They can still be traded, since they weren't free agents.

What % chance is there that the Tigers spend 100 million plus on a player this off season? Harris has said several times that most of the growth will have to come internally. I'm worried that Chris Ilitch isn't going to open up the wallet.
Mark P
8:46
We already saw Ilitch okay some big expenditures with the Baez/E-Rod signing a few years ago, so it's not like he's against raising payroll.  Obviously the hope this time around is that money is spent more judiciously, but I do think Detroit will make one splashy type of move.

Harris isn't wrong when he highlights the importance of building from within, since the Tigers ultimately aren't going to win unless their core keeps developing.  But, it also doesn't help Harris from a negotiating perspective if he and Ilitch openly talked about spending big on free agents.

Is there any logical reasoning behind non tendering Rodgers and Quantrill instead of trying to find some kind of trade value?
Mark P
8:49
The Rox were surely exploring trades for both players prior to the NT deadline, yet couldn't find anything worthwhile.  If teams were offering some minimal prospect return with the Rockies still having to eat some salary, they apparently preferred just non-tendering the duo entirely.

Keep in mind that Quantrill and Rodgers were widely viewed as non-tender candidates anyway, so teams weren't eager to offer much for players they might get on the open market anyway.  Colorado didn't have much leverage in talks.

Does josh naylor get traded?

Probably, yes

We shoudl sign Bregman to be our new Werth.

The only Neuwirth I recognize is Bebe

(there's ANOTHER decades-old sitcom reference. Middle age is wearing on me.)
For an actual answer to your question, Bregman makes a lot of sense for the Nationals if they decided it was time to start going for it.

Who won the Reds and KC trade?
Mark P
8:54
Cop-out answer here, but this seems like a trade that fits pretty evenly for both sides.  It was an old-school need-for-need type of deal that I think will work out for everyone

Is there a non tendered contract that shocked you this off season
Mark P
8:55
Nothing hugely surprising.  Maybe the Nats just outright cutting Finnegan, but it also makes why teams were wary about trading for him (and why the Nats were wary about paying him)

Giants get a shortstop and call it good or might they get more or do they keep what they have and hope for the best?
Mark P
8:57
It'd have to be a particularly good shortstop like Adames to make the Giants consider more or less closing the book on any further offseason moves.  They're surely not standing pat.

What do you think Josh Naylor's trade market looks like? Do you think Cleveland will move him before or after Soto signs?
Mark P
9:00
Alonso and Walker are probably the bigger factors in a Naylor trade than Soto. Obviously teams like the Yankees and Mets also need first base help so they'd likely be involved in Naylor's market beyond their pursuit of Soto.  But, the Guardians might look to shop Naylor to the 1B-needy teams (i.e. Rays, Brewers, D'Backs, Mariners, Pirates) that likely won't be in on any of the top free agents

9:04
Is a Milwaukee/Toronto trade doable...Devin Williams for Ernie Clement and Kendry Rojas.  Enough for 1 year of Williams?  Too much?
Mark P
9:05
Brewers would want a lot more than that for Williams

I see a bigger signing for the Angels. Why would they go out in the early on and get all these role players, unless they intend on fielding a contending team?
Mark P
9:07
Keep in mind that the Angels planned to contend last winter too, yet only added a few relievers.  It is possible Arte Moreno wants to make a bigger signing to try and change the narrative around his team, but I'll believe it when I see it

All this talk about the Braves needing a SS.  Why not give the position to Nacho? Some of the excitement in Baseball is when a newbie makes a splash. why trade away all your appealing prospects?, I love Oz but seems he is too injury prone so why not get value?
Mark P
9:08
It's asking a lot of a rookie to step into an everyday role on a contending team, particularly at a key position like shortstop.
9:09
Obviously the Braves have given chances to a lot of prospects in recent years and gotten great results, but those guys had higher prospect pedigrees than Alvarez.

There have been some rumblings that the Pirates will be more active in fielding a competitive team via trade and or FA?
Mark P
9:11
This is another "believe it when I see it" situation simply based on how the Pirates operate.  But on paper, it makes a lot of sense that the Bucs would make a bigger push while they have Skenes and Jones both in the majors and already producing.

Do you think the rays could look to trade Yandy Diaz being that they’ll have an even lower payroll & attendance for the foreseeable future? Or do you think they intend to keep him & add pieces to compete?
Mark P
9:16
2025 is Yandy's last guaranteed year on a $10MM salary, and there's a $12MM club option for 2026.  Generally once the salaries hit eight figures, the Rays start being more and more open to trades, even before this ballpark situation erupted.

There was plenty of buzz about him at the deadline, which could've been the Rays laying the foundation for bigger talks this winter.  Obviously the ballpark conundrum has added a whole new dimension to the Rays' 2025 plans, but it shouldn't broadly change the fact that Diaz has always been a trade candidate
Can I get a poll?

Marcelo Mayer for Garrett Crochet
Mark P
9:19
The BoSox probably add some low-level prospect along with Mayer so it isn't a clear 1-for-1, but this trade makes sense on paper for both teams.

That being said, Mayer is also probably the most untouchable of Boston's "big four" prospects.  If Boston did swing a big deal for Crochet, it's more likely one of the other three will be the centerpiece rather than Marcelo

I love Milwaukee, and said I'd be willing to stay for less. What would do you think a hometown discount would look like for me?
Mark P
9:23
To be clear, Adames intimated that he'd take less to stay in Milwaukee, but my read on that was that the Brewers would still to be in the general ballpark of the other offers.  If other teams offered him $140MM and the Brewers went to $135MM, sure, but he's unlikely to go much beyond that
