How can offensively-challenged Cleveland consider trading Josh Naylor without replacing his production? Yes it is his walk year but if they trade him without replacing his production wouldn’t they be taking a step back?
Mark P
8:08
This is the give-and-take that the Guards often face in reloading their roster and dealing with their limited payroll.  In theory, Manzardo and Big Christmas can help fill the offensive void, but losing David Fry for at least part of the year is enough of a blow that I could now see Cleveland keeping Naylor.

Why so few captains in MLB? Seems like more guys would want that as an honor or as a small incentive to resign with a team in FA. Judge obviously didn't take a real cut to stay, but the captaincy enshrines him there in a fairly specific way that I'd think more guys would want to emulate.
Mark P
8:10
"Captains" aren't as much of a thing in MLB as in other sports.  You don't really need a symbolic C on a jersey or something to realize that Judge is the Yankees' leader, for instance.

With Mookie moving to the infield, do you see Lux being traded for a power reliever like Devin Williams or dumped for int'l bonus?
Mark P
8:13
This is another situation where the Dodgers might want to keep depth around.  Also, Lux still feels like something of a "young player" but he's now going into his second year of arb eligibility and he's turning 27 in a couple of weeks.  Lux has turned himself into a solid but unspectacular regular, and enough of the top prospect sheen has worn off that I'm not sure he can be a top trade chip
8:14
All this to say, I don't at all seeing Milwaukee accepting a Lux-for-Williams trade

Why do high profile free agents tend to stay away from Toronto? Is it the organization, or issues with customs/the border? Toronto was the place everyone wanted to play, but it seems now those who are there want out and those who aren't there have no intention of signing unless they're overpaid.
Mark P
8:17
This seems like an odd criticism to level towards a team that has signed Ryu, Springer, Bassitt, and Gausman to big-ticket contracts in recent years.  And got Berrios to sign a big extension.

How do you think the Yankees will manage the infield?
Mark P
8:19
Land a new starting 2B/3B, having Jazz at the other position, Volpe is naturally still the shortstop, and I think they'll get Alonso or Walker to play first base

Helsley to Baltimore for Kjerstad.  Who says no?  Thanks
Mark P
8:21
Orioles say no.  Zero chance they move one of their top position player prospects for one year of a closer

Should the  DBacks trade Gallen, ERod and Montgomery to go after Burnes?  Really doubt they resign Gallen. And they really need a horse and I don’t think it’s Gallen.
Mark P
8:22
I don't see how trading most of their pitching staff makes the D'Back a better team, even if you bring Burnes in (which they wouldn't)
I do think Arizona trades one of their starters before the winter is over, but not multiple starters

What can the Reds do to upgrade their team?  Assuming Martinez accepts the QO, that would put then around 91 mil after arbitration.  If they stay at their payroll from last year, which I believe was 100 mil, that doesn't leave them much money left to spend.  Do you think they'll active on the trade market?
Mark P
8:23
Not sure Martinez accepts the QO, but even still, trades definitely seem like Cincy's more logical method of roster-building.  Money will be tight, given the uncertainty over the broadcast deal.

Given how bad Bleday was defensively in CF this past season, which CF do you see them acquiring this winter to fill that gap?
Mark P
8:25
Not sure if the playing time situation is a fit, but a glove-first defender like Michael A. Taylor would work.

What do you think the chances are of Nathan Eovaldi signing with the Braves if he doesn’t go back to the Rangers??
Mark P
8:27
Eovaldi would make a ton of sense for the Braves, and you'd think he'd love to play for a contender.  Not that the Rangers couldn't bounce back, but I like Atlanta's chances in 2025 more than I like Texas' chances

How are the Jays going to address the offense issues?
Mark P
8:30
Acquire two big bats to play everyday (or mostly every day) in two of the left field, third base, second base, or DH positions.

Left field is the clearest landing spot for a big bat.  The young infield crew can handle 2B while a newcomer plays most of the time at third base.  Someone like Joc Pederson as the DH against righties would make a lot of sense.

Any chance of a Springer for arenado trade with the jays adding a little more?
Mark P
8:34
Springer has a partial no-trade clause covering eight teams per year, so this idea could be scuttled if St. Louis is on his list.  And of course Arenado has a full no-trade clause, and I'm not sure he'd want to go to a team that doesn't look like a clear contender.

Will the Braves make another trade for someone not being talked about, ie the Sale trade last year?
Mark P
8:36
Very possible.  It's hard to really predict an Atlanta offseason since AA always makes one or two moves that weren't on the radar whatsoever
Sasaki
8:36
Teams are prohibited from signing international posted free agents to pre-agreed extensions, but are they barred  from releasing them early to let them reach free agency? I.e., could a team promise to non-tender Sasaki after 3 years? That would be a ridiculous loophole, but haven't seen any explanation of how the rules preclude it.
Mark P
8:37
This is another situation where the league would step in with a "yeah, no"

Which team is most likely to meet the Brewers price for Williams?
Mark P
8:38
Loads of teams make sense on paper, ranging from big spenders to club that won't be making big splurges for Tanner Scott.  It'll be interesting to see what the Brewers land, or if they just hang onto Williams altogether.

Do you think the Yankees-Cole saga has any impact on higher-end FA pitching market?
Mark P
8:39
I don't think anyone really thought Cole would be available anyway, so it should have virtually no impact
Jerry Dipoto
8:40
Mariners off-season keys? Predictions on FAs we may target or sign? perhaps a guess who the next manager is?
Mark P
8:41
Wilson has the manager's job, that isn't in question.

Adding hitting is the easy answer, with a glaring need for some pop at second or third base.  Adding another outfielder/DH type also seems wise in case Robles comes back to earth, or Haniger struggles again.
8:42
As always, Dipoto is far more prone to address needs through trades rather than free agents.

Marcelo Mayer straight up for Bubba Chandler. Who says no?
