprise move and sign someone like Bellinger? Am I wrong to think they were better with Kelenic and Suarez than Hainger (just cause he will most likely get hurt) and Urias?
Mark P
8:31
A big trade is likelier than a big signing, just based on Jerry Dipoto's history and the fact that payroll is pretty tight for the Mariners.

How much salary are the Phillies able to spend while staying under the threshold?
Mark P
8:33
According to Roster Resource, the Phils have a tax number just shy of $253MM, so well over the $237MM threshold.  I don't think a Phillies team determined to win now is too worried about getting under the tax line, and if anything, they're a safe bet to be over the next threshold of $257MM by Opening Day

Triples makes it safe. Triples is best. Sam Crawford had 309 career triples. Do you think Corbin Carroll could give him a run for his money? Already 12 career triples at 23.
Mark P
8:35
I don't like his chances, since almost everyone on the all-time triples list played at least 70 years ago

I am surprised how little chatter has come up about Amed R.  It would shock me if he heads to Asia, given the lack of interest.
Mark P
8:37
I think he'll land somewhere in North America before the season starts, but given his down numbers, it isn't a shock that Rosario might be viewed as a Plan B or Plan C for a lot of teams.

Now that Polanco has finally been dealt, however, he might've been the 'Plan A' for a number of teams, which is good news for Rosario's market

I keep hearing rumblings that the Cardinals are inching closer to a possible Montgomery reunion. Is it possible that 2/5 of the rotation at around $25 for one year could allow them to go big this year h
Mark P
8:39
Now that Texas seems to have the TV deal settled or close to settled, I wouldn't be shocked if we see resolution on Montgomery within the next week.  As long as he remains on the market, the Cardinals do make sense a dark horse, and he'd be an excellent long-term asset for the rotation

Pirates have shown interest in Gary Sanchez according to a couple of reports. Does it make sense for the Pirates to acquire him and what would that mean for Davis?
Mark P
8:41
The Pirates have said they're committed to seeing what Davis can do at catcher, so maybe checking in on Sanchez was just due diligence?

Are the Blue Jays a playoff team?
Mark P
8:42
Will the Blue Jays make the playoffs in 2024?

Yes (38.6% | 358 votes)

No (61.4% | 570 votes)

Total Votes: 928
8:44
I'm leaning towards no, because right now I have Baltimore, Houston, Texas, Tampa, and the AL Central winners as the playoff field.  Plus the Yankees and Mariners have improved themselves, and perhaps Boston or another Central team will emerge.
That said, Turner was one of the free agents I was hoping the Jays would land, so I think that's a great move for them

Stearns/Cohen gonna surprise us with a DH bat?  Last 3 bullpen signings came out of nowhere - no leaks
Mark P
8:46
The Mets seem to be leaning towards cycling several players through the DH spot, which is probably a wise move to get at-bats for their younger guys and to give partial rest days to the veterans

Thoughts on the Burnes trade?

Thoughts on the Corbin Burnes trade? How do you grade the deal for each side?
Orioles
8:47
How do you feel about the Orioles getting Burns from the Brewers? Can we expect anything else from the Orioles either before the season starts,or at the trade deadline if they are in contention?
Mark P
8:49
Seemed like a terrific move for Baltimore.  Between the comp pick and the QO pick they'll almost surely get for Burnes next winter, the draft capital should just about cancel out, making it basically Burnes for Ortiz/Hall.

Ortiz is, imo, an underrated prospect.  He'd get a lot more buzz if he wasn't behind so many other bigger names in Baltimore's farm system, and I can see him as a quality regular in the majors.  By all accounts his glove is more than ready, so it'll just be a matter of how much he hits.  Hall feels more like a reliever than a starter candidate to me, but getting a good long-term reliever out of the deal is still a pretty good return.
8:51
From Baltimore's perspective, Ortiz and Hall are pieces they can relatively afford to lose, given the incredible depth of their minor league depth.

For Milwaukee it looks like a good return, if not the blockbuster that Brew Crew fans were hoping for.  I do wonder how this offseason plays out if Woodruff was healthy, since that injury seemed to absolutely shift everything about the team's plans

Is Ross Atkins really planning on going into the season with IKF as the primary 3B? Toronto are supposed to be deep into their contention window, does Atkins think IKF is good enough to contend with? Really?
Mark P

We can pencil Turner in for a good chunk of that third base time, plus Biggio or Barger could get involved
Salt Lake City fan
8:55
It feels like a no-brainer for the A's to temporarily play in SLC from 2025-2027 right?  As someone who lives near SLC, we don't have an MLB "home team".  If the A's play here for 3-4 years and then are in Vegas (a 6-hour drive (plus it's VEGAS)), they would obviously become our adopted team.  It's no guarantee we get an expansion team.
Mark P
8:56
This might seem like the most logical move for the A's, depending on whether they can secure another temporary TV deal since obviously their "Bay Area" geographical clause doesn't exactly stretch to Utah.

If any eccentric billionaires are reading this chat and want to get an expansion team for SLC and call them the Beads, I'd laugh forever

Seems like almost *too many bullpen additions for Twins on what is already a loaded strength.  Theoretically if TV revenue speculation is correct they should have $20-25M to spend now.  Last holes are a playoff #2 and CF backup.  Do you see them filling these or anything brewing with that money?   Plenty of prospect trade chips as well.
Mark P
8:58
"You can never have enough pitching" etc.

But, maybe Minnesota is considering dealing one of the lower-level relievers
John
8:59
There's a ton of talk about what the Bears will do with the #1 overall pick, whether to trade it or not. Why hasn't baseball made draft picks tradeable? Might not be as exciting as the NFL and NBA drafts, but would still be more exciting.
Mark P
9:00
I agree.  I don't think you'll see the very top picks dealt in a world where all picks are eligible in trades, but it would happen just often enough to really spice up the proceedings.
9:01
Like this year, if you're a Reds team who lucked into the #2 overall pick, wouldn't it be interesting to see if the Reds would offer up that pick as part of an offer for a top pitcher?
