His cost will jump if he has a typical season but with lots of saves added in. But there's only one more year for it to rise.
As for an extension ... I don't know. He is pretty young, but it's always risky to make a move on a reliever. Price would really have to be right, as it was w Duffy.

Who should I worry about stealing Lucroy from us next offseason?
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
It's really way too soon to say. Catching is so scarce. An injury could change things. What if Yadi and the Cards don't find a new deal? Etc.
2:29
But if he plays at typical levels, there'll be huge interest. Teams like the Nats, Mets, Red Sox, Rangers ... some big spenders would likely be involved.

What High-Upside Starting pitcher in FA/Trade could the Padres target to potentially bump them into that wild card range?
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
Like, to make them a projected 88-ish win team? Kershaw?

I'm going down to Phoenix for spring training this year. Have you ever been &, if so, any tips?
Jeffrey Todd
2:31
Have not been there for ST. But I will recommend a climb of Camelback mountain. Super cool hike right in the middle of Phoenix.
2:32
Or whatever segment of the metro area they consider it.

2:32
Tacos or pizza?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Find it hard to pick between a really, really good pizza and taco ... but at the low end, it's pizza all day long.

Does Blevins longevity on the market make a reunion with the Mets more likely on a 2 year deal?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Still no indication NYM is going to give out a substantial contract to a reliever, but perhaps movement on the Bruce front would make that possible. I imagine there are a few teams circling on Blevins, Logan, and Howell, probably waiting to see who'll bite for less.

How much does a Tanaka extension cost me?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
I mean ... he could probably argue he ought to get the Strasburg deal. Basically the same age, great performance, and similarly questionable elbow health. Whether he'd take less, who knows.

In football they have the "draft pick value sheet" that was comprised so that you could gauge the relative value of picks. Are you aware of any such device for the MLB? Also is there some rule of thumb when trading rated prospects? I see the Marlins moved 3 of their top 20 to get a middling pitcher, so does that make a player like Quintana is worth 5?
Jeffrey Todd
2:36
Fangraphs has valued draft picks using expected WAR. It is very heavily tilted toward the top of the draft.
As for Top X of a given team's system, that's a very misleading way to look at things because every system is so different.
2:37
Also, valuing picks is different from valuing actual prospects -- teams have varying feelings on the real players and will value them quite a bit differently.

The Dolans have asked Antonetti to keep looking for ways to improve the club. Do you realistically see them signing anyone else? An extra bullpen arm never hurts...
Jeffrey Todd
2:39
Yeah a little depth wouldn't hurt. Could certainly argue for a quality lefty setup man, leaving Miller free to roam again. Depending upon how they feel about Brantley's progress -- really feel, not state publicly -- you could still argue for another OF.

Quintana for Dahl and Rodgers who says no white Sox or Rockies

Will mets sign Blevins
Jeffrey Todd

Well there you have it.
I mean, like I said, it's still possible. He really did have a great year and they obviously like him a lot.

Ervin Santana makes sense for a lot of teams, does he make sense to trade? What kind of expected return?
Jeffrey Todd
2:42
Yes, but they really don't seem interested. It's sort of like the Straily situation. They like him and like his contract, and need arms. So unless they're really blown away, he isn't moving (right now, at least).

I have only become familiar with fangraphs this off season. Their review of the primary prospects in the deal today were much more negative than I read in four or five other sites. Any insight you can give me into their thought process?
Jeffrey Todd
2:43
Well, they have a new prospect analyst (Longenhagen), so he's giving you his particular take. All of the prospect evaluators speak with scouts and such, of course, but they'll all have differing views. Don't expect that FG's process is all that different from other outlets.

Eddie Gamboa!

I know it's a guess, but what team do you think will end up with Quintana?
Jeffrey Todd
2:45
If he's traded this spring, I'll guess Astros.
Andrew
2:45
What contract do you see Trumbo signing? And with who?
Jeffrey Todd
2:46
Could be a one-year deal at this point, unless he just takes a lower AAV to get to 3. Rockies and Orioles seem most likely to me.

Greetings from Denmark! Are the Royals really going to pay Hosmer that much money? He had a negative WAR last year!
Jeffrey Todd
2:47
Yes! Denmark! KC definitely loves them some Hosmer, but I expect most teams would've been comfortable paying him his $13.5MM or whatever it is. When he's right, he's a quality everyday first baseman with a well-rounded game.
2:48
Helps, of course, that he's still so young and it's just a one-year commitment.
