What’s going on with Spencer Torkelson with Colt Keith moving to first base? Will the Tigers trade Torkelson or keep him in the minors to do some more work?
Mark P
7:46
Feels like the writing is increasingly on the wall about a Torkelson trade.  He can still get at-bats against left-handed pitching in place of Carpenter, but Keith stepping in at first base really closes the door on a lot of playing time for Tork

In general, the Torres deal was a bit of a surprise from my perspective.  I'm not sure he's necessarily the best upgrade possible, even if the Tigers badly needed a right-handed bat.  Being just a one-year deal, the Tigers might view Keith as ultimately the long-term 2B and 2025 will be one more year of seasoning for Torkelson, but I dunno.

I like JV finishing up in Detroit on a one year finale, but does the Cobb signing kill it?
Mark P
7:48
Scott Harris has said the Tigers are done with starting pitching after signing Cobb, but that could be some gamesmanship.  The other point to be made is that I suspect Verlander is viewing 2025 as his bounce-back season, not his last season
Father Time could make the decision for him, but JV has been vocal about wanting to pitch as long as he can

Is mid January a realistic timeframe where we could see more trades involving starting pitchers (ie. cease/castillo/montgomery) after Sasaki signs? Feels like he’s another domino waiting to fall before more moves are made
Mark P
7:50
I wrote in my chat the other day that I thought Burnes wouldn't be signing until after Sasaki signs, but whoops!

Your point is well-made, however.  If the Padres or Mariners got Sasaki, for instance, that really opens up the door for either to make a trade

Would Randal Grichuk be a good signing for the Reds to platoon with Jake Fraley?
Mark P
7:51
I guess it depends if Grichuk views his 2024 as a sign that he deserves more of a regular role, or if he views it as evidence that he is an excellent platoon bat, and is marketing himself as such.  If the latter, Grichuk is a good fit for many teams, and a particularly good fit for Cincy's needs

In your estimation, could Sasaki be top 10 SP in MLB in 2025?
Mark P
7:54
It's a compliment to Sasaki's ability that this scenario isn't out of the question.  But, realistically, no.

Arraez for Stott, maybe balanced by a prospect on either side. Who says no? Phillies get contact hitter, SD gets payroll relief and a SS
Mark P
7:56
Stott is actually a pretty good contact hitter, so that trade wouldn't really solve the Phillies' overall swing-and-miss issues.  (Missues?)

Now that ownership does not appear to be an excuse…is Baltimore just not a desirable destination for free agents or is Elias more comfortable as the small-market underdog?
Mark P
8:01
To be fair, they signed O'Neill to a multi-year deal, and landed Sugano.  While Baltimore hasn't been shopping at the top of the market (yet), it's not correct to say they've been eschewing notable free agents altogether

Do you think if Ryan Pressly was going to be traded it would have happened already? I know Houston was interested in moving him.
Mark P
8:03
The relief market as a whole has been relatively slow to develop, and I could see Pressly being moved once a couple more of the bigger free agent relievers leave the board.  Not that Pressly is necessarily easy to trade, given his salary

Happy holidays Mark, question about the Rangers possibly acquiring Jordan Montgomery from Arizona. If Arizona helps to pay his salary, and the Rangers part with a prospect. Your thoughts?
Mark P
8:05
The Rangers already have enough rotation options that taking a relative flier on a bounce-back year from Montgomery may not appeal to them that much, even with the D'Backs covering some salary

Ranger Suarez to the orioles for a prospect package. Phil’s probably won’t resign with boras calling the shots.  Win win?
Mark P
8:12
Attaching Suarez to Castellanos or even Bohm might be more helpful for the Phillies, but Baltimore doesn't have much use for either of those hitters
Orioles GM for Today
8:14
You're running the Orioles. In a realistic best case scenario, what moves need to be made the rest of this offseason for them to be legit contenders in 2025?
Mark P
8:15
They're "legit contenders" already, in the sense that I think the Orioles are exceedingly likely to make the playoffs again.  And they might be better just by dint of the young guys getting more MLB seasoning.

This all being said, I do feel they need an ace to headline that rotation.
corbin burnes contract structure
8:16
With the way the opt-out is in the 2nd year, he will opt out in the offseason where a work stoppage is almost certain to occur. This means that either he will sign extremely early or re-sign/restructure his deal with the Diamondbacks. Do you think Burnes finishes his career as a Diamondback and goes into the HOF as a snake?
Mark P
8:19
The (likely) possibility of another work stoppage creates an interesting wrinkle.  Montgomery/Gallen/Kelly/Naylor/Suarez will all be off the books by next winter, so if Burnes' first season in Arizona goes swimmingly, I could see another season or two tacked onto his deal in exchange for dropping the opt-out.

Keep in mind, this isn't a decision Burnes or the D'Backs have to make until the end of the 2026 season, so I might be jumping the gun just by talking about next winter's expiring contracts.  Burnes obviously has a particular interest in playing close to home, so that might provide another step towards him being more willing to re-work his deal to stick around in Arizona

I’ve been seeing a lot of rumors online about the Yankees trying to pull off a trade for Donovan, is that just a bs rumor or has anyone heard anything?
Mark P
8:21
The Yankees' interest in Donovan dates back to last year, and there hasn't been any recent reporting about continued trade pushes.  But, between Donovan's solid season and the fact that he'd so perfectly check many boxes for the Yankees, it would be surprising if NY hadn't continued calling the Cardinals.

Since St. Louis isn't doing a full-on rebuild, I don't see Donovan being moved.  He's under team control through 2027, and the Cards surely think they can contend again before that

As quiet as Atlanta's offseason has been, Anthopoulos can swing a trade out of nowhere at any time.

Gorman for Torkelson?
Mark P

With Contreras set to cover most of the 1B time in St. Louis, this doesn't seem like a fit for the Cardinals
