How long is the Pirates' leash on Rowdy Tellez?
Mark P
8:08
It has already been astoundingly long, given that Tellez has been one of the worst hitters in the sport this season.
8:09
You'd think a $3.2MM salary wouldn't provide such job security, yet the Pirates are such low spenders that cutting a player making such a relatively significant salary is no small thing.  I get that the Bucs didn't have many, er, bucks to spend last winter, but their choices in offseason shopping have generally not worked out

The Tigers mentioned spending more once Cabrera and Fielders money were off the books.    Canha, Flaherty and Maeda were nice pickups.   Do they bump the payroll up some more and add some much needed hitting.  Although they did score 14 runs today
Mark P
8:11
We haven't yet seen Scott Harris really splurge on a huge signing, though that doesn't mean he never will, or that ownership won't sign off on a big expenditure.  Granted, the Baez contract is still lingering as a big misfire, but missing on one contract (given by a past office) shouldn't prevent the Tigers from pursuing another big target if they think there's a fit.

That said, there's a difference between the Tigers going after a big target and literally the biggest target possible in Soto.

Man, that guy really gets traded a lot!
Next year nats
8:12
Do the nats spend next year with wood near ready and some
Mark P
8:14
I'd guess the Nationals will want to see Wood in the big leagues and banking a bit of playing time before they decide that the rebuild is over.  They probably won't go full throttle until Crews is also up, but if Wood is promoted and looks like he belongs over whatever time he gets in the rest of 2024, I could see DC being at least a little more aggressive in their shopping this offseason.

Say, a Jayson Werth type of "we're serious" contract to a proven commodity.
Joey
8:14
The nationals should spend… but knowing them they probably wont
Mark P
8:15
There is some logic in the Nats not jumping too soon, however.  Since we just mentioned the Javy Baez contract, you don't want to be the team that thinks they're ready to start contending when they're really still at least a year away

Do you think the orioles make a trade for pitching
Mark P
8:18
What a roller coaster for Orioles fans.  Going from "should be get more pitching" to "wait, do we have too much pitching??" to once again looking for depth.

More will be known on Means and Kremer within the next week or so, but the Means news in particular seems ominous.  I could see the O's getting another Flaherty type (hoping for better results, obviously) at the deadline since by this point they might be looking for strictly depth.  Between Burnes, Bradish, and Rodriguez, that's a nice top three already to head into a playoff series.

Should the giants recent hot streak change anyone’s mind about them? Maybe a legit wild card contender instead of a fringe one that has to get lucky? Or would it be wrong to draw any conclusions from a good stretch against weak teams?
Mark P
8:20
Only five NL teams are over the .500 mark, so the Giants have benefited from a lot of struggles league-wide. As such, it's still quite possible they can stay in contention for the whole year, or even show that they can hit a higher level and become a "legit" contender like you say.

Keep in mind that SF is still missing a lot of prominent names on the injured list

Uh.......how are we in first place with throwing out no name pitchers every other day?!
Mike Trout Mask Replica
8:20
No Stearns, no Counsell, no Hader, no Burnes, no Woodruff, no Williams yet this year…no problem??
Mark P
8:22
The Brewers are a well-run organization that gets the most out of players, and this season might be the best example yet.  While they do need some reinforcements for the rotation at the deadline, never count the Crew out

The Tigers top 3 starters stack up with anyone in baseball.  They are only 3 games out of a wild card. If you were their GM what change would you make on offense to push them ahead of the other teams (trade for a bat, call someone up, cut bait or bench a player)?
Mark P
8:26
A couple of weeks ago I suggested that it was time to demote Colt Keith, so maybe the Tigers brass shouldn't be taking my advice.  :)

But in terms of a bold but not outlandish move....trade Torkelson?  Harris doesn't have the same ties to him since Tork was drafted by the previous front office, and he still has some solid trade value since several teams probably think they can get him on track.  It would be a risk trading a 1-1 player with that much potential, but if it helps get a more win-now kind of bat (with control) into the lineup, maybe it's a wiser big-picture move.

Yankee starting pitching has been surprisingly excellent...assuming they will be buyers at the deadline (and with Cole coming back) where would they try to improve, and what (who) would they use for currency.  Soto likely isn't there next year
Mark P
8:30
The Yankees' hiring of pitching coach Matt Blake is one of their best moves in recent years, since the team has quietly become excellent at improving and developing pitching since Blake came aboard.

I'd expect New York to get some bullpen help at the deadline, but other needs are harder to forecast at the moment since DJLM and Dominguez are still injured.  In terms of trade chips, I can see the team being a bit more aggressive since (as you said) this is an all-in year with Soto on board.  But, as we just noted about the Orioles, "too much pitching" can become thin in a hurry, so I'd be a little surprised to see the Yankees more any more arms after already unloading several pitchers in the Soto trade
21Braves
8:31
Does this Braves team remind you of the 2021 Braves around this time? Or is it just me?
Mark P
8:31
Besides Acuna getting injured, not really?  Atlanta is 30-20 and quite comfortably in position for a playoff spot.  People forget that the 2021 Braves were still under .500 on August 1 before catching fire.
Bob Saccomano
8:32
To piggy back off that previous question. Do you see a scenario where the Mets eat Martes contract in a move for prospects at the deadline?
Mark P
8:32
That seems very plausible.  The Mets did the same at last year's deadline, and Marte's contract only runs through the 2025 season.
8:33
That said, I'm not sure how hot Marte's market will be since he isn't exactly tearing it up at the plate
Dave Roberts
8:34
Will we add another outfielder or second baseman
Mark P
8:35
Yep.  The Dodgers will fill at least one of these holes by the deadline, and conceivably getting a shortstop also allows them to just move Betts back into regular OF duty
Fairweather Phan
8:35
Will the Phillies win 110+?
Mark P
8:35
No.  Not because the Phillies aren't an excellent team, but because it's incredibly hard to win 110 games
Chris
8:38
I am starting to think the net 11m on Rizzo is not worth it, have DJ play 1B but then what at 3B next year?
Mark P
8:38
Some combo of Peraza, Cabrera, LeMahieu, plus the team has the flexibility to bring in a 1B or 3B in a more regular capacity.
8:39
Second base might also be open if Torres leaves, so the Yankees have a lot of questions about the 2025 infield apart from Volpe

How many years and how much money does Tyler O'Neill get in free agency?  That mix of power, speed and defense is nice, and he’ll still be under 30, but his inconsistency and injury history is scary.
Mark P
8:43
O'Neill is one of the more intriguing pending free agents out there, since his market could go in a ton of different directions. A healthy and productive 2024 season will likely make several suitors more comfortable about the idea of making a long-term commitment.  However, only a "good" season or an IL stint of maybe a month or something will make teams again focus on the red flags, and perhaps limit O'Neill to a short-term or even an option-laden type of contract.

8:44
Do you think the A’s move Miller sooner than later? I know there is no hurry but wouldn’t it make sense to try snd get real talent to build a team around? So far their waiver claims turn out better than trade prospects.
Mark P
8:44
I think the A's would be happy to move Miller if another team met their gigantic asking price.  But, it's just a question of whether or not another team would meet that price for a reliever with such a short track record in the majors, albeit a spectacular record

Bill Madlock won 4 NL batting titles in the 1970's & 80's, but he is never mentioned as a potential HOF'er.  Shouldn't he be mentioned as a great player of his era?
Mark P
8:46
Madlock had a fine career but wasn't really in the elite kind of HOF candidate tier.
