You mean in terms of committing a bunch of money to a star?  Sure, I think it'll happen, even if the Brewers might not be willing to truly splurge on more than one guy.

Chourio is already showing signs that he might be the next face of Milwaukee baseball, btw
Hi

What do you think about the Yankees resigning Torres to a 5 year 100 million dollar deal. I get a lot of fans don’t seem to like him but he was a serviceable leadoff hitter this year and one of our few consistent hitters this postseason
Mark P
9:31
I don't think there's any chance Torres is back in the Bronx, and certainly not at anywhere near that kind of contract.  We had him at two years and $36MM in our prediction.

Acquiring Chisholm was the first hint that the Yankees were moving on from Torres, as Chisholm will either just move right into 2B next season or stay at third if NY gets another second baseman

Does Trevor Story to SF make any sense if they miss out on a FA SS?
Mark P
9:32
Not really, because if you're the Giants, why are you acquiring an expensive and injury-prone player?

The answer is no.  And the non-typo version of your question is funnier, since imagine Tony Soprano calling games.

Do the Phillies trade Bohm, Castellanos, and Ranger
Mark P
9:35
I think at least one of this trio will be playing for another team on Opening Day.  Feels like the Phillies are itching to make a prominent trade to try and figure out the right roster mix.  Of that group, obviously Castellanos is the hardest to move.

Does KC go after a starting pitcher to fill the void after trading Singer? Bubic, Lynch, and Marsh have not even fully proven they can be counted on the be # 5 starters. I know they have Wright coming back as well.
Mark P
9:36
Seems quite likely.  The success that Lugo and Wacha both enjoyed is a good advertisement to other mid-level pitchers that playing for KC can help improve your game, so landing another starter wouldn't necessarily cost the Royals too much.  Or, they could look to the trade market for a starter.

9:38
Since David Bednar has been tendered, do you envision him being traded?
Mark P
9:39
Leaning towards no, because the Pirates would be selling low.  They might feel they'd get more in a possible trade next offseason or (if the Bucs aren't contending) at the deadline if Bednar has a bounce-back year, so Pittsburgh probably just sees if Bednar can recover his old form in their bullpen

Are the A's making a mistake holding onto Brent Rooker? They have Kurtz and Soderstrom to fill the 1B/DH spots. In 2025, it seems like just about every team, besides the White Sox, Angels, Marlins, Cardinals, and Rockies, are trying to contend, so potentially a lot of suitors/leverage to make a deal.
Mark P
9:43
If another team made the A's a knockout offer for Rooker tomorrow, they'd surely consider it and quite possibly take it.  But, even if he isn't truly untouchable, the A's might be encouraged enough by their second half performance to think they can start winning more consistently in 2025.

Keep in mind, Rooker is absolutely found money for the A's, as he was picked up as a flier.  So they could try to double down on that by trading him for a big prospect return, but there's also a logical argument to be made for just enjoying having a very productive hitter on your team.

Someone might want to check in on Rayban up at the Overlook Hotel.  And I'd say the Mariners' rotation is the best, but Tampa is right up there

The Soler/Canning trade was kinda strange. Do you think the Braves were planning to keep Canning until Jimenez' injury forced them to prioritize looking for an RP, or were they going to non-tender him from the start?
Mark P
9:46
A non-tender was probably the plan from the jump, as if nothing else, the trade got some money off Atlanta's books.  Keep in mind that getting Soler wasn't on the Braves' radar at all, as that trade wouldn't have happened if Acuna hadn't been injured, or if Kelenic/Duvall/Rosario had worked out

I keep wondering everyday, why didn't the Jays sign Vladdy and Bichette to long term, more team "friendly" deals years ago?
Mark P
9:51
Vlad and Bichette both started their careers with decent-sized signing bonuses, plus they're obviously both the sons of well-paid ballplayers.  So the financial need that sometimes inspires players to sign early-career extensions wasn't really there.

It's also worth noting that the pandemic hit right after as the two started their careers.  So while the Jays were still spending during this period, bigger-picture concepts like locking up either young star might've fallen by the wayside a bit during the era when the Jays were stuck outside of Toronto

Did I miss something, or have we really not seen any reporting connecting the Nats and Soto?
Mark P

Nothing public to date like a meeting, though I'd be surprised if the front office hadn't checked in with Scott Boras on the topic.

Lots of puzzling non-tenders. Have the Orioles gone cheap again by non-tendering Coulombe and Webb? Both had sub 3 ERA's and weren't due that much money.
Mark P
9:54
Coulombe was injured for a big chunk of last season, and Webb's control has been shaky.  I admit that Coulombe's non-tender surprised me as well, but I get the logic.

A team could have a brand new rotation if they want. Snell, Burnes, Fried and Bieber. Do you think this could be a strategy an owner or GM has?
Mark P
9:56
I'd argue that no team would make such a massive spend on three top FA pitchers plus Bieber.  Not even the Mets, and certainly not an Angels team that has been reluctant to invest in long-term deals for starters

Perhaps if Dr. Evil ever buys a team
9:57
Cue a bunch of "I'd prefer Dr. Evil to my team's owner!" jokes from, like, 26 of 30 fanbases
Why bother?
9:58
The Royals met with Soto. Why? There is a 0 percent chance he signs there and 0 percent chance they can afford him. Why waste each others time?
Mark P
9:59
It costs nothing to at least ask.  Also, Scott Boras represents a lot of players. Could be that the Royals were checking in with him about any number of other guys and added "hey, while I've got you on the phone, indulge me...what does Soto want?"

Detroit signs Buehler and Boyd to reasonable. Esp. Buehler who probably takes a prove-it deal.  Leaves them $$ to pursue an upper-tier bat?
Mark P
10:02
Buehler as a repeat of the Flaherty contract makes sense.  I'd argue that Detroit could aim higher on the pitching side since they have enough payroll space to land an upper-tier pitcher AND hitter
