While Yoshida be on the Red Sox roster for opening day?
Mark P
8:30
Yes, because I think it'll be really tricky to trade him without the BoSox just eating a big chunk of his salary
Magnaking
8:31
A recent article mentioned that the Guardians had an interest in Gleyber Torres for 2B, does this mean that Cleveland is suddenly in the 2B market? A possible trade with Tampa for Brandon Lowe for Slade Cecconi since Tampa had an interest jn him last season?
Mark P
8:32
Doubt that would be enough to pry Lowe out of Tampa, but another trade package is plausible.  Or, the Guardians might look for another second baseman altogether, since their mix of 2B candidates for 2025 isn't too inspiring
Don
8:34
Kelenic for Montgomery and some cash. Who says no?
Mark P
8:34
Diamondbacks don't have much use for another left-handed hitting outfielder
Victor Robles
8:34
Should I have tried free agency instead of signing that 2 yr extension? What do you think I would've gotten on the open market?
Mark P
8:35
I think Robles made a great move in signing that extension so quickly.  Keep in mind that he seemed to be in career limbo just weeks earlier, so I can't fault him at all for jumping quickly to lock up some financial security
White Sox
8:36
Should we make a move on Kim at shortstop to improve our infield?
Mark P
8:37
Do you mean Ha-Seong Kim or Hyesong Kim?  Or, you might as well mean prominent attorney Kim Wexler, since I don't think the White Sox are candidates to sign either

Thinking about the Twins, Does a team feel defeated heading into the season when their Owner does nothing to invest in the team via free agent signings or trades?
Mark P
8:40
The players read the news just like everyone else, and it can't be great for Twins players to hear all the buzz (or lack of buzz, more accurately) about their team.

Pros can learn to tune out the noise, or Baldelli can perhaps convert this into "nobody believes in us" motivational energy.  But at it stands now, the Twins face an uphill battle this season.
Mets Reunions
8:42
How plausible is a Jesse Winker return to the Mets right now? After 1B is solved they could probably still use a bench bat and Winker gelled extremely well with the clubhouse last year
Mark P
8:44
The Mets still have interest in his services, as was reported the other day by Will Sammon of The Athletic.  Probably the Mets are first seeing what happens with Alonso or Bregman before turning their attention further down the depth chart.  For Winker's part, he might also be willing to wait, since you'd think he'd like to return to Queen all things being equal

I'm not sure why the Vikings showed up to play today, they barely won

We interrupt this baseball chat for my hot take prediction that Minnesota is going to win the Super Bowl.

8:46
Any buzz or chatter - like at all - on Kershaw for 2025?
Mark P
8:46
Much like McCutchen and the Pirates, it's likely just a matter of time before Kershaw and the Dodgers work out their next contract
Johnny
8:47
Ha ha ha what a story Mark. Are there any rumblings on how teams view Hoffman or how they project him as a starter?
Mark P
8:49
There hasn't been a ton of buzz on Hoffman.  The Phillies had interest in re-signing him as a reliever, but Dombrowski said the other day that their major bullpen moves are probably over, now that Romano has been signed and Ross is in as a swingman.  Not *entirely* sure how much I believe Dombrowski there, but regardless, a return to the Phillies might not be in the cards for Hoffman.

As I noted earlier, the bullpen market hasn't really gotten cooking yet, so we might see more of a run on relievers once another domino or two starts to fall.

I can appreciate Julio Rodriguez s baseball abilities. However, can he be called a superstar given his inability to string together a consistently highly productive season. All his numbers are heading south.
Mark P
8:51
Today is J-Rod's birthday, and he is all of 24 years old.  Since a lot of guys aren't even in the big leagues by that age, some inconsistency is to be expected, but the upside is clearly there
Mackey Klutts

How old were u for your 1st MLB game u attended ?
Mark P

I was in my age-seven season

Should more relief pitchers grow out facial hair?  Seems like the Rod Beck beard is dying out a bit…
Mark P
8:55
There is no more immediate way for a player to gain notoriety than to have some kind of wacky facial hair.

If rumors of Giants looking toward Pete Alonso materialize, any chance of the Royals snapping up LaMonte Wade for  the KC outfield, much needed in light of the 2024 offensive shortcomings? I know not what the Royals might offer in such a deal, or if they'd be interested since, as I understand it, Wade may be a free agent next fall. Also, KC has come infield surplus and, I wonder, if Castillo might be fetched away with a deal improving the Mariners' infield defense, and perhaps offense.
Mark P
8:59
Wade has played increasingly less outfield over the years, so I don't think KC would view him as a solution in the corner outfield spots.

As much as Seattle needs infield help in general, offense ahead of defense surely if their biggest concern at this point

Do you think a 3-way trade could facilitate the moving of both Yoshida and Montgomery along with the eating of some money? I feel like the benefits to both the Sox and Snakes would be worth it.
Mark P
9:03
I personally think Montgomery is going to be better in 2025 than Yoshida, plus it would have to be quite a creative deal for the D'Backs to have much interest, as much as Monty might be available.

Yoshida's trade value is quite limited.  He has $54MM left on his deal, and if he'd signed for that total amount two years, some teams would've still felt the Sox overpaid
Window
9:03
I think Sasaki's posting window expires January 23.  With the international signing period not opening until January 15, that leaves a pretty narrow window to sign him.
Mark P
9:04
Teams can negotiate with Sasaki already.  He just won't sign until January 15 at the earliest
Andy Pages
9:05
Why does the front office keep burying me in the depth chart? Do you think they will trade me?
Mark P
9:06
Conforto is only signed for one year, so that might just be a temporary roadblock for Pages.  It did seem like he'd shown enough to earn more playing time, but perhaps a team in permanent win-now mode has the luxury of keeping Pages as an overqualified depth piece

Will the pirates sign charlie Morton?
Mark P
9:08
It would seemingly require the Bucs to trade another pitcher from their rotation first, which isn't an impossibility if such a trade would land them some hitting

Is this the year for Dick Allen to get into the Hall of Fame?
Mark P
9:09
You missed the news a few weeks ago, but Allen did indeed get voted in by the veterans' committee

That's it for me tonight, thanks so much for all the questions!
