How much value does Zeke Duran have around the league? He's important depth for Seager missing time, but it seems to be a waste of his talent level to use him as a utility guy.
Mark P
9:11
It's possible Texas might eventually look to deal Duran, but there's no rush at this point, and they need him given Seager and Jung's injury uncertainty.  The Rangers have the luxury of some really interesting young players as depth to their proven stars, so no reason to give that up yet as they chase another title

Does Urshela to the Tigers Block any young infielders coming up ?
Mark P
9:13
Not for long, since Urshela is only on a one-year deal.  Seems like Detroit wants Jung to get a bit more seasoning in the minors, and they felt Urshela was a better bet than relying on the McKinstry/Ibanez/Vierling trio to hold down third base
9:14
Urshela is a sneaky-good pickup if he's healthy again, so this is yet another Tigers offseason move I've liked

Hard to believe when GM's say they've looked into all options for SP's when the Lorenzen market is crickets
Mark P
9:15
With Snell and Montgomery still available, it's holding things up on guys like Lorenzen or Clevinger.  Same as how Ohtani and Yamamoto held up the SP market earlier this winter

Hey Mark, I predict the ms win 70 games and miss the playoffs their defense is horrible what say you?
Mark P
9:17
They'll win more than 70 games.  I think Seattle's going to be pretty good

Do you think Kelenic to Braves was ploy to land a starter with him in the package or they targeted him specifically for LF?
Mark P
9:18
They thought enough of Kelenic that they were willing to take on a good chunk of salary from the Mariners' books, so clearly Atlanta thinks Kelenic needs a change of scenery

Will Carlos Rodon bounce back?
Mark P
9:21
It's a simplistic answer, but if he's healthy, Rodon is an excellent pitcher.  Staying off the IL is a tall order given his injury history, admittedly, but Bronx fans shouldn't write Rodon off after one bad year

Is compensation less if teams wait to a certain time frame to sign a free agent?
Mark P
9:23
The draft pick compensation attached to qualifying-offer free agents (i.e. Snell, Chapman) evaporates after the draft.

This happened to a couple of players back when the draft was held earlier in the season, but it's hard to imagine those players sitting out until the All-Star break

Will Joey Votto be on roster this season?
Mark P
9:23
There hasn't been much Votto buzz, so it's not looking good
Pirates
9:24
Is it possible that we are big buyers next off season? With Paul skenes an expected ace and a full year of Cruz. Is 2025 the year to go?
Mark P
9:25
I'll have to see it before I believe that the Pirates will spend to any significant amount.  Notwithstanding the Keller extension, locking up a young in-house player is much different than signing a premium free agent.  Or, in the Pirates' case, even a mid-tier free agent.
Natsman

Ar ethe Nats done?  I think they could use a couple more pieces from the same tier.  A good innings eater would help their bullpen stay fresher.

9:29
We had a piece about this for MLBTR Front Office subscribers recently, where Steve Adams (I think it was Steve?) was basically outright incredulous that the Nationals were claiming to be done with their offseason pitching search. Obviously the Nats are still in a rebuild and they're limiting payroll, but you're correct in saying that signing someone even to fill innings would be a big help.

It doesn't help a younger team, for instance, if a few injuries crop up and there's a scramble to fill innings and perhaps toss some young pitchers into roles they're not yet ready to fill

On 24 other teams, I'd be no lower than their #2 or #3 rated prospect. Any specific teams that might want to trade pitching for me?
Mark P
9:30
After the Brewers trade, it's possible Baltimore is done with significant prospect moves for the offseason.  Mike Elias had a relatively positive update on Bradish the other day, so the O's don't appear to be feeling pressure to go get another starter.

Then again, "don't appear to be" and what calls Elias might be making behind the scenes could be two different things

That's two hours here, so the Weekend Chat is closing up.  Wow, we get through the entire two hours without even one....
