Do you think the Mets taking such a hard line in Pete Alonso negotiations is driven by the fact they have their sights on Vladmir Guerrero (either by trade this year or free agent signing next year), and in doing so would mean really wouldn't need Pete anymore?
Mark P
7:18
This is a distinct possibility
Kam
7:18
Are you surprised that more teams operating on tight budgets haven’t made moves to free up money? Seems the Twins, Mariners, Padres could have moved some salary if needed to free up more operating flexibility but instead find themselves kind of stuck in neutral.
Mark P
7:19
The problem is that you've got so many teams on tight budgets that it's hard to find trade partners.  And the few teams who are in clear rebuild mode don't seem to have much appetite for eating big contracts to take on prospects.
John Henry
7:21
Am I the most disliked owner in sports by his teams fans?
Mark P
7:21
Not even close.  Four rings and a broken curse go a long way towards Henry's long-term reputation in Boston.
IT JUST HAPPENED
7:22
earlier in the chat someone asked the odds pressly would get traded in this chat and it actually happened WOW
Mark P
7:22
It would be great if the guy who submitted that was Jed Hoyer, giggling to himself because after submitting the paperwork to the league
ATL
7:23
What say you on Profar? Be nice!
Mark P
7:24
Solid signing on paper, with the big question naturally being whether Profar has really turned the corner after his huge 2024 season.  He's not that expensive, however, which either makes him a relatively inexpensive risk for Atlanta, and potentially a major bargain

The fact that the Mets remained engaged with Pete Alonso seems to indicate they still have money to spend. Could they perhaps pivot toward.Ryan Flaherty and go to a 6 man rotation?
Mark P
7:27
I assume you mean Jack Flaherty and not former Orioles utilityman Ryan Flaherty.  :)

The Mets' rotation still looks thin to me, and more quantity over necessarily quality.  Obviously if Senga is healthy and pitches like his 2023 self, that's a big boost right there.  Adding another starter seems like a necessity at some point, but it remains to be seen if NY will do that in the offseason, or at the deadline

7:28
Does Ha-Seong Kim settle for.a one year "prove it" deal? Who are his most likely suitors at this point?
Mark P
7:28
Kim is another player perhaps caught up in waiting for Bregman to sign, even if their situations are markedly different.  Kim will almost certainly be signing a one-year contract since it isn't yet clear how much of the 2025 season he'll have to be miss while recovering from shoulder surgery.
Noah's Ark
7:29
How bad is the flood of questions?
Mark P
7:29
As bad as Darren Aronofsky's "Noah" movie.

7:30
The majority of players don’t make the huge salaries; why don’t they outvote the rich guys and approve a salary cap/floor for competitive balance?
Mark P
7:31
  1. Most players feel they're just a season away from a breakout, and getting themselves in position to be one of those higher-paid guys
  2. In the world where MLB had a salary cap, the middle-range salaried players are going to be the ones most impacted and squeezed out of jobs.

No idea why there's been no buzz about the Pirates trading for an outfielder. Much more cost-effective way to get an established bat than the FA market. They still need an outfielder and a reliever (at least) and are below last year's payroll. What's left for them over the next couple weeks?
Mark P
7:34
If I had to guess, the Pirates have so much young pitching that every call they make about an outfielder results in the other team inquiring about, say, Bubba Chandler (or maybe Jones, or even Skenes if the other team is feeling wild).  Like I noted earlier, the Ortiz trade might represent the extent to which the Pirates are willing to trade from their pitching depth, since they don't want to move too many arms and then find themselves short if injuries arise
The Final Boss
7:36
I think Roki > Dodgers is particularly bad, since it costs the Dodgers nothing in terms of money or draft capitol. If they want to exhaust those to win, fine. But Roki is absolutely free to the team that needs it the least. Yuck.
Mark P
7:38
The Sasaki signing is probably the move that Dodgers haters should be complaining about the least.  As you noted, it wasn't a case of LA outbidding teams or flexing their financial muscles.  It was Sasaki seemingly wanting to come to MLB early just to join a team of stars, including arguably the biggest legend in Japanese baseball history.
Royals
7:39
Are the recent signings of Biggio and others a sign that the Royals will not be adding a bat?
Mark P
7:39
He's a depth signing, not someone KC is counting on to provide real offense
Legends
7:40
Should spring training be shorter? Start season earlier and move up post season or longer first round.
Mark P
7:41
Starting the season earlier creates a lot of weather problems in a lot of northern cities.

7:42
Do u agree w/new HOF class ?
Mark P
7:43
Sure, all three guys are HOFers in my view.  I'm a little surprised Sabathia got in so easily in his first year, but whether it's first-ballot or tenth, everyone's got the same plaque
Kurt the Hurt
7:43
Could The Tigers and the Padres work out a trade with Dylan Cease going to Detroit and Outfielders Wenceel Perez and Justin Henry Malloy to San Diego ?
Mark P
7:43
San Diego would want a lot more than that for Cease
Zephyr
7:45
Do Rockies lose 100 games ?
Mark P
7:45
Probably
Mr Plow
7:45
Am I alone feeling completely uninspired by the Orioles off-season?
Mark P
7:46
What's that name again?

I'll point out for the umpteenth time in these chats that the Burnes trade didn't happen until February 1 last offseason, instantly changing the narrative on what had another quiet Orioles winter.  So another big move might still be in the offing.

7:47
Why didn’t the Cards just promote Bloom before this off-season? Waiting a year to do anything seems like a very strange way of operating.
Mark P
7:47
It does seem unusual, unless they felt they had to formally lock up Bloom to a contract to prevent another team from poaching him.

Why don’t you move at least one of your live chats to Twitch? People can replay the chat and see comments in real time. That would be cool. We’d get to see your face/s, and you could make a little $$$. Thanks.
Mark P
7:48
Seeing my face would, if anything, cost MLBTR money

Percent chance Alonso ends up a SF Giant on any terms vs. becoming a Blue Jay? I'm saying 15%.
Mark P
7:51
Alonso doesn't seem like a great match for the Giants, since even with an opt-out or two in a short-term contract, SF probably doesn't want any obstacle in Eldridge's way
