Will Dan Wilson stay in the Mariner manager seat in 2025?
Mark P
8:46
Wilson wasn't called an "interim" manager when he got the job, so I'd presume he's staying

Biggest need for the Braves going into next year? Seem like we lack tons of depth at the majors and minors levels
Mark P
8:49
The roster-building strategy seems to be find stars, have them play basically every day, and then in the event of injury the front office can always find stopgap veterans available who'd love to play for a contender.  The Braves are obviously hanging in there and might well make the playoffs (or make a playoff run) anyway, but this season's results could get Anthopoulos wondering if some more regular depth is necessary.

Do the Yankees address the obvious need for closer this off season? Anyone worth signing not named Holmes?
Mark P
8:53
Kenley Jansen, Carlos Estevez, Tanner Scott, Kirby Yates, Craig Kimbrel, and Paul Sewald, are some of the experienced closers on the market.  The Yankees may not view any of them as true upgrades over Holmes, and of course Holmes himself if a free agent who could be re-signed.

I could see the Yankees not directly replace Holmes, but perhaps add a few bullpen pieces and let a competition develop.  Or, have a situational bullpen rather than a set closer.

Chances that Will Smith (RP) wins his 4th consecutive ring this year?
Mark P
8:55
I mean, if the Royals actually did go from 106 losses to a title, would we have to start thinking Will Smith is some kind of wizard?  Would we have to rewrite the power rankings and put him on top, as a human guarantee of a championship?

Why did the Giants extend Chapman?
Mark P
8:57
He's had a good season, and he might be one of the rare star players who actively looked to play in the Bay Area.
8:58
Chapman seemed to be the one top-tier free agent most likely to just stick with his current team. Having it come in the form of an extension to avoid free agency altogether isn't even a surprise, since Chapman probably can't have enjoyed his time in the market last winter.

Do you think the Orioles can do well in the playoffs even with all their Injuries?
Mark P
8:59
Absolutely.  Any team can gets hot for a month can win.

Should the Nats bring Scherzer back on a one-year deal as equal parts nostalgia move, mentoring for all their young pitchers, and to make sure he retires as a National?
Mark P
9:01
That would be a fun idea, though I suspect Scherzer wants to join a team that has a better chance of winning in 2025.

Now, if the Nats signed Soto and THEN approached Scherzer about a contract....
Ha-Seong Kim
9:02
What should i do this offseason? I love SD, but can probably get more elsewhere.
Mark P
9:05
Returning to the topic of the Padres' payroll, they might have enough money on the books already that re-signing Kim just isn't feasible.  Kim is having a decent but not great platform season, yet accepting a QO doesn't seem likely.

Another commenter floated the idea of the Tigers going after Kim, which would be interesting.  Kim would somewhat the re-adopt the super-sub role, though he'd obviously mostly play shortstop since Baez doesn't seem like a viable Major League player any longer.
And since we linked the Dodgers to Adames earlier, Kim also makes a lot of sense as LA's backup plan

Has there ever been a worse value for money contract given to a pitcher than Patrick Corbin’s? I get it that he helped them win a world series in his first year, but that doesn’t make up for his godawful stats since then. And you can’t even blame it on injuries since he’s been healthy the whole time.
Mark P
9:07
As Washington fans are undoubtedly quick to point out, Corbin isn't even the least-successful pitching contract in Nationals history -- Stephen Strasburg's second mega-deal immediately leaps to mind.

Odds Verlander retires? This year sure felt like his “one year too many” year
Mark P
9:08
Verlander is obviously a very competitive guy who wants to go out on his own terms.  But, if Houston won the World Series again, I wonder if he'd see that as a perfect exit.
Tony Gonsolin
9:09
Do the Dodgers trade me or move me to the pen this offseason?
Mark P
9:10
No reason why Gonsolin wouldn't get another shot at a starter.  Teams always need rotation help, the Dodgers especially.

9:11
Why are the Rockies always so bad?
Mark P
9:15
Given how Coors Field impacts pitchers, a lot has to break right for the Rockies to be competitive.  It has been done at certain times in the franchise's history (the 2007 Rocktober team, and they did make the playoffs in both 2017-18), but there's been basically no sustained success over the Rockies' history.  Those three seasons I mentioned were three of the only nine winning years Colorado has ever had.

It doesn't help that ownership and the front office operate in such an insular fashion.  There's something to be said for having a unique vision apart from the groupthink that can populate a lot of MLB front offices, yet it's pretty clear that the Rockies' approach is too closed off to a lot of common-sense realities that most teams deploy.

9:16
What would MLB do if the A's make the playoffs while in Sacramento?
Mark P
9:17
I somehow don't think this issue will come up, but they'd make it work.  The game is probably sold as the Athletics' "unique home field advantage."

Shoutout to another MLBTR Front Office piece this past week, which looked at how despite all of the Athletics' turmoil off the field, the front office is quietly putting together a really interesting group of position players.

9:19
The Nationals are a bottom of the barrel team according to their record, but somehow I found the season to be exciting and the team to be dynamic.  Am I wearing rose colored glasses or did the pitching, hitting, and fielding improve and impress this season? I feel the Nats had some real electrifying games this year
Mark P
9:20
The Nats are putting a nice core together, and fans have to like what Wood and Crews have already done in their short time in the big leagues.  It might not be in 2025, but success feels like it's not far around the corner for the Nationals.

Why can't the Marlins ever do anything right?
Mark P
9:20
Connor Norby appears to be the next Mike Schmidt, so they've got that going for them

9:21
Think Jobe breaks camp with the tigers next year?
Mark P
9:22
Probably more likely that he starts the year in Triple-A, but it probably won't be long until he's in the majors
9:23
We've hit the two-hour mark, so let's wrap things up.  Thanks to everyone for all the questions!
