The Astros aren't moving anyone unless this is an inexplicable disaster season for them.  As for the White Sox....well, they can start pretty much any time now.  Given how Getz held out for so long on a Cease trade, I'd expect him to wait until closer to the deadline before really getting serious about moving any of the big trade chips.

Thoughts on the whole Oakland situation. The coliseum sucks but I can’t imagine sacrementos minor league stadium being much better. Especially for 3-4 years while/if a stadium gets built in Vegas.
Mark P
8:09
I'm not the first to point this out, but everything about this move has been so haphazardly done.  The fact that they announced this move to Sacramento without even first figuring out what will happen with the Triple-A team is bafflng.
But it's clear that the A's just wanted out of Oakland at all costs, and to retain their half of the Coliseum for as long as possible.

There's surely no way Cody Rhodes is losing for the second straight year.

How does Cole's situation affect his opt out choices and the Yanks tacking on an extra year?
Mark P
8:11
The latest reports suggest that Cole is making good progress, so if he's able to just return once the 60 days are all, this injury might look like a relative blip on the radar.  I still predict the Yankees will add the extra year and avoid the opt-out situation entirely.

Marlins are sad, give me a glimmer of hope regarding an Arraez extension and the cost.
Mark P
8:13
At this point it seems like there's a much better chance Arraez is traded than extended.  And if you're Arraez, would you necessarily want to stay in Miami long-term given the constant turmoil?

How are bonuses paid out for minor league and international players?  Is it up front or spread out?  If those players are traded, does the acquiring team only have to pay the standard minor league salary?
Mark P
8:15
I believe it's all up front.  Though in some cases, it could be technically held in a trust or something or under a parent/guardian's supervision until the kid turns 18.

What is up with all the injuries? What is your opinion on the cause

On pitching injuries.  Is MLBPA overreacting because guys like Bieber, Strider, and Cole are hurt and not some back end starters on non-contending teams?

So many injuries so early in the year. I know there’s major injuries every year, but it certainly feels like the number has been increasing. Can anything be done to slow them down at least?

Justin Verlander had a really good interview on this subject today, as per Ari Alexander's Twitter feed

https://twitter.com/AriA1exander/status/1777102272641536381
8:19
Not to totally parrot what Verlander said, but I agree that it's basically a perfect storm of everything that is leading to these injuries.  Between how teams and players approach pitching these days, to pitchers perhaps being a little too set in routines that making adjustments really throws them off, and the change wrought by the pitch clock having an unintended side effect.

The whole act of throwing a baseball is unnatural, and almost every pitcher has some kind of arm problem at some point in their careers.  In that sense injury is somewhat inevitable, but there certainly must be ways to minimize risk as much as possible while still allowing the pitcher to maximize as much of their potential as possible

Yankees will need an upgrade at closer at some point. It’s early but any thoughts on a good closer on a bad team that may become available by summer?

we are 10-2, can we deal some xtra infield depth/ package for another SP or a BAT ?
Mark P
8:24
I'd opt for pitching as the greater need, since I have more questions about the Pirates' rotation than I do their lineup.  Or, in a perfect world, they'd upgrade in both areas, but it'll be interesting to see how Cherington will approach a deadline if the Bucs are actually in contention.  We can assume he won't suddenly get any extra payroll space to work with, so he might have to be a little aggressive in moving prospects to acquire upgrades who also aren't expensive

What do dbacks do with the bullpen? You can say it’s early but there’s not much hope.

I mean...it IS early.  And things should improve when Sewald gets back.

I'm a Padre supporter but I've always loved the Orioles. Do you root for a NL team along with your Jays?
Mark P
8:29
I'm more of a situational fan within the NL, since I'll root for various teams based on if they have a cool story, or if they haven't won in a while, etc.

I've long had a soft spot for the Dodgers because they were my dad's favorite team growing up, and for the Phillies because as a kid I loved their old uniforms.  (In my recent trip to Clearwater for Spring Training, I went out of my way to get a shirt with the old Phils logo.)

Buster Olney tweeted recently: "Within other organizations, there is a lot of disgust with how the A’s have handled the ballpark situation — especially when there’s no actual ballpark plan settled in Las Vegas. And there is an assumption the A’s will tank in the next few years, because their revenue stream will be down to a trickle. 'This makes us all look bad,' said one person." My question is - then why didn't one organization try to stop any of this from happening? Why not throw up a roadblock? Ask questions about funding sources? Force a sale if Fisher is too poor?
Mark P
8:31
You'd need a sizeable group of owners (not just one of them) to stand up and object about the situation, given how the league seems pretty committed to getting into the Vegas market.

Does Bart end up staying with Bucs if/when Grandol is healthy?
Mark P
8:33
Good question, and the Bucs themselves might not know this answer.  Delay could be optioned to Triple-A when he's healthy, but as for Grandal....maybe they use Bart/Grandal as the primary catchers and rotate Davis as a catcher, outfielder, and DH?

What do the Padres need in order to get the offense going?Great starting pitching is being wasted.
Mark P
8:36
Stunningly, replacing Juan Soto with Jurickson Profar didn't help the offense.

Obviously it's early, and the Padres have too much talent in that lineup to struggle forever.  But after last season, I don't blame SD fans for again being wary of a lineup that seems to be missing a lot of chances at driving in runs

Why hasn’t Brandon belt signed?
Mark P
8:38
As Belt seemed to explain it in that recent interview, he seemed to be a universal backup plan for a lot of teams, except those interested teams all found their first choice.  Combined with several teams sitting out the market entirely due to payroll considerations, Belt unfortunately got squeezed out.
8:39
As a Jays fan, I know I'd be feeling a lot better about this team if the IKF money had gone to Belt, since then Turner plays 3B and gets whatever 1B/DH time is available between Guerrero playing every day, and Belt sitting against lefties

With the injuries to SP, do you think this may make teams take a second look at Bauer?
Mark P
8:40
This question is asked all the time, and my answer is the same....I don't think any team wants the PR hit that comes with signing Bauer.

This year so far for the padres is giving me flashbacks of last year. When does ownership (which is now different) finally realize it’s culture and make a change starting with AJ at the top?
Mark P
8:43
If the Padres don't make the playoffs this year, I suspect Preller will be out.  It could be that the Padres undergo some level of a rebuild, though not a full-scale overhaul since they have just so much money on the books, and surely ownership doesn't totally want to undo the fandom gains made in the last few years.
