Xander Bogaerts came into camp ten pounds lighter and injury free. I say he will be a top five shortstop in baseball by season’s end. Am I nuts?
Mark P
8:40
There are enough great shortstops in the game that "top five" is a tall order, but I wouldn't be shocked by a rebound year for X-Bo
Jays hope
8:40
Do you think the Jays can get an extension done for either Bichette or Guerrero ?  Why haven't they started talks with Bichette's agent yet ?
Mark P
8:42
To be frank, why WOULD they start talks with Bichette?  He's coming off a poor season but certainly views 2025 as a bounce-back year to re-establish his value. So he's not going to take a lowball offer from the Blue Jays, and the team is certainly not going to make a major nine-figure offer to a player coming off (dating back to 2023) eight months of injury-plagued, mediocre baseball.

Chances Arenado accepts a trade to the Tigers?  Package Tigers would pay ?
Mark P
8:43
Reading between the lines, it seems like Arenado doesn't have much/any interest in playing for the Tigers.

Are people sleeping on the Padres with the assumption they were tearing it down? Cease, King, Yu, Pivetta is a really good 1-4 and if AJ adds another hitter like he says, they wont be that far off their NLDS team last year.
Mark P
8:46
This is the other factor in the Padres' situation.....they feel like they can win in 2025.  They had the Dodgers on the ropes in the playoffs last year and might've won it all if they'd just gotten past the NLDS.  It could be that ownership (despite the internal strife) still wants to see this era through before looking to start selling or rebuilding.

”And baby you’ve got a stew going.”
Mark P

I feel like maybe this should've been my obscure Arrested Development joke all these years.  This is arguably the funniest line in a show loaded with funny lines.

8:48
Do you think the Red Sox would be interested in moving Ceddanne Rafaela to clear up some of their log jam?
Mark P
8:49
Other teams aren't going to be too keen to trade for a player coming off Rafaela's rough season, and with his sizeable contract
PhilsPhan
8:49
Am I the only one concerned with extensions for schwarber and realmuto becoming the Phillies circa 2010 again?
Mark P
8:50
The concerns are understandable.  But if I was in charge of the Phillies, I'd certainly be interested in locking up Schwarber and (given the catching market) probably JTR too.  Extending them at reasonable prices isn't the issue, it's getting more from the other spots on the roster
Though, to be fair, it's tougher to address those other spots with so many big salaries on the books
Reds fan Ryan
8:52
Reds will win 88 games and make playoffs, you'll see 😀  They won 77 games last year with a lot of injuries and also going 15-28 in 1 run games. With a better manager,  healthy seasons from Lodolo, Mcclain, and Friedl, this team will be better both offensively and defensively. Add to that the hiring of Francona, plus Greene and Elly taking the next step into superstardom, and an overall improved roster, and this is a good team.
Mark P
8:52
If all that happens, more power to the Reds!  I picked them to make the playoffs last year, so I can pretend I just wrote the year incorrectly
Sunday Night Music

What’s on the Sunday night playlist?

"For Tomorrow" by Blur
Bill
8:53
Is David Robertson going to retire or which team does he join?
Mark P
8:54
You'd think Robertson would fit nicely on a lot of rosters, and I still wouldn't rule out a return to Texas
Tigers/Jays
8:55
Growing up as a Jays fan, do you have any stories of the Tigers/Blue Jays rivalry of the 80’s and 90’s?
Mark P
8:56
I'm young (?) enough where the Tigers were never really the Blue Jays' primary rivals during my fandom.
Sam
8:57
Are you surprised Buck Farmer only got a minor-league deal?
Mark P
8:58
As noted earlier, relievers without big strikeout numbers tend to be overlooked by teams.  Farmer is a solid pitcher but teams probably view him as having a pretty limited ceiling.  Seems a little unfair to focus on the things he can't do when a durable, reliable arm like Farmer CAN do a lot of good things, but that's life

Favourite SNL skit?
Mark P
8:59
Andy Samberg's Digital Shorts, if those count as a single "recurring skit."  Their hit rate was incredibly high.  Beyond those, I'll also shout out Celebrity Jeopardy, the Denise Show, and the fake Totino's commercials
Winter sucks
9:02
How do the Royals improve their lineup? Do they trade a young prospect or do they hope Melendez will improve?
Mark P
9:03
I feel like I write this in every chat, but surely the Royals still have another outfield upgrade coming.  Going with MJ/Renfroe again just doesn't seem feasible, even with the wrinkle of Massey or India getting some LF time.
Orioles
9:04
It seems like Ryan O'Hearn is blocking playing time from guys like Kjerstad and Mayo. Any chance he has a short leash this season
Mark P
9:05
O'Hearn isn't the head-scratcher for me, but rather signing guys like Carlson or Laureano.  Steve Adams echoed this in another chat earlier this week, but it kind of seems like Baltimore is setting the table for a Kjerstad trade, since I'm not sure why they'd keep bringing in outfielders to cut into his playing time.

Greetings, Mark. As a Lifelong Pirate Fan, I can’t hide my frustration about the nearly barren off-season they’ve “assembled”. What do You think the chances are that they move QUICKLY to select one of the few proven available 1B Men remaining in the midst of Horwitz’s injury and muddled immediate future?
Mark P
9:08
If Horwitz misses "only" six weeks, I don't see the Pirates being too aggressive in getting a player who might (theoretically) be riding the bench pretty soon.  That's not in their nature, nor do they likely have the budget to make such a move

ms signed Polanco to play 3rd, why???? Disappointed Ms fan
Mark P
9:10
The thinking is that Polanco will get back to his old Twins form now that he's healthy.  But you're not wrong in being underwhelmed by that reunion.

Lot of SNL-related questions tonight, unsurprisingly.  Will Ferrell is right up there for me.
KC
9:12
Could KC get McCarthy or Thomas from AZ if they took Monty and some of the money?
Mark P
9:15
McCarthy no, since Arizona values him too highly to deal in as part of a salary dump.  Thomas probably, but he's hit so little in the majors that the Royals likely don't see him as much of an upgrade

Enough with SNL.  Thought this was a baseball chat!
