Since Vegas fans don't seem to want the A's, probably not that much?  From what I've read, Vegas seems like a Dodgers town more than anything.

You alluded to Rays FO brain drain earlier in chat. Seems like it happens more to rays than other orgs. Is that fact or just public perception that Rays are worse at retaining their front office talent?
Mark P
8:38
"Worse at retaining" isn't the issue.  Tampa's ability to keep delivering quality results on small payrolls is envied throughout the league, which is why Rays executives keep getting hired away by rival clubs looking to replicate the formula themselves

Best motion picture?
Mark P
8:39
I've seen a couple more of the Best Picture nominees since the last time someone asked me this question, but Holdovers is still my favourite of the year thus far.

I’m still confused about the Brewers offseason.
Mark P
8:41
They knew Burnes was leaving in free agency so they dealt him for some young talent that could help them as soon as this season.  The Brewers have been clear that they don't want to ever totally rebuild, so blowing things up entirely never seemed that realistic an option

Have I been playing the Montgomery market right all along??
Mark P
8:43
Boston fans will suddenly feel a lot better about the offseason if the Sox actually did get Montgomery (or another notable starter).
And, call me crazy, but I wouldn't be surprised if Boston is sneaky good this year.

Rats, I try so hard to keep my natural Canadian spelling out of my MLBTR work, but a stray U will fly in there every once in a while

The Phillies are done right? But at what price would we jump on snell? 3 for 95 for buyouts?
Mark P
8:47
Since the Phillies were so high on Nola's durability, my guess is that Montgomery would be their preferred choice if they did decide to make a move for one of the two big SPs remaining.
AA

Feels like with impending departure of Fried taking a run on shorter deal for Montgomery or Snell would improve chances of retaining one for 2025
Mark P
8:48
Someone earlier in chat (sorry, I seem to have lost the question) mentioned that Montgomery is from South Carolina, perhaps giving the Braves yet another geographical edge in acquiring a player
8:49
Signing Montgomery out of nowhere would be such an Anthopoulos move, and it would set them up for Fried's possible departure next year

Candelario signing looking better and better now with both McClain and India slowed. Not hindsight - just the quality depth that the Reds are valuing
Mark P
8:50
For as much as people rolled their eyes over Nick Krall's statements about keeping India and wanting depth on the roster.....he wasn't wrong.  Cincinnati shouldn't and hasn't just assumed that their young guns are all ready to go from 2024 onward

Who is the first manager fired?  I’m thinking Marmol.
Mark P
8:52
I dunno, it's not like St. Louis has a franchise legend on the staff who has openly talked about being a manager....oh wait....

Trout has been getting hurt for years now, but last season his rate stats took a hit for the first time. Should he move to full time DH at this point?
Mark P
8:55
The defensive metrics suggest that a move to a corner outfield spot should be a conversation the Angels should be having with Trout, though it's hard to attribute his bad injury luck solely to playing center field.

A full-time DH spot isn't yet necessary, but one silver lining of Ohtani's departure is that the Halos can now move multiple players in and out of the DH spot.  This would certainly seem to help Trout's chances of staying off the IL

How long before we hear Luis Robert’s name in trade rumors? That team is on the decline once again
Mark P
8:58
Robert's name has been floated in rumors this winter, though Chris Getz made a point of saying that a Robert deal was very unlikely (while saying the Sox were open for business on everyone else).  Robert is such a huge asset that the White Sox won't be moving him until they maybe take a turn towards full rebuild, or acknowledge that they won't be able to get this thing turned around in a season or two

Is the recent Yankees-Snell rumor true, or is it just agent manipulation?
Mark P
I see no reason to doubt that the Yankees have continued interest in Snell, and might have had an offer on the table for a while.  But, we don't know how much that offer might be worth, or if the Yankees are perhaps now looking to spend less if they feel Snell's market is even more limited.

I turned down SF because Im a Miami native and the Marlins have an obvious hole. How much longer will I make Marlins Twitter wait for it?
Mark P
9:03
The Marlins have done so little this winter that they might not be willing to meet even Martinez's relatively modest asking price
Geoff

Is there a FA out there that surprising to you hasn’t generated a lot of buzz?
Mark P
9:05
Besides the big name guys, Tommy Pham still being available is a little surprising.
Cards
9:05
Why do the cards continue to use Liberatore as a starter he seems like he could be a pretty nice weapon out of the pen? Thompson in my opinion is the one better suited for rotation work
Mark P
9:05
Teams generally don't give up on starters as, well, starter candidates until they're forced to.
Russ Atkins
9:07
Are you surprised the reds kept their Ibfield depth vs going after more starting pitching?
Mark P
9:07
I did think they would be a bit more aggressive in getting pitching, but I can understand the Reds' desire to keep their guys until they know what they really have with their younger infielders.

Any idea why John Henry doesn't want to spend any money?
Mark P
9:09
He's spending plenty of money, but it's just on the soccer team, the hockey team, the PGA Tour, etc.
