Marlins worst team in baseball?
Brett
8:44
Will the White Sox challenge the all time loss record? Offseason was pathetic and it shows in their play.
Rox
8:44
today was the first time the Rox let up less than 4 runs this season. This the worst team you’ve ever seen?
Mark P
8:45
Lots of questions along these lines in the queue, and I think White Sox fans have a slight edge in the "our season is doomed" race based on sheer volume of comments.

Marlins… what gives?? Any insight into logic of franchise that had good progress in 2023 and now top two baseball people are on their way out??
Mark P
8:48
It wasn't any great secret that the Marlins got a bit lucky last year, yet there was enough talent on the team that taking a step back and now perhaps leaning towards a rebuild just to "be more like the Rays" seems like a over-reaction
8:50
If Sherman was so eager for a Rays-style organization, I don't understand why he didn't just let go of Ng after the 2022 season, if he wanted to hire a GM/president of baseball operations who didn't have ties to Jeter.  Instead, it created this awkward situation where he let Ng hire her pick as manager, and then the 2023 team was good enough to make the playoffs.....and then Ng left because she (understandably) didn't want to accept a demotion, and now Schumaker also seems halfway out the door.

How do you think player development was affected by no minor leagues in the 2020 season.   The only thing close to it was WW II when many minor leagues closed...
Mark P
8:52
This is an underrated aspect that many people overlook in the pitching injury controversy, in my opinion.  2020 was such a weird change to every pitcher's routine (whether an established big leaguer or a minor leaguer on his way up) that the aftershocks are still being felt

Serious? The Phillies?? Yuck!! The Pirates have the best uniforms from the 1970’s to present. Leave the dark side (Phillies) and come to the light dude!
Mark P
8:54
I also have a soft spot for the Pirates!  PNC Park is arguably my favorite ballpark, and the Bucs have a great history.  I also own a Clemente jersey, so I'm even well-represented on the merch front

Are Mullins and Hays' days numbered for the O's with Cowser on the roster and Stowers (1.253 OPS) and Kjerstad (1.659) tearing it up in Triple A?  What team might want Mullins and Hays?  And what could the Orioles reasonably expect in return?
Mark P
8:56
Before the season I would've said O'Hearn might be the odd man out since he was basically found money anyway, but O'Hearn has been on fire at the plate and more than earned his playing time.

Again....it's still very early.  I'm sure Hays and Mullins are going to heat up at some point.  But, in terms of guys who are actually on the roster, Cowser should get more of a look.

Where does Strasburg rank in the pantheon of Washington DC pitchers?
Mark P
8:59
The DC pitching Mount Rushmore is Johnson, Scherzer, Strasburg, and probably someone incredibly prominent from the old Senators days that I'm forgetting.

Will Pete Alonso be a Met after the trade deadline?
Mark P
9:00
Tough call.  I think they'll try to re-sign him as a free agent, but that doesn't mean they couldn't first trade him for prospect help and then try to bring him back.

Who’s the biggest loss to their team: Strider, Bieber, or Perez?
Mark P
9:02
Interesting question, since it can be argued that Strider is a "bigger loss" since he might prevent a team from winning a championship.  Or, Bieber and Perez could very well be viewed as bigger losses since their absence might prevent their teams from making the playoffs, or in Miami's case even being competitive.

I guess I'll go with Perez for now, since we don't yet know if Strider will indeed be facing a season-long recovery

Explain how the int'l rules work if Roki Sasaki gets posted
Mark P
9:05
Sasaki is under 25 years old and he has less than six seasons played with his NPB team, so if he did jump to the majors, MLB clubs could only offer him deals based on funds from their international signing pools.  It would be akin to Ohtani's jump to the majors, as you'll recall he signed with the Angels for a minor league contract with a $2.3MM bonus

What is the deal with the Ms revamped lineup? They're striking out at an alarming clip, just like last year. Is this a coaching/message issue?
Mark P
9:07
Obligatory "it's still early" note, plus the Mariners ran into some good arms between the Guardians and the unexpectedly great Red Sox staff.

The Athletic reported today that McKenzie is pitching with a tear in his UCL.  Do you think that's wise?  Do you think he'll make it through the year?
Mark P
9:09
It's McKenzie's choice, and if he's comfortable with the risk, that's that.  Masahiro Tanaka is the prime example of a pitcher who managed to pitch through a UCL tear without surgery, yet Tanaka is the top of a very short list of such hurlers

With star pitchers getting hurt, what do you see a contract for Corbin Burnes looking like?
Mark P
9:11
Burnes is landing a huge contract no matter who's healthy or not.  He'll certainly be aiming for well over $200MM
9:13
At least a six-year contract, and an AAV of well over $30MM a season
Jay
9:14
In regards to Sasaki, the Lotte Marines would only get a percentage of Sasaki’s contract as a posting fee, not the 20m Ohtani generated bc the rules changed. Why would the Marines post him unless contractually obligated to do so bc the posting fee would be a percentage of a small contract.
Mark P
9:15
There have been some rumors that Sasaki indeed has an out clause, though if that's the case, I'm not sure why the Marines would've felt compelled to include such a clause unless that's simply the way it goes when dealing with perhaps a unique generational talent.

I know it's early, but the 3 players the mariners jettisoned are tearing it up! Plus the mariners are still striking out at an epic pace. Is dipoto in trouble if the mariners crash and burn, or was it financial pressures that caused him to dump Hernandez, kelenic, Suarez?
Mark P
9:19
Finances surely played a role in the Kelenic trade, though there was some sense that M's brass had lost faith in Kelenic as a future star.

Obviously it's still early, plus Kelenic also had a hot start last year before drastically cooling down.  But if he does end up living up to expectations, questions must be asked about why Seattle couldn't unlock that potential themselves, let alone dumping him primarily to get bad contracts off the books

Is the gap between triple A and MLB at an all time high? Minor League Baseball has sort of morphed into glorified practice now facing the same team six straight days.
Mark P
9:22
Interesting observation, and obviously there have always been difficulties in truly evaluating prospects due to the vast logistical differences between the leagues.  For instance, look at how pitchers and hitters are impacted playing in the Pacific Coast League, since just looking at their numbers presents a skewed view.

LAD should get more pitching, Stone, Grove not the answers they proved it.  I know short leash but... infield left side bad.  Get a bonfire ss to move Mookie back to 2nd and trade Lux
Mark P
9:24
The Dodgers have enough pitchers coming back midseason that that could be their internal way of adding arms, but they'll surely explore the market at the deadline.  "You can never have enough pitching" and all that.

What would Blackburn cost Cleveland in trade?
Mark P
9:24
Not the Guards' style to trade for controllable pitching.  This doesn't seem like a fit.
