I'd say it would be more of a high-ceiling rotation than a true elite pitching staff.  Burnes/Webb is an excellent top two, but Harrison is still a little unproven, Ray is a question mark, Sugano would be a question mark coming to MLB for the first time, and all the younger guys aren't established.

Still, that's a lot of upside if one or two things break right (and enough depth to help if one or two things went wrong).

Do you think the Red Sox would give up Abreu or Casas to move Yoshida?
Mark P
2:56
Moving Casas in particular just to get Yoshida's deal off the books would seem like a real waste of resources.  The Red Sox have plenty of money, so having to eat Yoshida's contract (if it comes to that) is far from the end of the world

So do the Angels give Rendon one more shot this year to turn it around before releasing him?
Mark P
2:57
Yeah, though "one more shot" might manifest itself as just a few months

Would the A’s take on Candelario’s contract if the Reds throw in prospect in the 5-10 range for Rooker
Mark P
2:59
To get Rooker AND move Candelario's contract at the same time, the Reds would have to include Chase Burns and then some in this trade package.

Which team is lurking that nobody is expecting will shock us with a surprise signing?
Mark P

I'm a little disappointed that the Nats aren't making a run at Soto, since that would've been a lot of fun

Seattle had relatively extraordinary luck with the health of their rotation in '24. Perhaps their training/conditioning/medical staff deserves some credit, but it'd hard to believe they'll be as stable next season.
Lots of talk of bats -- which is warranted -- but I think the M's would be wise to add some capable depth to their staff.
Mark P
3:03
This is the other side of the "Mariners should trade a starter!" debate.  You never know when a pitcher might get injured, so if Seattle dealt someone and then they had one or two guys get hurt suddenly, the rotation that was once a huge strength is now a lot weaker
While I do think the M's should trade a starter for a premium hitter, I can't blame Dipoto for wanting to keep this great pitching staff together for as long as possible

Does the the yankees go all in and sign multiple big names like they did before the 09 season?
Mark P
3:06
It's kinda wild to think that Soto will land more by himself than all the combined stars of the 2008-09 Yankees offseason, but that's the price of doing business.

If Soto signs elsewhere, I could see New York trying to compensate by going on a multi-player spree to address numerous needs.

What about jays signing Alonso playing Vladdy at 3rd and signing an outfielder
Mark P
3:07
Vlad can't play 3B every day, so he and Alonso would be mostly rotating through the 1B/DH spots.  However, if Guerrero could do 30-40 games a year at third base, that would be a nice help to the Jays' lineup construction

Pirates have a shot at Roki Sasaki?
Mark P
3:09
Technically sure, since every team in the league can "afford" him.  But, Sasaki is surely likely to join a team with a more clear-cut chance at winning immediately, unless Sasaki just really wants to be Skenes' teammate

Would the Rangers consider trading Josh Jung for Devin Williams?
Mark P
3:10
They're not moving Jung for one year of Williams

Is Sasaki posting being in the 2025 period slowing down the pitching market?
Mark P
3:11
Snell has signed, Kikuchi has signed, Nick Martinez stayed put....seems like a decent amount of activity on the pitching market thus far, actually.

As noted earlier, Soto is somewhat holding up a lot of the market, for both position players and pitchers.  Once he signs, we'll see more movement amongst the bigger and smaller names.

Do you think the Red Sox will be aggressive in getting Sasaki?   They want to spend $, and he is only 23 years old which fits the core of their team moving forward.  Elite delivery and stuff.   What do you expect him to sign for?
Mark P
3:14
It's not about money for Sasaki, since every team is limited by its international bonus pool.  He's leaving so much money on the table already just in coming to MLB early that I doubt extra salary is a deal-breaker for him.  Boston would have to sell him that they're a team on the rise with talent at the MLB level, more coming in the pipeline, and an ownership group ready to be aggressive again

Where do you think the Rays are playing their games in 2026 and beyond?
Mark P
3:16
It's stunning how quickly this whole new ballpark deal may have fallen apart, and how the hurricane may have forever altered the landscape of baseball in Tampa.  I'd still guess for now that they'll be playing at some minor league park in 2026-27, but it seems like moving the franchise altogether is very much back on the table.

My pet favorite scenario for the Brewers is signing Christian Walker, and then trading Hoskins to a team that lost out on Walker or wasn't willing to pony up for Alonso. I suspect for that to work, though, they'd have to coordinate taking on a contract from the acquiring team.
Mark P
3:19
Walker in Milwaukee would be fun, and a great fit.  Hoskins is the obstacle there, and you're right, it would have to be a 'bad contract swap' or else the Brewers would have to just eat a good chunk of Hoskins' salary.  That latter scenario is probably unlikely given that they'd already be paying a lot to outbid the market for Walker

Could I possibly be Queens-bound?
Mark P
3:22
There have already been a couple of Mets/Brewers trades since Stearns took over, so it doesn't appear as there's any real bad blood between the two sides.  Adding Williams would certainly help NY's pen, and despite what I wrote earlier about Stearns targeting lower-level guys, he might make an exception for a familiar face like Williams

What was the lure of Miguel Vargas for the White Sox? He looked pretty overmatched for the Sox to have just given Fedde and Kopeck away for.
Mark P
3:24
We're barely a year removed from Vargas being a top-60 prospect, so I can see the appeal from Chicago's perspective.  It could be that Vargas needed more time to adjust after the trade but the early returns obviously weren't great.
3:26
It did admittedly seem like a pretty light return for the Sox.  And that trade is yet another example of how you never know what deadline deal will end up paying the biggest dividends, as Edman and Kopech ended up being so important to the Dodgers' title

I'm sure the A's will have to pay extra if they are to sign a mid-level free agent this Winter. Who do you see as possible targets for them?
Mark P
3:27
This is the other reason why the Athletics should be proactive in taking on contracts in trades --- I find it hard to believe many people are going to want to sign to play in a minor league park.

With Ohtani coming back next year to pitch, I assume they are going to a 6 man rotation. You see them going out and getting another frontline starter or some middle of the rotation type?
Mark P
3:31
If everyone stays healthy, LA has more than enough pitchers for a six-man rotation. Simple logic dictates that not everyone will stay healthy, but the Dodgers can probably just address that at the deadline as they did in getting Flaherty last year.  Snell will probably be their one big pitching addition for the winter, at least on the rotation end.

The best general manager ever is me right? Also, what do you think about letting my kids play: Baldwin and Nacho could handle their positions, Walderp looks like our next closer... your thoughts?
Mark P
3:33
The best GM ever is Stan Musial, who led the Cardinals to a World Series title in his lone year as general manager in 1967.  Was there anything Musial couldn't do?!

Anyway, giving Alvarez a look at shortstop isn't a bad fallback option, plus Arcia is still there for backup purposes.  Baldwin might get more action as a backup but obviously he isn't supplanting Murphy entirely.

Soto signs before, after, or during Winter Meetings?
