Not at all.  All it takes it one injury for a team to start checking around for more pitching.

If Tijuan Walker has a strong Spring will there be a trade market for him. How much $ would the Phillies need to eat ?
Mark P
7:16
Walker is owed $32MM over the final years of his deal, so basically no matter how well he pitches this spring, Philadelphia will have to cover the vast majority of that deal.

Plus, if you're a team in need of starting pitcher, why not just sign the aforementioned Kyle Gibson or someone instead of working out some trade with the Phils for Walker?

Thoughts on Acuña this year? Odds he’ll get back to MVP form?
Mark P
7:17
Coming back from a torn ACL is so tough, yet Acuna already did it once to great success.  Can't rule him out for that reason alone.

For other players unsigned like Iglesias, Martinez and Rizzo, is it dollar asks or a concern that once on the roster they'll not be comfortable with part-time-ing, or to FO think all three are shot?
Mark P
7:20
Those three players have some differences in their situations, but the general commonality is that teams probably don't want to lock them into roster spots.  With the Mets and Iglesias, for instance, the reason they opted for Madrigal on a split deal is because Madrigal could then be easily moved down to Triple-A.  Whereas if you sign a vet to a guaranteed deal, you're obligated to give him a shot on the active roster, and then you're throwing money away if he doesn't pan out

Paul Skenes is the best pitcher in baseball this year.  Agree or disagree?
Mark P
7:22
Disagree, just because there are plenty of great pitchers and because it's only Skenes' second year.

However, it is a testament to Skenes' ability that if he did reach "best pitcher in the sport" status in 2025, I wouldn't be surprised

Is a Arenado trade to the Yankees more or less possible than it was 2 weeks ago?
Mark P
7:23
Not any more possible, and I'd give it pretty close to a zero percent chance. The Yankees don't seem to be willing to stretch the budget much further, and especially not to the extent of taking on what would be a substantial portion of Arenado's contract.
7:25
Plus there's the wrinkle of whether or not Arenado would even approve a trade at this point, or if he just wants to get on with his season rather than uproot his family at this relatively late date in the winter.

I forget who made this observation, but someone made the good point that in New York's case, Arenado might have particular reservations about essentially taking the job of his good friend LeMahieu

7:26
How long do the Mariners wait until they trade a pitcher to get a major upgrade in their hitting?
Mark P
7:27
Things would have to get pretty dire (or, even more dire?) on the hitting front, and even then, that scenario presents the problem of the M's making a trade out of desperation

7:28
Out of Roupp, Harrison and Birdsong who is the front runner  so far for the 5th spot?
Mark P
7:28
Have to think it's Harrison's job to lose
Bobby Cox
7:29
Why didn't we attempt to sign Minter. And to let him go to Mets..?
Mark P
7:29
The Braves know Minter's health better than anyone, so perhaps they have good reason to be wary coming off surgery

Am I just being a homer thinking the Brewers offense is going to be a lot better than people think? If you take the half season Chourio spent figuring it out and Yelich spent out, they could make up for Adames power and I still think Garrett Mitchell is star in the waiting. Add in Turang and Contreras and that lineup could get deep real quick.
Mark P
7:31
Losing Adames is obviously a blow, but I agree that Milwaukee's lineup is underrated.  People seem to forget that the Crew were at least within the top 10 in most offensive categories in 2024, so it's not like Adames was a one-man band

7:33
What's the plan with him back to pitching?  More off days where he's noting the lineup at all?
Mark P
7:33
LA will want to keep him in the lineup as much as possible, but yeah, a few maintenance days are probably inevitable as he works his way back.
Jackson Holliday
7:34
What kind of year do I have Mark? Do I even stay in the show all year? Am I not gonna have a "breakout" year for another 4 or 5 seasons?
Mark P
7:35
I predict a solid season for Holliday, if not the kind of superstar year people seem to expect from top prospects right off the bat.

7:36
How many starts do you figure Verlander gets this year?  And when he goes down, does that make room for Birdsong, Roupp...other?
Mark P
7:37
The Giants have some depth available in the (inevitable) event of injuries, or struggles from their veterans.  Despite his rough 2024, I would think Verlander can still deliver a relatively normal bounce-back season, tossing 140 innings or so
I'm kind of penciling in a missed month due to one or two minor injuries

When do you think we will see Stanton in a baseball game?
Mark P

I'm guessing some time in May?  Hard to figure at this early date.

Is the Pirates main move of the offseason still coming? Are they rolling with Pham as their everyday outfielder or an outside acquisition possible still?
Mark P
7:40
Pittsburgh is probably set, barring injury.

Who has the better year Strider or Mcclanahan?
Mark P
7:43
McClanahan, since I have more confidence he'll pitch more of the year
Jared Jones
7:45
I know everyone loves Skenes, but nobody talks about me. I also throw heat (101 mph) and have more movement on my fastball. Gimme some love too Mark P!
Mark P
7:45
Jared Jones, heck of a pitcher!

7:46
In your opinion, which team is most improved this season?
Mark P
7:46
Red Sox. Some of the improvement will come from within, but the Bregman/Buehler/Crochet moves will all make that team distinctly better on paper
Drew
7:47
Is it crazy to think that if things break reasonably well for the Nats - Wood, Crews, Abrams, Gore all have step forward seasons, the improved defense helps the pitching staff's ERA get closer to its FIP, DeJong and Bell are solid major league contributors - that they could claim a wild card spot this season?
