Will the White Sox break the mlb record for losses?
Mark P
8:19
120 losses is the modern record, and the White Sox are already up to 107 on September 1st.  The 1962 Mets are soon going to be off the hook.

Who was hit the hardest by the injury bug?  O's, Dodgers, someone else?
Mark P
8:21
Baltimore and LA are still comfortably on track to make the playoffs.  The real answer is probably a team like Texas or Cincinnati, who got hit hard by injuries and never recovered.
Giants fan
8:22
Is this organization really penny pinching?
Mark P
8:22
They spent over $300MM on free agents last winter and are paying the luxury tax.  Unwillingness to spend isn't among the Giants' problems.

The Tigers honored the 84 team Saturday, Do you remember the 84 season ? The Blue Jays were the main team to challenge Detroit that season,
Mark P
8:23
1984 was my age-2 season, so my memories are pretty vague.  :)

8:24
With the team falling apart the last month, do the Pirates reconsider Derek Shelton and Ben Cherington's future with the team?
Mark P
8:25
Cherington isn't going anywhere, as the team is only starting to see the end results of the rebuild.  Shelton's job would probably only be in jeopardy if the front office or ownership didn't think the young players were developing in the right way at the MLB level, which might be a fair argument given how this season has gone.
MVPs
8:28
Who wins this year?
Mark P
8:29
I'd be surprised if it isn't Judge and Ohtani.  With respect to Witt and Lindor, their great seasons aren't quite at the same level of what Judge/Ohtani are doing.

Do the Braves pick up d’Arnaud’s option?
Mark P
8:30
Probably.  D'Arnaud would make $8MM if the option is picked up, and Atlanta clearly values what he brings the table as a backup/part-time catcher.  This season also showed how valuable d'Arnaud can be in the event that Murphy is injured or struggles

Should Jerry Dipoto be looking for a new job?
Mark P
8:33
Servais' firing is a big enough of shakeup that it probably won't be followed by Dipoto also leaving, but it's certainly a big "on notice" sign from ownership.

It's difficult since a lot of Dipoto's moves have made sense on paper, yet no matter what bats are brought in, it seems like everyone has trouble hitting in Seattle.  The home/road splits are pretty even, so you can't just blame it on the ballpark or the marine layer suppressing offense.
Os fan
8:35
Do you think it’s likely the Os will have 4 of the top 40 draft picks next year? (Regular 1st rd pick, Cowser PPI for ROY, and Comp A picks for Burnes & Santander getting 50+Mil elsewhere).
Mark P
8:36
It's feasible, and don't forget that the Orioles also have another bonus pick via their annual Competitive Balance Round selection.

The O's traded their 2024 CBR pick to the Brewers as part of the Burnes trade.  If your scenario of a four-pick bounty comes true, I could see the Orioles moving their 2025 CBR pick for another win-now player.
8:37
As loath as teams are to move draft picks, the Orioles are well positioned to take advantage of the CBR picks to help bolster their team.

I’m I the only one who thinks the Pirates should trade Cruz for a haul?
Mark P
8:39
Cruz has enough question marks that I can see your logic, but it would also be a real kick to the Pirates' rebuild if they dealt him and he fully broke out as a star elsewhere.  Fwiw, I don't think Cruz is in any danger of being traded, and this position shift to center field is a sign of how the Bucs value him as a long-term piece.

Have the Guards stabilized their rotation with Cobb and Boyd? Is it good enough now to win the division?
Mark P
8:41
I'm not exactly sold on the rotation as
8:42
championship-level, but your use of "stabilized" is the right word.  The Guards only need decent starting pitching to be dangerous as long as the bullpen continues to be lights-out, and if the lineup can get hitting again
Robbie Baseball
8:42
Which of the Jays young guys (Horowitz, Clement, Wagner, etc) do you think will play a significant role in 2025?
Mark P
8:44
Somewhat depends on what other players are brought in, or if something seismic like a Bichette trade happens.

Since so many of the younger guys are infielders, the Blue Jays might try to juggle everyone around the 2B/3B jobs somewhat in the fashion of this season, and then add a new everyday outfielder as a big bat.  They could try to replicate the IKF signing by bringing a more experienced veteran to the infield mix, and it would be amusing if they just tried to re-acquire IKF from Pittsburgh.

8:45
You pick Ohtani as a leading MVP candidate. Granted, he has great numbers, but he's a DH -- not having to deal with the daily rigors of playing the field. Is this going to factor in the vote? I think it should...
Mark P
8:46
It's a fair point, and Lindor's strong glovework is a big argument in his favor.

However, I have trouble believing that anyone could have a 50-50 season for a playoff team and "not" win the MVP.
Chris
8:48
Oh hai Mark, does Profar get a multi year deal this offseason?
Mark P
8:49
I probably should've factored this into the earlier discussion about a Jackson Merrill extension.  The Padres won't have much left to spend on Merrill once Preller gives Profar a $400MM contract.

In all seriousness, though, Profar will definitely be landing multiple years this time around.
Cubs Fan In Twin's Country
8:50
With the talk of the Cubs going after a catcher in the off-season, do you see them going the Michael Busch route and trade for a prospect blocked at the MLB level (Drake Baldwin)?
Mark P
8:51
While the Cubs will certainly still explore the catching market, Amaya's offense over the last couple of months might make the team's catching need a little less glaring than it once seemed.  The Cubs could now be looking at a veteran to share the workload with Amaya, rather than a new catching corps altogether.

i know it’s a lot to ask, but can a healthy Twins offense carry them to a World Series appearance?
Mark P
8:53
It's a cliche, but anything can happen once a team gets into the playoffs.  If everyone is healthy and clicking at the same time, Minnesota has as much of a chance as anyone.

8:54
Do the Dodgers fire their training staff or just point to bad luck for all the injuries?
Mark P
8:55
I seem to recall that LA fired their head trainer a few years ago, but the constant string of injuries has just kept coming.  Surely the club is taking every measure to evaluate why this is happening, and it isn't just bad luck that the Dodgers seem to be heading into October every year with a patchwork pitching staff.

Are the Astros for real?
Mark P
8:56
Yup.  Nobody should be surprised if this season ends with another Astros championship.
