I'm working on their camp battles post right now and ... well, there are so many players and considerations that I can't answer that here. It'll probably go up tomorrow.

Surprised that Villar is betting on himself? He's 4 seasons away from free agency, so 20M after one good year had to be at least a little tempting.
Jeffrey Todd
2:22
Yeah, it takes some stones to turn down life-changing money when it's available. But all these guys have different family considerations, willingness to take risk, etc. Certainly, with just one year to go til arb eligibility, that would've looked like a pretty team-friendly price tag.
2:23
By "yeah" I didn't mean to suggest he just should have taken the money, to be clear. Despite the risks, I would be inclined to value him somewhat higher than that. Just saw $30MM for Inciarte, Herrera, for instance, and you could argue they are similarly situated players. (Villar was pretty good in 2015, though didn't play a lot.)

Do you know how an assignment to extended Spring Training once camp breaks works with the player's service time? I am thinking about the Dodgers' suggested proposal with Urias. Does that count as an option for that player?
Jeffrey Todd
2:24
If not injury related, the player would have to be optioned. Not that the Dodgers are worried about Urias burning up options.

2:25
Is Huston Street done? How much money would the Angels eat in a trade?
Jeffrey Todd
2:25
Right now? Most of it, probably. Not sure he'd have landed more than a token amount in free agency.
2:26
LOL
@Sullivan_Ranger
Rougned Odor on contract talks: "I don't know anything. My dad called me about it. I said I don't know but thank you for calling."
Yaakov
2:26
Why are there no talks of the mets extending a pitcher? They have a lot of money coming off the books. Why not spend some of that money and gaurentee to have these pitchers long term?
Jeffrey Todd
2:26
deGrom still makes the most sense to me, but they've said they aren't really pursuing any SP deals.
AJ
2:27
Do teams really not want to take a flier on Derek Norris? Was a pretty good bat as recent as 2015
Jeffrey Todd
2:28
That's all the Nats did -- didn't give much up to get him. But the real issue with him offensively isn't just the slash line, it's that his K/BB numbers fell off a cliff. Used to be like 12% walk rate and fell to ... I forget, but like half that. Pretty unusual.

Jeff Todd- What do the Sox do now that trade talks seem to have stalled.
Jeffrey Todd
2:29
Wait and see. If Kimbrel can be traded on the eve of Opening Day, so can Robertson. A well-timed injury could put Frazier or Melky in demand. And then there's always the deadline. They don't have to slash salary, so patience makes sense I think.
Yaakov
2:29
What do you think of this whole Betances or deal? Did the Yankees go too far or Betances or both?
Jeffrey Todd
2:30
It's silly b/c of how it's been misframed. The question isn't whether it was insulting for either side to pick their number and try to argue it. Why would it be? It's a business proposition.
2:31
I have no idea why Levine approached it in that regard. It's one thing to say the agents misled him -- probably not a great thing to say publicly, but I guess you could reasonably argue that. But why throw shade at Betances himself? Guy works hard and throws a ton of innings for them.
2:32
Also, while it was a stretch for them to seek the $5MM, you can see the reasoning. Everyone understands the saves are contextual and that he's an outstanding reliever. Arguing for a panel to value him that way ... if he was on board and understood the risks ... I guess go for it.
Eric Gagne
2:32
How much would you feel comfortable wagering on a bet that I make another MLB appearance?
Jeffrey Todd
2:32
Depends if he signs with the Padres or not.
Christian Arroyo
2:32
Say I blow everyone out of the water in Spring, any chance I'm on the opening day? Or am I due for more seasoning regardless?
Jeffrey Todd

Angel Pagan makes sense going back to the Giants as a backup, doesn't he?
Jeffrey Todd
2:33
Doesn't seem crazy to me. Not sure how much they'd pay him but they'd be committing like 1.5 or 2 mil for any of the veterans they brought in on minors deals anyway.
Really depends how they view Parker/Williamson, which is hard to read.
Julio Urias
2:34
I don't want to go to extended spring training.
Jeffrey Todd

Then enjoy being grilled like a Strasburger in September.
I can't believe I just wrote that, but there it is. No takebacks on the chat.

Are you surprised that I'm gunna be batting leadoff to start the year?

What happened with the chat on Tuesday?
Jeffrey Todd
2:35
Steve was out of town. He sends his apologies, I'm sure.
2:36
It's hard to give notice, really -- if we put it on twitter, not everyone would see it. If we put it on the site, people would probably complain. We are trying to be here every day on schedule.
(Er, Tues/Wed/Thurs on schedule, not every day.)
Mike
2:37
Any chance of Betances to the Nats to close?
Jeffrey Todd
2:37
Not really. Would take a huge haul.
CMARIN
2:37
Who do you see winning the 2B job for KC this year?
Jeffrey Todd
2:38
I picked Merrifield in the "camp battles" post. He seems to have the best all-around game. If he's really an above-average defender and baserunner who can post nearly average batting numbers, that's certainly a solid enough player.
