Posey
2:11
Could you see the giants trading for arenado now that he’s open to playing 1B
Mark P
2:12
That report didn't make a lot of sense to me, since having Arenado's glove at first base seems like a waste.  He is still a very good defensive 3B, and since his bat has been on the decline the last two years, putting him at first base doesn't really fill a need on offense
Hits Like Rays
2:12
The Rays need a right-handed hitting outfielder.  Who do you expect them to try to trade for?  Or do they just go cheap and hope that Christopher Morel is the answer?
Mark P
2:13
They'll continue to give Morel plenty of chances at the plate, but having him as an outfielder isn't a great defensive fit.
2:14
Any number of outfielders might fit as trade candidates since the Rays aren't likely to be spending big, and a SP-for-OF deal seems plausible

2:14
Obviously the talk of the Mets so far has focused on Soto/starting pitching, but what kind of moves could you see them making to improve their very shaky bullpen?
Mark P
2:15
I'm pretty confident Stearns will swing his usual magic and pick up a few unheralded pitchers who end up being big contributors to the Mets' bullpen.  I see them committing their bigger dollars to the higher-priced targets and being relatively conservative with bullpen spending
Phils in 2025
2:16
Can Walker be unloaded.  To angels or athletics for a prospect
Mark P
2:17
Walker is the type of player I was thinking of when discussing the Athletics' payroll situation earlier.  If the A's think Walker can bounce back with a change of scenery, they can get him from the Phils for virtually nothing in prospect return if they offered to take on even half his remaining salary.

The Giants are awful quiet with a lot of holes . With Snell gone to hated rival Dodgers what do the Giants do to compete ?
Mark P
2:21
Adding Adames would be such an obvious upgrade that I'd hope the Giants are seriously exploring the signing
2:24
Back after rebooting my router!  I was dealing with some lag issues but we should be okay now

Paul Goldschmidt to Milwaukee?
Mark P
2:26
Apparently the Brewers have interest but Rhys Hoskins is already there at 1B and the team probably doesn't want to lock up the DH spot.  Hoskins might be an interesting trade candidate if Milwaukee did make a push for Goldy, but Hoskins is making a good chunk of money

Beads?!
Oh hi Mark
2:28
If you were the GM for a team with 2 starter spots to fill and $25 million to spend on those pitchers who are you getting?
Mark P
2:30
Hmm, am I allowed to devote a couple of million on Roki Sasaki and then spend the rest to two back-end guys and move to a six-man rotation?

Or, perhaps I'd just go with Bieber and Turnbull, within your parameters.  Maybe Verlander and Turnbull depending on how much JV is asking for
CBT Circumvention
2:31
Deferred money and signing bonuses, do you agree this will continue to be a way to lower CBT and pay for championships in future years, and is this an issue for MLB?
Mark P
2:32
Tim Dierkes wrote last year at the time of the Ohtani signing how these deals aren't technically circumventing any rules.  And, the Ohtani contract is such a unique circumstance that it is unlikely to be replicated, since no other player has the endorsement revenue to feel okay about deferring almost the entirety of a $700MM contract

Oh hi Mark
2:33
What's your pulse on the Josh Hader signing after 1 year? Has Houston made a mistake giving him so much?
Mark P
2:35
Hader had a good season, with better secondary numbers than his 3.80 ERA would imply.  In fact, his SIERA last season was 2.38, so it basically the reverse of how he outperformed his peripherals in 2023
So in short, I don't view that deal as a mistake for Houston.

agree or disagree? The Giants hiring of Posey was a get-out-of-jail-free card that was made primarily to reset Giants culture and gave them a good excuse to slow down the process of competing. I don't see the Giants making many big moves this winter
Mark P
2:37
A team that wasn't making big moves wouldn't have already locked up Matt Chapman to a huge contract.  But, I think it is true that Posey will receive way more leeway from fans and media than Zaidi ever did.

2:38
Why is Philly resistant to include Crawford and Miller for Crochet? Left handed aces with 2 years if team control don't come cheap
Mark P
2:39
Two top-60 position player prospects also don't come cheap.  If you're the Phillies and have so much invested in your roster already, it's a huge help to get a prospect or two emerging to provide cheaper help somewhere on the roster.
Mets Pitching
2:43
I keep thinking a trade between the mets and mariners for Castillo makes sense. If they take on his whole contract, I’d have to think the return wouldn’t have to be as steep. Could McNeil (whose salary and commitment is much leas than castillo) and a 50+ prospect get it done?
Mark P
2:44
McNeil has been a league-average or slightly below-average hitter in three of the last four seasons.  So he isn't exactly the type of hitting upgrade the Mariners need, plus I just have more faith that Castillo will be a better player in 2025 than McNeil will.

2:45
Does Matz have any trade value considering his $12.5M salary for 2025? I can't imagine so.
Mark P
2:47
If he was a free agent right now, no, he surely wouldn't get $12.5MM on a one-year deal.  He'd still get a few million guaranteed plus incentives, so if the Cardinals offered to eat a chunk of Matz's contract, he could be pretty easily moved.  Teams always need pitching help.

What are the rumors on teams interested and in on Jeff Hoffman? Are the Bosox interested?
Mark P
2:49
No specific teams have been known to be in on Hoffman, apart from the Phillies being open to bringing back either him or Estevez (but not both, as Dombrowski implied).

The most interesting Hoffman info this winter is that he's drawn some consideration as a starter rather than as a reliever: https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2024/11/jeff-hoffman-starting-pitcher-r...

Has Bochy signed an extension??? It seems like he is still having fun.
Mark P
2:50
Bochy is still only signed through 2025, but my guess is that the Rangers have a pretty open-ended arrangement with him.  If Bochy wants to keep managing, a new deal will be pretty quickly arranged.
Royals!
2:50
Hey , what do you think the Royals do to fix their outfield hitting problem? do we trade for a bat  or do we sign someone like Profar or Santander?
Mark P
2:51
Santander would be a great add for the Royals.  I'd say Profar as well but I'm just not sold on Profar as a consistent threat, given his up-and-down career.

Would signing Corbin Burnes and, say, Sugano give the Giants one of the top rotations in the MLB?
