Stranger things have happened.  The Nationals' issue is that even if all these things happen on their end, they might still need one or two of the more clear-cut contenders to fall off for Washington to sneak into a wild card spot
Hardest Division
7:49
Is it the AL East or NL West?
Mark P
7:49
Which is the tougher division?

NL West (47.6% | 273 votes)

AL East (52.4% | 301 votes)

Total Votes: 574
Dollander
7:50
Word is he might break camp.  What should be expected of a rookie in coors?  Can he possibly have an era under 4?
Mark P
7:51
Dollander has all of 118 pro innings under his belt, and only 48 of those were as high as Double-A ball.  So it would be a bold move on the Rockies' part to put him on the Opening Day roster.

Due to Colorado's track record with pitchers, I can't really give them the benefit of the doubt when it comes to development.  There might be too much risk in bringing Dollander up too quickly, especially in an environment like Coors Field.
Mookie Betts
7:53
I am the best outfielder in the game and a proven failure as a SS. Why am I allowing and or pushing for a re-do on this failed experiment? It makes ZERO sense for too many reasons to list..
Mark P
7:55
"Proven failure" is a little harsh.  Betts' stance is likely that he feels he can handle the position if given enough prep time to properly make the change, and the Dodgers share this confidence
Pirates
7:56
If you were Nutting, would you have fired Derek Shelton and Ben Cherington by now? It’s been five seasons without even a winning record?
Mark P
7:57
If I'm Bob Nutting, my first move is to let Cherington spend more money so I can more fully evaluate my GM's performance.

The Pirates needed a full rebuild, and you knew it was going to take a while.  This being said, it has been five years now, and the Bucs are still in "well, if things break right..." phase, with only a couple of their younger talents looking like clear blue-chippers.
7:58
It's probably inaccurate to describe 2025 as a true make-or-break year for the Pirates, but they could badly use at least a winning record to show that they're on the right track
Bay area sports
8:00
With the A’s out of the Bay Area, do you think that the og A’s fans will convert to Giants fans because SF is still in the Bay and they are a hometown team for many people or is the A’s fan base just going to follow them to Vegas?
Mark P
8:01
I've never had one of my favorite teams change cities, but my first reaction would probably be to stop following them entirely, out of pure spite.

Can't speak for Oakland's fans, of course, and I don't know if some/many would just migrate over to the Giants as the next closest option for big league baseball
Henry Dodger
8:03
Given A.J. Preller's propensity to wheel and deal, the Padres' silent off-season has to be one of the winter's big surprises, yes?
Mark P
8:04
Yes and no.  I think the Roki Sasaki chase took up a lot of the Padres' time, since it wasn't until he made his decision that SD could pick a lane or not over what to do with their starting pitchers.  Plus, it seems like the Padres were working within pretty narrow payroll parameters.

Have you heard anything about Marco Gonzales ?. Hasn't he recovered from his injury ? He is waiting for another team to pay him $9 mill to go on the DL in a few months ?
Mark P
8:09
Gonzales had his surgery in early September, and the timeframe was 9-12 months for recovery.  So any interested teams will wait longer to monitor his health before making any offers
A Fan
8:10
Most likely to toss a no-no this season? Framber? Skenes? Who? Gimme your top 3 Mark!
Mark P
8:11
Let's go with Eduardo Rodriguez, Mitchell Parker, and some guy you've never heard of who has yet to reach the big leagues.
Literally any guesses are valid here, given the random nature of no-hitters.

If anything, the realistic answer is to guess which teams are more likely to throw combined no-nos, rather than picking individual starters
Tom
8:13
What are the odds the Twins will be sold before the season ends.
Mark P
8:13
A sale will very likely still happen, it'll just take longer than expected since the Ishbias were seen as the most logical favorites
Nick

What do you think about Kieran Culkin winning the first Oscar Award?
Mark P
8:15
"A Real Pain" is an excellent movie, and Culkin was great in it.

But, one of my Oscar pet peeves is when someone wins a "supporting" Academy Award for what is obviously a leading or co-leading role.
Cutter
8:15
Do you think the Angels will be sold next season?
Mark P
8:15
Arte Moreno seemed to close the door on the idea of selling the team, after testing the waters.
Underwhelmed
8:16
What’s your thoughts on the Padres outlook this season? I have them 4th in the division. Took a step backwards while the rest of the division stepped forwards. Am I being too harsh?
Mark P
8:17
I'd put them behind the Dodgers and Diamondbacks, and battling for a wild card.
Jed’s agent
8:18
What needs to happen for Jed to get an extension? Get past the first round? I’m irrationally concerned Ricketts might reboot just so expectations/costs are lowered.
Mark P
8:19
Only Cubs ownership knows for sure if they're willing to keep Hoyer, but it's fair to guess that making the playoffs would go a long way to getting him a new deal.  Though, keep in mind, it didn't seem like the Cubs would move on from David Ross until they very suddenly hired Counsell
Ike Melias
8:20
The Orioles have more wins than anyone in the AL over the last two years but fans are still upset. What gives?
Mark P
8:21
No playoff progress will tend to leave fans unsettled.
Chris
8:22
How likely does David Robertson wait until mid season to sign until there’s interested contenders? Like when Pedro signed with PHI in 2009
Mark P
8:22
Still surprising to me that Robertson is available.  Waiting until later in the season carries some risk since it's a disruption to his usual offseason routine.
Nolan Arenado
8:23
Will I still be in a Cardinal uniform come August 1? What is the soonest you think a trade is plausible?
Mark P
8:24
A midseason trade would be interesting, and can't be ruled out.  The way Arenado has cited his lack of interest in uprooting his family, doing it abruptly in the middle of a year probably doesn't have much appeal, yet maybe he'd jump at the chance to join a contender in one of his desired spots
Kyle
8:26
You’re Mike Elias. Ownership tells you that you have 24 hours to trade Heston Kjerstad or you’re fired. Can’t include anyone else in the deal. Which GM is your first call?
Mark P
8:27
My first call is probably to my agent telling him to look for other job offers, since why would I work under these conditions?

My next step is to make what is probably my umpteenth call to the Mariners.
Abrams
8:27
Given how CJ Abrams season ended last year, is there any reprehension from the nats? Is he still valued as one of the key players for their future?
Mark P
8:28
Publicly, everything seems to have been smoothed over, so there shouldn't be any concerns if it was just one isolated incident of a missed curfew or something
Cards
8:29
If the cardinals fall flat on their faces could guys like Burleson or Donovan be made available?
