$12 and change, actually.

What is the best current nickname in baseball?

Hosmer didn't have a negative WAR, jut not a very good one
Jeffrey Todd
2:50
Yeah I didn't look that up. But let's call it below average for a regular player.
Buddy
2:50
I still think the Cubs will add a starting pitcher before opening day. Maybe somebody like Jake Odorizzi. Your thoughts?
Jeffrey Todd
2:52
I don't disagree it's possible and certainly see the merit in adding a starter. They had amazing pitching health last year, which may not hold. Arrieta showed some warts. Lackey is getting up there and Lester is no spring chicken. Who knows if Hendricks can repeat. And Montgomery has not yet proven he can get righties out enough to start.
Casey Jones's Jose Canseco bat

Not understanding the hate commenters on MLBTR on Benitendi being the #1 prospect. Small sample last fall but the kid seems legit. Short, quick swing, great D, speed...is it because he plays in Boston?
Jeffrey Todd
2:53
He got tabbed #1 by some outlets b/c there's a premium put on the fact that he now has a MLB track record. Which is also why it doesn't really make sense to talk about him as a prospect.
You don't have to project, or wonder if he can smooth out certain aspects of his game.
But I don't think any of those folks would argue he has a higher ceiling than, say, Moncada. It's just that there are far less questions and no time to wait before he's a MLB contributor.

Hosmer plays great defense, hit 25 HR and 104 RBI, and he has a 1.0 WAR? THIS IS WHY WAR SUCKS.
Jeffrey Todd
2:55
Not really. He was an average overall hitter and has to hit a ton to have value at first base. It's not that hard to find a defensively proficient player who can slash .266/.328/.433.
Jeffrey Todd
2:56
There are different WARs?! This is why WAR sucks!
2:57
Not trying to bust on you, Bob Ferguson. Look, WAR is a general estimate. You really shouldn't focus too much on +/- 1. There's room for debate and negotiation, and nobody claims it represents a perfect statement of a player's single-year contribution, let alone their true talent level.

Hows your back feeling after last week's slip on the rug? We care about you!
Jeffrey Todd
2:57
Aww thanks! The back is much improved. But now I have some kind of pinched nerve that has left me with pain in my shoulder numbness in my fingers. WTF.

Of we were interested in Saunders and lost out wouldn't Brandon moss be a great middle between Saunders and Trumbull?
Jeffrey Todd
2:59
Man, the market for Moss has been just so quiet, hasn't it? I am a bit surprised. Not convinced yet he'll go for less than Saunders. He does seem like a classic O's signee, though. Actually metrics like him pretty well in the corner OF.

Why no Nate Jones trade rumors?
Jeffrey Todd
3:00
Guess the White Sox aren't all that interested in talking about him. Would have to figure there'd be interest.
Chris
3:01
Jennings and Austin holding out for starting roles? They'd be solid 4th OF. Or is all the goodwill gone and they're looking at ST invites?
Jeffrey Todd
3:01
No way either of those players is going to sign with promises of being a starter. Could see them ending up with minor league deals, but certainly still possible they'll get a 40-man spot and a couple mil.
Bob Ferguson
3:02
That's all true about Hosmer, but keep in mind, he's playing in a very pitcher friendly park too.
Jeffrey Todd
3:02
101 OPS+, which adjusts for park. Just sayin!
Bob Ferguson
3:03
Jeff, no worries. Bust my chops if needed. Now what about Bourjos? Will he get a major league or minor league deal?
Jeffrey Todd
3:03
Thanks Bob, I appreciate you! So you get yet another question answered ...
3:04
Bourjos seems in the same general camp as Jennings and Jackson. Could see it going either way, really. Remember, too, that some teams will coax players with MiLB pacts and promises of solid opportunities. They might just not want to give up a 40-man spot at this point.

How about Tim Raines!!! I grew up in Montreal and used to go to watch tons of Expos games in their glory years. Do you see Vlady getting in next year??
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
Very cool. Now his number will hang forever in ... Nats Park! The ring of honor there has Expos as well as old Homestead Grays players on it. Pretty awesome IMO.
And yeah Vlady will follow shortly.

No chance I land Trumbo on a 1 year deal, move Carpenter back to 3B?
Jeffrey Todd
3:06
I guess, but do they really want Trumbo?
Ryan Stevens
3:07
Orioles need a right handed hitting outfielder or do you see them trading for a left handed hitter who doesn't need a platoon like Blackmon?
Jeffrey Todd
3:07
Righty platoon type seems most likely to me since they have at least two lefty corner bats in Kim and Smith.
