Who am I to tell someone they should give up on their life's work?
Marky Mark
10:11
Who is the player you were most surprised that was not traded this offseason?
Mark P
10:11
Like, half a dozen Cardinals

Any chance that the Pirates sign a 1B? Rizzo probably too tall a request but they're really going into the season with what they have?
Mark P
10:13
Getting Heaney for such a relatively low price was a nice move, but it can be argued that landing a first baseman at that price (if possible) was a greater need.  But, like I mentioned earlier, the Pirates might be more open to now dealing from their younger pitching depth to land a controllable young bat

Was the Perdomo extension an overpay?
Mark P
10:16
Maybe slightly?  Not to an egregious extent however, since Perdomo is a solid player who might still have some higher ceiling to his game.

Hey Mark, thanks for the chat! Are you going to be heading to Japan next month for Cubs Dodgers series?
Mark P
10:17
Nope, but a trip to Japan is something I want to do at some point in my life.  And you'd better believe attending an NPB game or two is on the vacation checklist.

Mark Canha got a minor league deal, am I too crazy to think he could help a few teams and should waited a bit more for that chance?
Mark P
10:18
This deal seems like a nice fit for Canha.  He has a path to regular playing time, and he loved his previous stint in Milwaukee (which saw him play some of the best baseball of his career)

If the White Sox were going to take a bad contract for prospects, who might be a target?
Mark P
10:21
Given Reinsdorf's aversion to spending, I can see him refusing such moves as a matter of principle.

If the Sox were open to such moves, the sky's the limit, since basically every team has at least one contract they'd like to get off the books.  Now, attaching a premium prospect to such a contract is another story.

Diamondbacks end up doing well by the trade deadline, is that when we'll see one of Nelson or Pfaadt being dealt?
Mark P
10:24
Gallen, Kelly, and Montgomery are all going to be free agents next winter.  Very unlikely the D'Backs trade one of their young and controllable starters with so many holes already set to open up in the rotation

I watched Pressly today.  He looked good. Do you think he can close games?  Is the cubs bullpen in decent shape??
Mark P
10:27
For as much heat as Hoyer gets for his bullpen construction tactics, I think he's done a nice job of bolstering his relief corps this winter

Hi Mark. Would you consider Posey as an upgrade over Farhan? I’ve seen many people complain about Posey but he’s a rookie PBO and we should give him three years like we did to Farhan, right?
Mark P
10:29
Posey's been on the job for like five months, and you're asking for an evaluation already?!

Zaidi obviously didn't do a standout job as PBO, but it's also wrong to blame him for all the Giants' issues over the last several seasons.  Fans who expected Posey to swoop in and immediately lure a bunch of superstars to SF were bound to be disappointing at "only" signing Adames (who was a great get in his own right)

Looking good in one game of ST means nothing.

During my Spring Training trip last, uh, spring, I saw Kyle Stowers hit three homers in a single game against Detroit.  And then, during the 2024 season, Stowers hit....three homers in 209 big league plate appearances
Brewers Fan
10:32
What are the odds (assuming health) the Brewers could trade Yelich at the deadline if they aren't in striking distance? Would seem like a good time to get out if they could with an otherwise young core to build around
Mark P
10:33
Yelich is still owed $110.5MM over the last four years of his contract, he just turned 33, and he's coming off major back surgery.  Unless he has  2017-caliber numbers in the first half, I doubt there's be much of a trade market unless the Brewers ate a good chunk of that money

Is spring training too long in your opinion?
Mark P
10:34
Probably too long for position players, but pitchers simply need the build-up time.

Neither 1993 expansion team, the Rockies and the Marlins, has ever won their division in 32 seasons of trying. Do you think it’s possible or even likely either or both will make it to 50 years without a division title?
Mark P
10:35
It's kind of an odd statistical quirk more than anything.  Given the expanded playoff field, winning your division doesn't carry a lot of extra weight apart from the bye.  The Marlins could go 50 years without an NL East crown but still point to their two World Series banners.
10:36
We've hit two hours, so time to wrap things up.  Thanks for all the questions, and we'll be back for more next weekend!
