Mariners trade Bryce Miller and Colt Emerson for Jackson Merrill. That work?
Mark P
7:14
Definitely not for the Padres

Are the M's expecting teams to take on all of Castillo's contact? He's still very good, but there's not a lot of surplus  value there, is there? The M's would have to take back some salary or send somecas
Mark P
7:18
If Castillo was a free agent this offseason, would he have landed a three-year, $68.25MM deal?  Absolutely, and that's even an undersell.  So I don't think it's absurd for Dipoto to view a Castillo trade as far more than just a salary dump.

Ned?!  Ned Ryerson?!

How much regression is Churio in for this season?
Mark P
7:21
A sophomore slump wouldn't be surprising, but it's a great sign that Chourio got better as the season went on.  It shows that he got used to MLB pitching and was able to adjust.  The trick now will be seeing how he adjusts now that pitchers and coaches have more of a book on him, but I'm pretty confident he'll have another strong season.
Rizzo
7:21
Why did the Nats decide to punt again this season?
Mark P
7:23
In a division with three powerhouse teams, it's not that surprising that the Nationals are giving it one more year.  They can further see what they have in Wood and Crews plus the rest of the young core, and next winter seems likelier for the bigger push

7:23
The only notable signing was Soto and that was all Steve Cohen - signings made by David Stearns are what a small market GM does - hey dude, you are with the big boys now - not impressed - what say you -
Mark P
7:24
I'd say Manaea was a heck of a notable signing.  While New York could've done more with its rotation, in my view, the Mets' moves have made sense to me.  Keep in mind that Stearns' track record with "smaller" moves is awfully good, so I'm giving him plenty of benefit of the doubt
What about Ann?
7:25
Who's ann?
Mark P
7:25
Her?
7:26
(Oh man, part of me wanted to replace "beads/bees" with yet another obscure Arrested Development running joke.)
Balex Eggman
7:26
When will Alex Bregman sign?
Mark P
7:28
Bob Nightengale's read on the situation is that the Blue Jays could be the mystery team with a six-year offer, along with the Astros' 6/$156MM offer that is reportedly still on the table.  So at this point it seems like Bregman is deciding whether or not to take one of the longer offers, or keep holding out for another suitor (Detroit? Boston?) to tack another year or more money onto their offers.
To your question, when this specifically happens, only Bregman knows for sure
Shifting trends
7:29
Do you notice that more and more teams are willing to wait on free agent signings and trades? Spring has become like a mini hot stove
Mark P
7:31
Players/agents and teams not budging on their valuations has led to this seeming increase in lingering staring contests, it's true.  I'd say this has largely always been in the case for free agents in general, but for lower-level FAs rather than guys nearer the top of the market

Will have no entrants in next years vote ?
Mark P
7:32
Beltran got enough of a bump this year that he'll probably get over the 75% line next year.

7:32
Is Jose Altuve a hall of gamer right now?  2300 hits plus all gold gloves, silver slugger awards and World Series appearances 2017 on?
Mark P
7:33
He's 100 percent a Hall of Famer.  Voters might give him a couple of years on the ballot as "punishment" for the sign-stealing scandal, but by the time Altuve is eligible for the vote, memories may have faded about that scandal
Expansion Team
7:33
What are some names you like for a team in Nashville or Salt Lake?
Mark P
7:33
Seems like "Stars" is the favorite for a Nashville team.  As for SLC, I'd go with the Salt Lake Peppers.
Lucas Shepard
7:34
Are the the Phillies the top suitor for at least Bregman or Arenodo
Mark P
7:35
Philly's got enough payroll on the books already that neither seems like an ideal fit.  Plus, the Phillies would likely have to move Bohm at virtually the same time.
Chat Curse
7:36
Bregman is about to sign
Mark P
7:37
lol, don't think this didn't occur to me after the Pressly trade last week.  But, we've got 90 minutes of chat banked thus far, that's pretty solid.
Rizzo
7:37
Am I done? One year deal? Giants?
Mark P
7:38
SF already has Wade as a lefty-swinging first baseman, so Rizzo would be a bit redundant.  It's hard to find a spot for Rizzo at this point in the winter, as so many teams have already addressed their 1B spots
Sad Reds Fan
7:38
Reds win the NLC if ____?
Mark P
7:39
Francona works his magic, and enough of the young players have the breakouts that were expected of them in 2024.
Angels fan
7:39
Perry Minasian said the Angels would be “aggressive” this offseason but haven’t signed a player to the major league roster since November? His definition of “aggressive” must be different than the fan’s?
Mark P
7:40
While i agree that the Angels could and should do more to help what is still a spotty roster, is this just a perception issue?  If the Angels have the exact same offseason but spread the moves out instead of handling all their business in November, would fans be any more or less satisfied?
Tony Clard
7:41
Does the fact that the Marlins have taken onvirtually no $$$ this offseason more or less say they are not worried about a grievance from the union..?
Mark P
7:42
Miami's got about $22MM to go before hitting the $105MM tax threshold. Since only the year-end tax number counts, there's lots of time for the Marlins to take on a salary dump of a contract during the season or at the deadline, as opposed to just this winter
Guest
7:43
I know it’s hoping, but Bregman to Az just because of a home seems like a stretch? To happen twice in one off season?
Mark P
7:44
Yeah, it's a stretch.  D'Backs would then probably look to trade Suarez, which would be trickier since teams would have leverage.
