I don't love the idea of thinking of an opt-out in the way of, "the guy might leave and we'll be better off for it." These are mostly premium players, so if they're valuable enough to opt out, odds are the team will wish they'd keep the money and stay.

What chance that Morrow can work out as a set-up guy for the Dodgers? Or someone else on the Farm? Sborz.
Jeffrey Todd
3:03
He totally fits their strategy, which is to throw talented guys with injury questions out there and get what you can from them, then fill in with optionable players, claimees, and (when necessary) trades.
We'll see if it works out, but hey, I like the fresh approach to dealing with arm injuries. Will be fun to see that staff sort itself out all year.

Have any big leaguers ever dropped in on any of these chats? I know many frequent the site to find out about their job security...
Jeffrey Todd

I don't know, we do get an awful lot of questions purporting to be from players.
Every now and again, I wonder.
Declare yourself, real baseball player!

Just a comment: Opt-outs are a potential disaster for the team. You lose the guy you want to keep and you're forced to pay a guy above-market salary if his production goes down. Lose-lose for the team, but win-win for the player.
Jeffrey Todd
3:05
Yeah, they are a valuable commodity to the player. Like a no-trade clause, you'd theoretically have to give up money to get one.
3:07
That's not to say that in a given situation, a team won't end up dodging a bullet b/c a guy opts out. Just like players declining qualifying offers. But as it relates to market value, except perhaps in close or unique cases, it's favorable to the player and bad for the team.

Do you see Chris Carter, or Billy Butler as a better fit for the Rays? I think Carter, what about you?
Jeffrey Todd
3:07
Sure, but he'll also cost more.

Any chance I can get an NRI somewhere?
Jeffrey Todd

I remember when your rookie card was such a hot commodity. Thanks for stopping in, man!
See? They do show up.

What do you think of the Halos positional depth? Trade indicator or functional convenience?
Jeffrey Todd
3:09
I can see how it works without any moves. But it makes even more sense if they really don't love the idea of hanging onto Cron that much.
Few more players are here ...

Do the Rockies extend me for 5/80 ?
Jeffrey Todd

That'd be a pretty big overpay, IMO.

Will Yadi be a hall of famer?
Jeffrey Todd
3:11
He'll be an interesting and tough case. I think he might need to turn in a few more good seasons to really warrant induction, but if he ends up spending his whole career with the Cards, gets a real boost from appreciation of his leadership and work behind the dish, etc, then perhaps he'll make it.

I'm about as far away as you can get! Nats finish the offseason with Weiters + blockbuster trade for a high caliber closer (Doolittle/Colome). Dreams are free right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
Possible, but I'm really not sure they have that much interest in Wieters. Trade for Doolittle seems far more likely than Colome to me. Or maybe a non-closer who's quite a good pitcher?

Who's Going To Be a Better overall player.....Long Term. Trea Turner or Corey Seager?
Jeffrey Todd
3:13
Seager seems a much easier guy to bet on.

Speaking of opt-outs... if the Tigers really are looking to shed payroll, best case scenario for them is that Upton has an MVP-like season then opts-out, right?
Jeffrey Todd
3:14
Perhaps. Team prerogatives can also change the calculus.
Few more and I'll have to hang up ...

Speaking of Harper......Does he rebound in '17? He'll never get $400 million if he doesn't, right?
