Oh, and I'm just assuming they'll pick up Ozuna's club option, thus locking up the DH spot

Mark: Good evening. Do the Marlins acquiesce to their fan base and spend money on free agency? They may be much more competence next year.
Mark P
7:39
The Marlins won't be seriously spending for a long while, or even ever if their plan is to completely emulate the Rays

Will Framber set the record for no-hitters before he's done?
Mark P
7:41
He'd have to throw SIX more no-hitters just to tie Nolan Ryan's record.  Nobody's breaking that record.

Do you really think Soto re-signs with the Yankees (assuming money isn't an issue)? If I were him, their overreliance on 32 year old Judge would give me pause
Mark P
7:43
If you're ever going to "over-rely" on someone, it would be a player posting video game numbers like Judge.  From Soto's perspective, pairing with Judge makes the Yankees' lineup dangerous just between the two of them, and that's not counting what they might get in the future from Stanton, Wells, Volpe, Dominguez, or any other new faces
One would assume that if the Yankees are willing to meet the market price, Soto would be more than happy to stay in the pinstripes.

Tigers?????
Mark P
7:45
Look at those Tigers, quietly sneaking back over the .500 mark and getting themselves on the outskirts of the playoff race.  It would be fun if Detroit kept it going and spiced up both the wild card and AL Central races in September.

If you were the Mets GM this winter would you go "all in" on Soto and not much else or spread the resources around between starting pitching, resigning Alonso, and maybe a bat like Santander?
Mark P
7:49
The Mets have enough money coming off the books that they can sign Soto to a record deal and still spend on other upgrades.

If they don't land Soto, I do wonder if the team might go in the other direction to some extent and try to get under the luxury tax threshold to reset their tax status for the 2025-26 offseason.  This doesn't mean the Mets wouldn't still be spending big this winter, as they have enough space under the tax threshold to spread around their money (as you suggest) on multiple players

Why do the Astros have more no hitters (by double) then any one over the last 5 years?
Mark P
7:50
Their pitching has been really good over the last five years
7:51
I wish I had a more complex answer, but that's basically the best reason, along with the fact that no-hitters are pretty random

Will Henry Davis be able to put it together and hit in the majors?
Mark P
7:53
Davis has had less than 400 career PA in the majors, and his continued success at Triple-A indicates that he hasn't forgotten how to hit.  I do think the Pirates need to pick a lane about his defensive future, since it just adds to Davis' mental workload that he's had to juggle multiple positions while also learning how to hit big league pitching

Best deadline deal so far?
Mark P
7:54
As much as the Astros were criticized for overpaying for Kikuchi, he's been lights out in Houston.

Kopech has also been a huge help to the Dodgers bullpen.

Any chance the Tigers  move on from Baez this winter and bring Adames back where he started
Mark P
7:57
This would be a fun way for Detroit to announce that they're officially in go-for-it mode again, though obviously, the Baez contract is a stark reminder of how those kinds of signings can go awry.

It's probably more likely that Adames signs with a team that is more clearly planning to spend, but if the Tigers decide to up payroll, they'd make a lot of sense as Adames' landing spot

Next pitcher to 300 wins is.....?                                                Next batter to 500 HRs?
Mark P
8:01
Verlander has 260, Scherzer has 216, Kershaw has 212, and then there's a big dropoff to Gerrit Cole at 150 wins among active pitchers.  Given how the game has changed, Verlander might be the last guy (if he even gets there) to hit the 300-win plateau for a long, long time.

As for 500 homers, Stanton is at 425, so he should be there before the end of his Yankees contract if he can get reasonably healthy.

What could the A's get for JP Sears in an offseason trade?
Mark P
8:04
Sears is controlled through the 2028 season, and he's been unspectacular but pretty decent (and durable) over two full MLB seasons.  All that remaining control means there isn't any reason the A's need to move him anytime soon, plus Sears is the kind of low-strikeout pitcher that a lot of teams don't rate as a high priority

Joe Espada probably won’t win AL Manager of the Year, but he needs to be in the conversation right?
Mark P
8:06
My take on the Astros all season has been "they're fine, they'll figure it out," but Espada certainly deserves credit as a rookie manager keeping things steady over those rocky first couple of months

What kind if changes do you expect your Jays to make after a season in which they disappointed?
Mark P
8:09
I suspect Atkins gets another season to turn things around.  Schneider or some coaches could be on the way out, but I'm not sure what kind of top-tier manager you could hire given the "last dance" situation the Blue Jays seem to be facing in 2025.  Managers with job options might prefer a team with a more clear-cut long-term plan.

Are Cards committed to playing Jordan Walker everyday the rest of the way.  They have started him against righties this weekend.
Mark P

Yep, Marmol said yesterday that Walker is getting everyday at-bats in September

Where would you set the over/under for Paul Skenes career no-hitters?
Mark P
8:11
Under.  It's really hard to throw a no-hitter, and a good deal of luck needs to be involved.  There are plenty of pitchers in Cooperstown who never tossed a no-no.
8:12
Wait, I realized I didn't actually answer that question, haha.  0.5

should AJ negotiate a long term deal with Jackon Merrill ASAP?
Mark P
8:15
San Diego still has a lot of long-term money on the books, and it remains to be seen exactly where the payroll might end up landing, or if more cuts could be made.  To this end, Merrill not even being arb-eligible until 2027 is a big help to the Padres' bottom line.

But, for a team that has been aggressive about locking up core players to extensions, Merrill seems like a no-brainer for such an offer.  His success this season means the Padres won't be getting much of a bargain, but it's still some explorations
