I feel the Royals’ season last year was lucky. They haven’t done much this offseason. What’s  next (if anything) and do they have room left in their budget with their $128M payroll?
Mark P
7:46
The outfield remains a problem, and Santander would've been such an enormous answer.
7:47
Grichuk is a player I feel like I've suggested for a dozen teams at this point, probably the Royals themselves in a previous chat.  But he'd be a fit.

How would you describe the Tigers 'strategy' this off-season? It has been quite frustrating.
Mark P
7:49
I expected Detroit to be more aggressive coming off a playoff berth.  While they've checked in on some big names, they're sticking to their guns in not handing out a contract they perceive as an overpay.  Maybe this is will end up being a wise move in the big picture, but that doesn't help the fact that Skubal might only be around for two more seasons.

Are there any notable catchers that might be available via trade next offseason if the Phillies should decide to move on from Realmuto
Mark P
7:52
Not to sound like a pessimistic Jays fan, but if the team struggles again and decides to blow it up, Alejandro Kirk will be available
Guardians of the Galaxy
7:52
Why did the Guardians sign Seward given how little money they have to invest in the club? Do you see Cleveland reinvesting the savings from trading long term contract obligations into extensions such as Kwan or some of the bullpen pieces?
Mark P
7:54
Doubling down on the bullpen might help the Guardians get back to the playoffs, but I agree that it seemed like a surprising move given how little Cleveland seemingly has to spent.  The Guards have traditionally tried to lock up guys early in their careers, so extending Kwan might be trickier even though he's still just in his first arb year

Rizzo to the Marlins just seems like a natural fit???
Mark P
7:54
Seems possible, as a veteran stopgap who'd be shopped at the deadline if all goes well

I'm assuming my question keeps getting lost in the chat feed, so I'll try one more time before giving up: What would a Torkelson deal look like for the Giants if they are interested? Would be much better platoon with Wade and it gives Eldridge time to develop a little bit more.
Mark P
7:56
Maybe one of the young pitchers?  Maybe the Tigers get bold and try to work out some kind of larger multi-player deal involving Ramos?  (Not that SF would be too eager to move him)

It feels like the Brewers are waiting on the Alex Bregman signing to make a 3rd base move. If he ultimately chooses Houston, they go after Paredes in trade. If he signs with Detroit, they focus on Vierling, and so on with Philly and Bohm. What say you?
Mark P
7:58
This seems possible.  In Detroit's case, Vierling is probably someone they'd want to keep, since Vierling can play at other positions and they still need the RHH balance.

Do the Astros trade Valdez before the trade deadline, if there other pitchers are healthy and producing?
Mark P
8:00
As we saw with the Brewers' Josh Hader trade, those kind of midseason trades can be a gut punch to a contender.  The rest of the rotation being healthy and productive probably means that Houston is battling for the division in this scenario, so it would take a notable return for them to move Valdez
8:01
Plus, as we've seen multiple times now, the Astros have no problem keeping an impending free agent on their roster for the full year, then letting him walk
Mark J
8:03
In my opinion, pretty passive, that Baez contract is not helping financially
Mark P
8:04
Baez and Colt Keith are the only Tigers players under contract beyond the 2025 season.  While the Baez deal is an albatross, the Tigers have plenty of available payroll space, based on their spending habits of just a few years ago.

What ever happened to Jon Daniels? Dude was super young to be a POBO and then he just disappeared after the Rangers moved on.
Mark P
8:06
Daniels has been working as an advisor within Tampa's front office.

Cubs for Bregman
Mark P
8:07
Can't rule it out given the uncertainty around Bregman's market.

So what if Skubal is only around for 2 more seasons?  Harris is trying to build a development system that regularly supplies the big club with players and can contend year in and year out.  Harris doesn’t buy into any “window” that has to be met because Skubal might walk as a free agent after 2026.
Mark P
8:09
If you have arguably the best pitcher in baseball on your roster, you should be trying to win while he's still around.  And, spending on a free agent doesn't have any impact on building a minor league pipeline.

And on that familiar note, we'll wrap things up for the evening. Thanks for all your questions!
