Verlander did  not look too good in his rehab appearances.  Reason to be concerned?
Mark P
10:03
Most starters are just using rehab starts to work on pitches and make sure they're feeling right on the mound.  They're not necessarily worried about bad results.
10:04
Now, as a Jays fan, I have a different answer if you'd asked me this question about Alek Manoah's rehab starts, since there are larger problems in that situation

10:04
If the White Sox continue at this level of ineptitude, will it result in any organizational changes in the next month?
Tom
10:04
The White Sox have to fire Grifol soon, right? I know it is a bad team, but they have quit on him. No team is this bad.
Mark P
10:05
If this season goes totally sideways (as it perhaps has already), I can see ownership okaying a complete rebuild, and letting Getz clean house with the coaching staff in addition to the overhaul he's already making within the front office.
Joshua
10:07
Jesse Winker looks like he might be a decent rebound candidate. Think he could possibly be a decent LF/DH left handed bat for a contender at the deadline?
Mark P
10:07
The Brewers and Mariners can probably be ruled out, but otherwise sure, the Nats will definitely get lots of calls about Winker if he keeps hitting like this.

Every team in the AL East is .500 or better.. this division is going to be a blood bath again isn't it.. How do you think it shakes out?
Mark P
10:09
I don't yet see any reason to depart from my preseason AL East order of Orioles, Yankees, Rays, Blue Jays, and Red Sox
Top three of that group all make the playoffs
Tiger universe
10:09
Do you see the tigers making any moves at the trade deadline if they are un wildcard contention?
Mark P
10:10
Absolutely. Adding a bat or two seems obvious, though naturally some of their struggling hitters will (probably?) turn things around sooner or later.

For how much longer is Gleyber Torres the starting 2B in the Bronx?  Defense matters.
Mark P
10:11
I'm pretty sure Torres is in his last year in the Bronx, but they won't be giving up on him anytime soon unless his struggles at the plate continue deep into the season.

Lodolo looked pretty darned good in his start yesterday?  Think he is back to being a dominant SP?
Mark P
10:14
Technically, he's never been a "dominant" pitcher at the MLB level.  He strung together some good starts in his rookie year but wasn't exactly a phenom.

There's certainly a chance Lodolo bounces back from his injuries and pitches well, though I'd perhaps hold off on the parade until he has more than one start (against the woeful White Sox, no less) under his belt

How come the Brave's brass has no love/no respect for Bryce Elder?  He was an All-Star last year and finished the season with a good ERA and 10+ W's.  Now he's not being brought up from Triple A to replace Strider in the ATL Rotation.  Seems nutty to me they don't give Elder the opportunity.
Mark P
10:16
Elder didn't pitch well in the back half of last season, and even his good first half was something of a mirage according to advanced metrics.  The Braves simply seem to prefer their other options to Elder, even in these somewhat dire circumstances of Strider being out
Jill
10:18
Can Cleveland win the division?
Mark P
10:19
The rotation has been shaky, Bieber is gone for the season, and Jose Ramirez hasn't been hitting much...yet the Guards have still managed a winning record.

In a division where the winner might only need to be good rather than great, the Guardians certainly have a shot.  But (tell me if you've heard this before) they need more hitting.
Padres

Where does Belt end up?
Mark P
10:20
San Diego makes a ton of sense once Machado get back to playing third base.

Do you think the orioles will make a trade at the deadline
Mark P
10:21
Yup
Pitcher injuries
10:22
Is there really a solution to the injury crisis when these kids are throwing 90mph+ in middle school/high school? How do fix that?
Mark P
10:23
This is the root of the problem.  Kids, parents, and coaches know that velocity is the easiest way to get a scout's attention, and they're willing to play chicken with a young pitcher's arm health in the hopes of getting signed, or getting a big payday early
10:24
Or even just a scholarship or NIL money from a college team
John
10:24
Does relying on John Means and Kyle Bradish returns too risky being that both are coming off elbow injuries? Should/will the Orioles go for another starter?
MattStats5
10:24
Am I wrong to think my Orioles don't need to do anything drastic to our starting pitching?  I know the Brewers series exposed some warts, but we have Bradish and Means on the mend.  I'd roll the dice with what we have and see where we are at the deadline.
Mark P
10:26
The good news is that the Orioles have a few months to consider this question, and (most importantly) to gauge how healthy Bradish and Means are.  Or any of their other pitchers, for that matter, since injuries can pop up at any moment.

Baltimore has the minor league depth to obtain all manner of pitching help at the deadline, whether it's a headline-grabbing deal for an ace type, or dealing a couple of their lesser prospects or non top-30 types for an innings eater.  It could be that the O's view the Burnes trade as their true big move for the year, and now that they have their "Game 1 starter" guy, they'll hold off on going after any other aces.

First you said the Red Sox would be just fine, then you said you still think they will finish dead last. Can you please elaborate? Most people don't view last place as "just fine". Thank you.
Mark P
10:30
I said they were doing well so far, which is true.  That doesn't mean I necessarily think they'll keep it up for the rest of the year.

And, to be fair, last place in the AL East isn't also a reflection of a "bad" team.  Boston still won 78 games last year despite all its issues, and might well have been in contention in a lot of other divisions

What’s not working right?
Mark P
10:32
A few too many players off to slow starts and maybe just a bit of bad luck.  If you look at the stats, the Giants are basically middle of the pack in everything, so technically they should be a .500 team.

But again, "it's still early..."

It's mindblowing how often Marmol is sitting Winn after a hot start to the year. Any feasible explanation for this?
Mark P
10:35
Winn has started 12 of 16 games, which seems like a strong amount of playing time.  The team will naturally give Crawford some starts against some right-handed pitchers, but it seems pretty clear that Winn is the everyday choice

Bobby Knoop. When he was a coach with the Angels about 30 years ago, he threw a couple of baseballs into the stands for my brother and I, thrilling us to no end.

Do the Braves resign Ozuna, let his go, or trade him considering a good season last year and a hot start to this year??
