If the Orioles do add another pitcher, a trade seems likelier than a signing

What's the buzz around the league about the Chisox possibly getting a new stadium?
Mark P
7:59
The renderings look fantastic, I'll say that.  But I have my doubts that the White Sox will land the $1 billion they say they want from local officials to make this happen.  Not to say that this ballpark project won't eventually get off the ground, but just not at that price

Any chance Phil’s trade for Presley from Adtros?
Mark P
8:01
Seems extremely doubtful that the Astros would sign Hader and then trade Pressly, so no

Can’t say I’ve followed too closely, but has there been any Bellinger rumors this winter? I haven’t seen anyone connected to him or any offers made.

Any chance the Padres trade for Willy Adames with what's going on there now?
Mark P
8:03
Doesn't seem like a fit, since the Padres' biggest needs are in the outfield and rotation.

Isn’t it the “Boras Five” with JD Martinez?
Mark P
8:04
JDM's projected contract is much lower than the mega-deals projected for Snell and company

Hello. Will my guards ever get bat? They have abundance pitching and infielders. Thank you,
Mark P
8:06
The frustrating part for Guardians fans is that the team apparently had bats, but then traded Caminero, Jones, Diaz, and Benson away for veritable peanuts.

I think I'm still higher on the Guards than most since their ability to develop pitching will always keep them semi-competitive, but it isn't heartening that they've basically taken the entire offseason off with very little improvement to the lineup.
Morel
8:07
Counsell putting Morel at 3B is a recipe for disaster, isn’t it?   A bunch of minor league seasons and a couple upshould be enough that he can’t handle the position, right?
Mark P
8:07
There's no real harm in giving Morel more reps, but I agree that it doesn't seem like 3B is really in his future

With the AL Central seemingly there for the taking, should the Tigers look at  signing Montgomery? They have the cash, he is dependable and they seem to be lacking a for sure #2 behind Skubal. They could trade some of their surplus pitching to fill other needs.
Mark P
8:11
Detroit would be a really interesting dark horse here, if the front office or ownership was interested in making a splash.  Scott Harris has been pretty conservative in his moves to date, and obviously the Tigers still want to see what they have with their in-house arms, but an argument can surely be made that signing Montgomery would really re-spark fan interest.
Florida Buc

I think the reports of the bucs getting Cabrera are based on a low ask by the marlins. What do u think the fish need to get back from the bucs to say "yes"?
Mark P
8:14
One factor I didn't mention earlier is that Garrett's injury might possibly be a late obstacle to a trade.  As in, perhaps the Pirates and Marlins were pretty close to the finish line on a Cabrera trade before Garrett showed up with to camp with a sore shoulder, and now the Fish are re-evaluating

With Bregman and Tucker going and a barren farm, is this the last year of the Astros’ contention window?
Mark P
8:16
Tucker and Valdez (and possibly Verlander/Pressly, based on vesting options) are all free agents after 2025, so perhaps the 2025 season might be something of a 'last dance' for this version of the Astros.

But, this organization has done well enough at replenishing the ranks that I could see them reloading and keeping the window open deeper into the decade

Could NYY extend Soto before he reaches FA after this season ?
Mark P
8:18
The Yankees as a general rule don't extend anyone, and they'd have to go above and beyond to convince Soto to stay off the free agent market.  So an extension seems highly unlikely.

Is it possible at all that the Mariners sign Chapman? There has been some smoke about the team internally discussing him from The Seattle Times.
Mark P
8:20
At this point, I'd have to imagine many teams besides just the Mariners have had some internal talks along the lines of "hey, this player or these guys are still available, why don't we...."

But, Seattle and many of these possible late suitors are probably in the same boat of hoping asking prices drop, and if that happens, who knows who else might get involved or what kind of creative contracts will be proposed

Cease for Holliday straight up. Likely now the O’s are in a tight spot?
Mark P
8:20
There is a less than zero chance Holliday is traded.

Why all the Harper extension talk when he still has 7 years left on deal.   Plus he is coming back from TJS.
Mark P
8:23
Harper kind of downplayed it when talking to reporters this weekend, perhaps because the public reaction was a collective "huh?"  I have no doubt that Harper wants to play for as long as he can, and perhaps the TJ surgery served as a reminder of how baseball careers can be fleeting.  But, it's frankly kind of a bad look to be angling for an extension when you're already signed through 2031
Whose your Friar
8:24
Why don’t the Pads simply play Cronenworth in LF? It would clear up the IF congestion and fill another hole in their lineup. Then get M Taylor and Dom Smith and play ball! SP might be a bit rough until mid season when some of their pitching prospects are in a better position to help the big club. But the defense would be good and you could dream on Smith having a good year on offense
Mark P
8:25
I'm not sure Dominic Smith is exactly a surefire answer to the Padres' problems.  Plus, Cronenworth has played exactly one game in the outfield as a pro, and that was back during his minor league days.

Taylor seems like he'd be a great fit for the Padres, however.

Do you feel like the Cardinals have approached this offseason with a series of half measures, rather than a full blown commitment to rebuilding the pitching staff?  If this was the plan, they should have traded Goldy, Arenado, and Contreras at the deadline last season.
Mark P
8:28
I've said this since last season, but it seems like the Cardinals are halfway between viewing 2023 as just a Murphy's Law type of year, and acknowledging that there might be some bigger-picture concerns within their organization.  This winter's moves seem like something of a similar hedge, and if things don't work out for the team, you could see some bigger moves like a Goldschmidt trade at the deadline.
8:29
Obviously the TV situation also played a role in the Cards' spending, as well

Ryan divish says the mariners have internally discussed matt Chapman, I know this is the case with all free agents, but do you think the mariners could be a surprise landing spot for one of the boras guys?
Mark P
8:31
Moreso than Chapman, I could maybe see Snell taking some kind of option-heavy shorter-term deal just because he's from Seattle?  It won't be a total hometown discount or anything, but it might be that there's some room for creativity there

With no extension talks given it's his walk year, what do think the Yanks will do with Torres?
Mark P
8:31
I think he'll play the year out in the Bronx and then sign elsewhere next winter.

Can Tarik Skubal Be a Cy Young Candidate this season ?
Mark P
8:32
He's not in my top tier of potential CY candidates, yet it also wouldn't shock me if Skubal stays healthy and delivers a whopper of a season.
