Suppose I'm an owner and I sign Sasaki.  He's limited to a minor-league deal, which can then be "selected" to the big-league club, and any bonus would be limited by your international bonus pool, right?

What then prevents me from doing a Chourio and immediately giving him an extension for, say, 8 years (buying his arb years and a couple fo free agent years)?
Mark P
7:33
The league would immediately step in and veto that deal, viewing it as a clear end-around of the bonus pool rules.

To use Ohtani as an example, his first "bigger money" deal with the Angels didn't come until his first arb-eligible year, when he signed a two-year, $8.5MM extension.  Heading into his final arb year, he then agreed to a one-year, $30MM deal.  Nobody raised any ire about that since by that time, Ohtani had already been in the majors for years.

Could the Cubs trade Parades to open up 3B for Shaw...get a starter from say...Seattle?
Mark P
7:34
Nico's injury might well open up 2B for Shaw, at least for part of the season.  My guess is that the Cubs grew Paredes as a longer-term answer, and wouldn't flip him unless a really good offer emerges.

What’s your feeling for what the Royals will do?
Mark P
7:35
Bring in a big outfield bat.  Related to that earlier question, the type of signing that you wouldn't normally think would be in KC's price range. Like, if the Royals ended up with Santander or something.

BEE?! Gees
Mark P
7:35
I cannot believe I missed the obvious lay-up of a joke in not referring to them as the Bead Gees.  I am legitimately angry with myself.
7:36
And even there I wrote 'believe' instead of beadlieve!  I'm losing it in my old age.

7:37
Should I take Bregman's willingness to play second as a signal that he's not coming back to Houston?
Mark P
7:38
That report struck me as interesting, since you'd think after winning a Gold Glove, Bregman would be entrenched at the hot corner.  But, offering more versatility isn't a bad thing, and I have no doubt Bregman would be able to handle 2B easily from a defensive perspective

Would Casas & Abreu be enough to get in the conversation for Crochet Gilbert/Kirby if they are available?
Mark P
7:39
Casas for Crochet straight up might even be something the White Sox would be interested in, no Abreu required.

After picking up Ryan O'Hearn's option and with Coby Mayo looking for increased playing time, could the Orioles look to move Mountcastle for a solid reliever or controllable starter?
Mark P
7:41
As a Jays fan, I admit I'd like any scenario that sees Mountcastle leave the AL East, since he suddenly turns into Jimmie Foxx whenever he faces Jays pitching.  :)

Dealing Mountcastle definitely seems doable, and the O's can find a market amongst teams that miss out on Alonso or Christian Walker (or don't trade for, say, Josh Naylor)

Why is Sasaki willing to lose millions of $ by being posted at age 23 ? What is the logic ?
Mark P
7:43
It's a major "bet on himself" move, no question.  But while Sasaki is leaving a lot of money on the table, he'll make a big chunk of it back in endorsement money even if his MLB salary is initially quite low.  Also, he might be concerned about picking up an injury in NPB in the next two years, which would've sent him into the posting market as somewhat damaged goods.

7:44
I know Contreras is probably moving to first, but would an Andrew Vaughn for Nolan Gorman swap work?
Mark P
7:45
Gorman has more upside at the MLB level than Vaughn, so that deal doesn't make much sense for St. Louis
Ethan Salas
7:45
Any chance i get a call-in late August if the Padres are relevant?
Mark P
7:46
Salas doesn't even turn 19 until June, and he struggled at A+ ball last season.  He's not getting to the Show until 2026 at the earliest, notwithstanding how the Padres can sometimes be aggressive in promoting prospects
Baseball question
7:47
What’s the record for players involved in the same trade? Is it the Blue Jays/Marlins trade from a while ago?
Mark P
7:48
The Orioles and Yankees had something like a 17-player trade back in the 50's.  New York got Don Larsen and Bob Turley in the deal, as a quick google search reveals

Will keep asking until I'm answered.  What would it cost the Mets to acquire Crochet?
Mark P
7:49
I addressed this in a post just yesterday, based on reports of the Mets' interest in Crochet

How likely is it that the Pirates trade pitching depth for a first baseman and if so who is a likely trade partner?
Mark P
7:52
The Bucs were in on Josh Naylor last winter, but trading a notable pitching prospect for two years of Naylor was more enticing than trading someone for just one season.  Especially since it would seem unlikely that Naylor would re-sign to stay in Pittsburgh.

I guess the Pirates might view such a trade as a young pitcher for Naylor "and" the QO-tied compensatory draft pick they'd get if and when he signed elsewhere next offseason.  But, the Guardians also clearly would factor such a pick themselves into the equation if they want to just keep Naylor

7:56
Blue Jays have a ton of young lefties (Horwitz, Wagner, Loperfido, Barger, Roden) and there isn’t playing time for all of them. Who is the best match in a trade for pre-arb pitching?
Mark P
7:57
The idea of the Jays suddenly having "too many" left-handed hitters seems odd, given how they've been so tilted to the right in recent years.  On paper it's a surplus, but keep in mind that only a couple of these guys have showed anything at the MLB level to date.

7:58
Padres chances of getting Roki Sasaki?
Mark P
7:58
Most people view them as one of the top contenders, perhaps the #2 choice after the Dodgers.
ZackDel
7:58
Do the rangers sign high end bullpen arms or try to trade for a Devin williams type player
Mark P
7:59
A trade seems more likely given how Texas might not have a ton available to spend.
8:01
Now, the Rangers have close to $80MM between their committed salaries and the luxury tax threshold, so it's not like they're nickel-and-diming things this winter.  But, spending big on a starting pitcher seems a lot likelier than pursuing one of the most expensive relievers.

Re-signing Yates might be an ideal fit, as he wouldn't cost all that much and obviously things worked out great in 2024
Pedro
8:02
Do you see both Blake Treinen and Evan Phillips re-signing with the Dodgers?
Mark P
8:03
Phillips isn't a free agent, first of all.  Treinen is certainly someone you'd think LA would want to bring back, and so a new contract wouldn't at all be surprising

8:04
With the Dodgers having quite a few injured pitchers returning (May, Gonselin, Sheehan mid-season, etc). Do the Dodgers trade a few due to possible roster crunch?
Mark P
8:06
They'll cross that bridge when they come to it, since the first order of business is ensuring that they have enough depth to guard against another injury wave.  That said, even with last year's injuries, they still had cause to move Paxton.
Yankees
8:06
Would Carlos Santana be a good fit in The Bronx as a one-year stopgap first base option?
Mark P
8:06
Sure, if they don't land Alonso, Walker, etc.
