My Phillies are done right?  Rotation is a mess, bullpen is crumbling, and we get nothing from our 5-9 hitters.
Mark P
9:09
Things are looking pretty rough for the Phillies.  It's too early to write them off, of course, but it might be harder to see them win the divi....

Did you that L today. Worst loss of the yr maybe last 5 yrs during regular season. Injuries have killed us. Hopefully we can stay close until the end. Where do we put Soler next yr? Move Kelenic

What kind of changes are likely in ATL next year (assuming Fried/Duvall/Laureano are gone and RAJ isn’t ready for opening day)? AA isn’t just going to run it back with the same guys is he?

Braves finished ?

What in the world is going on in Atlanta? Seems like a major implosion
Mark P
9:10
....sion?  Well, the Phillies might take the East after all, unless the Mets make a run.

Beyond the usual "it's a long season" stuff, I'd say the Braves should be the more worried of the two NL East clubs because of the injuries.  They've lost enough key personnel that it is really starting to catch up to them, whereas I have more faith that the Phils (if they can healthy) can just get back on track at some point.

Does Santander reject a QO and do the Orioles pick up O'Hearn's 2025 option?
Mark P
9:13
Yes and yes
9:14
Looking up O'Hearn's club option, it's $7.5MM (worth maybe up to $8.5MM based on playing time incentives).  That is easily worth it for a player who has been so productive since coming to Baltimore.  Santander's likely departure makes it even more of a lock to retain O'Hearn.

Are you saying that Soto joining the Jays would be your favo(u)rite landing spot because of your affinity for the Jays, or that you view them as a legitimate favo(u)rite to land him as a free agent?  Or both!
Mark P
9:16
Because they're my team.  As much of an all-in year as 2025 might be for the Blue Jays, I find it hard to believe that they'd meet Soto's asking price, or that Soto would join the Jays when more clear-cut contending teams will be willing to meet his price

Who makes the playoffs again first, Nats or Angels?
Mark P
9:17
It occurs to me that I'm pushing it with the polls this chat, and besides, I think the answer here is pretty clear....Washington

Dodgers signing Adames make sense?
Mark P
9:19
Absolutely.  If Lux keeps hitting the rest of the way and the Dodgers become sold on him as a regular going forward, they might opt to keep him at 2B and stick with another glove-first option at shortstop.  But, since it's the Dodgers, can't rule out another big acquisition.

What are the chances the other expansion team besides Nashville ends up in the PNW. Mariners have to travel A LOT, and that impacts things over a season
Mark P
9:20
Portland is surely on MLB's short list for expansion destinations, though perhaps not in the top tier

Does Snit get fired after this season?
Mark P
9:22
Doubt it.  Not his fault so many key players got hurt.

The only thing the rangers should be playing for now is the lottery
Mark P
9:24
Yeah, it just doesn't seem like it's happening for the Rangers this year.  With a lot of money coming off the books this offseason, however, they've got some flexibility to reload for 2025
Lot of questions to be answered in the pitching staff, however

Can the Cubs move Happ, even with his NTC?  Seems to me, that Pittsburgh ( hometown) or Cincinnati ( hits like like a monster there), both would be very interested.
Mark P
9:27
Trading Happ within the division seems like a non-starter.  Trading him altogether isn't out of the question, since like I mentioned earlier, the Cubs might be more bold in shaking up the team

Alonso a Met next year?
Mark P
9:31
He's been good but not great this season, to the point that I think he'll run into some problems trying to land a mega-deal.  If I had to pick a major name for the Boras special of a shorter-term contract with opt-outs involved, Alonso would be my choice of the 2024-25 free agent class.

To this end, perhaps the Mets see this as an opportunity to bring back a fan favorite at a relative discount.  Or, maybe the Mets first take a run at Juan Soto as their big splurge of the winter before falling back on plan B options like Alonso.
Kate Upton
9:32
What do you see Verlander doing in the offseason?  One year deal?
Mark P
9:33
Probably, or a one-year guarantee with some kind of vesting option for 2026.  Re-signing with Houston seems like the most logical destination.

"Dog Days Are Over" by Florence & the Machine.

An ironic song to be up during the dog days of August

I just saw my first game at Target Field on Saturday. What is your favorite park to see a game live? What park haven't you been to that you most want to visit?
Mark P
9:34
PNC Park is my favourite stadium I've ever visited, and Dodger Stadium is atop my bucket list of ballparks I've yet to visit.

9:35
Do you see the Yankees bringing back Holmes next year or go with Luis Gil as the closer?
Mark P
9:35
Don't see Gil being moved to closer since he still has obvious utility as a starting pitcher.  Holmes is a 50-50 option to return, in my view

Reds management blew their chance.  What say you?
Mark P
9:37
If the Reds had swung some big trade or made some big signing last winter, I'm not sure it would've been enough to overcome almost their entire position player core (except Elly) getting hurt or playing poorly.

When is Caminero coming up?
Mark P

Could be any day now, and if anything, I'm a little surprised he still isn't up now that Paredes is gone
