Will the Red Sox contend in 2025?
Mark P
8:06
Yes.  They're on the outskirts of contention now even without much pitching or defense to speak of, so they're not that far away
Second career

Lots of big leaguers make the switch to broadcasting when their playing days are over but what current player stands out the most as a guy that’s definitely going to manage a ball club one day?
Mark P
8:07
Seems about half the catchers in the sport are considered "managers of the future"

8:08
Is Herrera traded this offseason?  I could see a team like Miami being a great trade partner.
Mark P
8:08
Herrera has seemed like a logical trade candidate for a while now, yet it seems like St. Louis enjoys having depth and the flexibility to use Contreras at DH
Blue Jays
8:09
does Bichette have any trade value after an underwhelming/lost year?  Are there any other change of scenery candidates you could see a match with?
Mark P
8:12
He has plenty of trade value.  Lots of teams undoubtedly see him as a bounce-back candidate, and even for just a one-year splurge, the Jays would certainly get interest if Bichette was shopped.

I don't know about specific one-for-one trades or possible trade packages on the table, but one team I could see making a play is Milwaukee.  Adames is leaving, the Crew want to still contend, so they acquire Bichette for a year with the idea that he'd have a great season and net the Brewers a QO pick the next winter.  Joey Ortiz then stays at third base for another year.

Danny Jansen struggling in Boston. Does a return to a Toronto make sense?
Mark P
8:13
Since the Jays need a backup anyway and they shouldn't feel comfortable with Kirk as a full-time catcher, sure, it's possible.  The catching market is thin enough that Jansen should still be able to find a more clear-cut starting job elsewhere, however, despite his struggles.

Give a Twins fan some hope for this year or next
Mark P
8:14
Slumps happen.  As shaky as the Twins have looked in the last few weeks, they've still got hold of a wild card spot and their challengers all have their own problems.
Beads?!?

Beads?!?

I have asked this question a number of times. What is your opinion of Ruben Amaro, Jr? He was a good GM. The he became a first base coach, and now an announcer. Is this by his choice, or by the choice of the other front offices?
Mark P
8:19
While this trend seems to be slightly changing in the cases of guys like Chris Young, Craig Breslow, or Chris Getz, most executive hires in recent years have been non-players or people without any direct on-field experience in baseball.  That probably contributed to Amaro's career path, which is pretty unique.

As a GM, I can understand why he was fired, but he wasn't bad as some Philly fans might think.  The team almost won another title during his tenure, after all, though Amaro kept throwing too much money at trying to sustain the core rather than building from within.
Roki Sasaki
8:21
If I'm somehow allowed to leave for MLB this off-season, who would be my most likely suitors? Can I reasonably expect to surpass Yamamoto's monster deal?
Mark P
8:21
No, because Sasaki is under 25 years old, and thus would be considered an international bonus pool free agent.
8:22
So he could only sign for maybe a couple of million bucks, or for however much open money a team might have available in its bonus pool.  It would be similar to when Ohtani came to the majors, rather than Yamamoto

Considering that you will be hosting the pod cast next week. Will we be able to hear you say the bees/beads question and answer, or is it reserved for the chats only?
Mark P
8:23
This question made me laugh out loud.  I might have to work on my Will Arnett impression.
AA
8:23
Could I get Bichette for Schwellenbach or Elder and Arcia?
Mark P
8:25
I dunno if any tension exists between AA and the Jays front office, but I kinda doubt Bichette is moved to Atlanta (if anywhere)
Norm

If the Padres miss the playoffs, do they tear it down?
Mark P
8:28
I stated earlier that Preller could be on the hot seat if the Padres missed the playoffs, though he is under contract through 2026.  It's possible they've shown enough improvement that a near-miss wouldn't automatically mean Preller is out.

It remains to be seen how ownership will proceed in the post-Seidler era, or if any more payroll cuts at coming.  Last offseason's spending reduction might be seen as "good enough," and there's probably some consideration given to the fact that having a fire sale would erase a lot of the goodwill generated amidst the fanbase in the last few years.

Am I the only one that thinks Framber Valdez is the nastiest pitcher in the majors?
Mark P
8:31
He's underrated enough that he's not even mentioned in "most underrated player in baseball" discussions.  Valdez isn't exactly low profile as a star pitcher on a borderline dynasty team, yet even still

Do you think the Red Sox would like a do over on the Danny Jansen trade with him posting negative defensive metrics (Reese McGuire posted positives) and his offense is equal or worse than what McGuire posted?
Mark P
8:33
Feels like the Jansen pickup was something of a dress rehearsal for how the Red Sox will operate when Teel is called up next year.  Adding Jansen was also about finding a reason to shuffle Wong around the diamond, which is likely what'll happen next year when Teel is up and is a primary catcher
Kevin
8:33
Do you see the Cubs making any majors moves this Off-season?
Mark P
8:34
Most definitely.  They'll have a lot of money coming off the books and they're getting increasingly desperate to win again.
Chicago should be "in on" just about every big free agent, and I think they'll make at least one big signing
Armchair GM
8:37
Do the Astros go on a drought of playoff appearances after this season?
Mark P
8:37
I think we've all learned by now to not count out the Astros
Tom
8:38
Do the Phillies add a starter and someone for the bullpen
Mark P
8:40
Wheeler/Nola/Suarez/Sanchez are already set for the rotation, so the question will be if Walker is back as the fifth starter, or if the Phillies look within to the Painter/Abel/etc. prospect group, or add another veteran arm to give the kids more time to develop.  Knowing Dave Dombrowski, the latter might be a bit more likely, though moving Walker's contract in a trade could be tricky.

Do Verlander, Scherzer and Degrom rebound in 2025
Mark P
8:43
Just based on age and injury history alone, there's a very good chance all three have rough seasons, It seems nearly impossible that all three would defy Father Time and have good seasons.

It might mean by what you define as "rebound."  Staying healthy obviously qualifies, but if any of this trio pitched, say, 140-150 innings of 4.10 ERA baseball, does that count as being back even if that's well below the ace standards we expect from those guys?

Is Marmol on the hot seat if the Cardinals don't make the playoffs?
Mark P
8:45
I was on record as being surprised by Marmol's contract extension when it happened, and the decision is still a head-scratcher given how this season has played out.
