Arenado would play third, Paredes goes to 2B, and Altuve goes to LF on a seemingly regular basis.
Interestingly, it seems like the Astros are leaning towards using Altuve in left field with or without Arenado involved.

Will we keep Chris Taylor and what happens with Outman and pages
Mark P
9:37
Barring a huge comeback year, 2025 is surely Taylor's last year in Los Angeles.  The plan is probably to have Pages and (maybe) Outman get more playing time next season once Taylor and Conforto are gone.

Can the Diamondbacks win the west? Or would they end up as a Wild Card Team?
Mark P
9:37
I like Arizona's chances at a wild card, but topping the Dodgers is a tall order.

One trade AA wants back is murphy trade. His swing is soo long and he had an awful season.
Mark P
9:40
Too soon to write off Murphy, but that trade looks like a very clear win for the Brewers in hindsight.  Especially considering that Atlanta could've just kept Contreras and been set at the catcher position anyway.  (Notwithstanding the possibility that Contreras doesn't fully break out if he stays with the Braves rather than with the Brewers.)

Why are the Cards waiting until spring training to discuss Fedde and reengage on talks for Arenado? Seems to take some negotiation leverage away.
Mark P
9:42
Hey, it's Enrico Pallazzo!

Fedde isn't a big leverage situation since (once again...) teams always need pitching.  In the event of an injury, St. Louis might even have extra leverage in dangling Fedde to a team suddenly in dire need for rotation help.

The Cards have basically zero leverage in an Arenado trade anyway.  I wonder if that's why these new talks with Houston ended pretty abruptly.

Do you see the jays making a wild card spot?
Mark P
9:45
I feel like I've been so pessimistic about the Jays that I'm slightly underrating their chances to some extent.  Plenty of AL teams have big question marks, and it could be that 2024 was just a "season from hell" for basically every Jay except Guerrero.  If enough people bounce back, Santander keeps up his 2024 form, and maybe Gimenez turns back to the clock to 2022, Toronto could very well be back in the playoff mix.

When is the last time a team traded one of their core players at the deadline and then made it to the World Series that year?
Mark P
9:47
I feel like I'm overlooking something obvious, just because I'm about to cite a 21-year-old instance.  But, Boston trading Nomar in 2004 is the first one that leaps to mind.

Why does Arizona refuse to commit to Jordan Lawler?
Mark P
9:48
The plan seems to be for Lawlar to take over 3B for Suarez after 2025, so I don't think the Perdomo extension closes the door on Lawlar's DBacks future whatsoever.
9:49
Don't forget that Lawlar barely played last season due to injury, so the D'Backs want to see what he can do when he's back on the field.

Tigers have a real logjam in their infield with Torkelson, Keith, Baez, Jung, Vierling, Torres, Sweeney, Ibanez.
Mark P
9:52
I'm not sure I'd call this a logjam, exactly.  Baez hasn't been good for three years, Vierling can play the outfield, Detroit's DH spot is readily available to give people at-bats, and third base is open for platoon purposes.

Is Craig Kimbrel done?
Mark P
9:54
There hasn't been any buzz on Kimbrel this winter, and he faced an uphill battle in even getting a guaranteed contract given his age and how poorly he pitched in 2024.  It's not too late for him to land a deal (either on a low guarantee or even a minors contract) before Opening Day, but the clock is ticking
9:55
One possible scenario....Kimbrel waits until later in the season to sign, perhaps to try and avoid the late-season meltdowns that have plagued him in recent years.  Even last season, he was pitching pretty well until the second half.
Yankees
9:56
With Stanton out for a while do the Yankees look for a DH such as JD Martinez, Rizzo or Verdugo?  There lineup looks thin with no real solid 3rd baseman?  Do you think they have one more move before opening day?
Mark P
9:57
They'll probably wait to see just how badly Stanton might be injured or how long an IL stint might be, but yeah, bringing in a veteran (especially a familiar face like Verdugo or Rizzo) seems plausible
Carson Williams
9:57
Does he push Walls for opening day with a hot spring or is he destined for AAA for at-least half a year to prove the bat?
Mark P
9:58
Williams has barely played any Triple-A ball, so it's much more likely he shows up in the latter half of the season.  It'll be a nice problem for the Rays to have if, by that time, Kim is healthy and playing well at shortstop.

Are the A's primed to make a deadline aquisition this season? Maybe another bat to solidify the middle of the order, the outfield
Mark P
10:01
If the A's are actually contending, sure, I can see them bringing in some (less expensive) help

10:02
So as a braves fan I don't understand why  AA would not just come out and say "hey we have to reset the tax penalty " instead of commenting that payroll is expected to rise.  Thanks in advance
Mark P
10:04
It could be that "get under the tax line" is more a preference from ownership rather than a strict edict.  Like, if the Braves are in contention at the deadline and a somewhat pricey player becomes available in a trade, AA might the flexibility to bring them in as something of a final touch to the roster

As Jays fans recall, back in 2014, AA tied his hands at the deadline because he spent all of his available payroll space in the offseason.  Jays ownership wasn't willing to give him more to spend, and the lack of move really seemed to demoralize the team, leading to a post-deadline swoon
Verdugo
10:05
what is my problem ? OF needs exist, ...like KC for example
Mark P
10:05
Verdugo simply wasn't very good last season.  While a team like the Royals surely need outfield help, an argument can certainly be made that Verdugo isn't an upgrade over MJ or Renfroe.

Who will be the starting left fielder for the Pirates with Reynolds moving to right field?
Mark P
10:07
A Pham/Suwinski platoon, or maybe just Pham getting the majority of at-bats
in a de facto starting role

How is Jacob deGrom looking?  He's GOT to be ready to go this time, right ?
