I don't see a particular reason for the position to evolve in terms of what types of players spend time there. I'd expect it'll continue to be a place where good offensive players who can't play D elsewhere end up.

Guess if the NL adopts the DH we'd see more well-rounded first basemen overall, since there'd be more places to stash hitters that really can't play the field at all.
