I think it's more of a perfect storm of circumstances hitting the free agent market this year, rather than a real sign that Boras has lost his fastball.  After all, he'll have plenty of clients signing huge contracts next winter, so it's not like the Boras Corp will have trouble keeping the lights on.
Tommy Pham
9:16
Why didn’t I have more appeal earlier in the season?
KC Pain
9:16
but....why would Pham get a minor deal w them vs a major deal? Holding out that long for a minors deal?
Mark P
9:17
As Ken Rosenthal explained, it seems like it's a "minor league deal" just for structural reasons, since Pham is out of minor league options.  He'll be called up to the majors relatively soon and then his salary will be guaranteed
AA
9:18
I have no clue where I can trade/get another rm for my rotation?! Any ideas?
Mark P
9:19
Atlanta has plenty of in-house arms to bide their time until closer to the trade deadline, when other options might be available.  Or, best case scenario, one of the in-house pitchers does well enough that the Braves don't need to splurge on SP at all
TO Today
9:20
Moreno and Gurriel Jr.  trade is the worst trade I have seen in the 33 years I have been following the Jays.  Perhaps the stupidest trade ever.  Convince me otherwise.
Mark P
9:21
The Michael Young and Roy Halladay trades are far worse.  The Moreno/Gurriel for Varsho deal certainly doesn't look good now, I grant you that
Dodger Dude

Get out your crystal ball and tell us what month (or year) the Dodgers will see Buehler, Kershaw, May, and Gonsolin make their next start.
Mark P
9:22
Buehler in May or early June.  Kershaw/May in late July or in August.  Gonsolin in April 2025
Melchez
9:24
When do the Astros start selling?
Mark P
9:24
They don't.  They'll get back on track, especially since Verlander and (apparently) Valdez are back soon

Help settle an argument. I believe an 8 pitch at bat that results in an out is ultimately better for your overall offensive output than a first pitch single, but my buddies told me I'm wrong. Who is right?
Mark P
9:26
Hot take: a hit is better than an out.

I almost missed the chat because I was watching a game… Anyway, all this fuss about picture injuries ors the fact that the rate of Tommy John’s per season has been consistently single digits for years. There are not appreciably more injuries, rather, the guy being injured are the stars. So it’s not that more guys are getting hurt. It’s that special guys are getting hurt. What say you?
Mark P
9:28
There are more injuries happening in terms of sheer numbers, if you count all levels of baseball.  But I do agree in some respect that the problem gains more attention now because of the greater media landscape, or because of factors like fantasy baseball or gambling.

Early off-season question: Would Bieber be a fit for the Mets? Or does he return to CLE in similar fashion to how MIL retained Woodruff?
Mark P
9:30
A reunion with the Guards does seem to make sense for Bieber, though only he knows how he wants to approach the next two years of his life and career.  Heck, even he might not know yet, given how he only just had his TJ surgrey

Phillies need a young right handed hitting outfielder.  Not sure Castellanos will be with team after this year.  I know teams seldom trade top prospects but what about a Phillies-Orioles trade?  Mike Abel for Connor Norby.  I know Connor is a second baseman but he has also played left field.  Move Marsh to right, Rojas in center and Norby in left.  Good young outfield to balance age in other positions (Turner, Harper, Realmuto).  Phils have surplus of pitching and Orioles need it.
Mark P
9:31
That's a fun idea for a trade, though "surplus of pitching" isn't exactly how I'd describe the Phillies, if only because no team ever feels they truly have enough pitching

Beauty and the Beast

Why not more knuckle ballers these days? They can pitch until 40's without any arm trouble.
Mark P
9:33
Learning how to effectively throw a knuckleball at a MLB level isn't exactly easy.  There's a reason a lot of pitchers only turn to the knuckler as something of a last resort.

9:33
If Jobe is a hall of famer Tommy John should be as well
Mark P
9:34
I might have to sit down and see how I'd weigh Tommy John against "guy I just said didn't make the Cooperstown cut" Andrew McCutchen, but I'd lean towards TJ being in the Hall

9:34
I think EsquireTerp's take is the toll it takes on the pitcher, which could ultimately benefit the offense.  Yes, getting a hit is better at that moment, but the long term effect in THAT game could definitely benefit the offense by getting to the bullpen sooner.
Mark P
9:35
In an era with so many effective and hard-throwing relievers, getting to the bullpen sooner might not be a plus
9:55
And now that the Julio Teheran post has been written, let's get back to this very raggedly moderated chat.  Sorry for the interruptions, folks.....blame the White Sox and Cubs for making notable signings on a Sunday night!  What's the deal here Chicago, I was always cool with you!
Doyer
9:56
If MLB extend the number of active roster players 28 to 30 (so more pitchers available), would it save pitchers' arms more efficiently?
Mark P
9:57
The league isn't going to agree to bump the number of active players, since that means more money has to be spent
Marky Mark

So what's on the playlist tonight?
Mark P
9:57
Is there a song called "Sorry For This Weird Chat?"

Anyway, the answer is Downtime, by Gandharvas

Marky P, I asked about 200 questions which are ALL good questions otherwise I wouldn't be asking them lol.  Jackson Holliday finishes in the top 2 for ROY and bats close to .300 ummmmm thoughts???
Mark P
9:58
This certainly seems possible.  Holliday having a slow start in his first few games doesn't change his potential one iota

What happened to Joey Votto? It’s been almost a month since his injury
Mark P
9:59
Votto tweaked his ankle, so he needed to get that healed even before getting into any proper prep and ramp-up work
Too many catchers
10:01
Will the Cardinals use their surplus of catching prospects to their advantage, I know you can never have too much of something but with the MLB level locked up I’d have to assume one of Bernal/Pages/Crooks could be on the move shortly
Mark P
10:02
That makes sense, even if none of the three guys you mentioned are blue-chippers, exactly.
