Should i be scared that none of our projected starters started more than 20 games last year and even the ones currently on the IL
Mark P
9:15
Yeah, but the Dodgers also have roughly 54 pitchers on the roster, so they'll be fine

Why do I keep hearing all winter about trading Casas? The kid can hit bombs and play a decent 1st base. is he really that "out there" that the Sox would move him?
Mark P
9:16
I think it's less about Casas' personality and more about the fact that first base is a relatively easy position to fill.  Boston might even have Devers right there as the next 1B if they can convince him to change positions.  If the Sox can land another good young player (ideally a pitcher) for Casas, I think they'd be quite open to a trade.

Mayo and Povich enough of a Godfather deal for Cease?
Mark P
9:18
It is, but there's also zero chance the Orioles would make that offer for one year of Cease

Do the Nats finally post their first winning season since the World Series?
Mark P
9:19
.500 is a realistic goal for the Nationals, since a lot would have to break right for them to make the playoffs.  A winning record isn't nothing, and it would be a great signal that the rebuild is truly over that the club is ready to start properly competing (and spending) next offseason

Its way to early to think about this but will I finish my career with the Astros and will I be in their price range for a new extension or will I leave them after 2028?
Mark P
9:23
He'll be 31 when his current contract is up, and assuming Jim Crane sticks with his six-year ceiling on contracts, a new deal would keep Alvarez in Houston through his age-37 campaign.  Like I noted earlier, Alvarez is currently posting Cooperstown-level numbers, so he's certainly the kind of major talent the Astros would seemingly want to keep around as a franchise icon.

That said, Alvarez is already inching towards being a DH-only player now, so it'll all depend on how his bat ages.  If he's still hitting like this by 2027, the Astros should certainly have interest in another contract, and Alvarez's defensive limitations might make him open to just a six-year pact

Is there a projected IP limit for Clay Holmes? I saw he was a SP in minors, but he barely passed 100 IP the few years he was a SP there. Im curious if the Mets have a gameplan with him since they signed him as a SP.
Mark P
9:27
After he was signed, Holmes said he wanted to pitch 160 innings in 2025, which seems pretty ambitious.  Since the Mets surely want Holmes healthy and ready for an extended postseason run, it definitely seems possible he might have a start skipped here or there in order to preserve his arm, or in case he starts showing any fatigue

Back to the Orioles for a sec, it seems like they could use an interesting arm like Spencer Turnbull who could pitch in whatever role they need over another #5 starter like Gibson who’d only block someone like Cade Povich. Any intel on why Turnbull hasn’t signed? What kind of deal does he get at this point?
Mark P
9:29
Probably a one-year deal for $3-4MM at this point.  It's odd that Turnbell hasn't ended up anywhere yet, and perhaps even stranger that there haven't even been any real rumors about any interested teams.

Framber Valdez

What are the odds of me being traded in July this year?
Mark P
9:32
Since I expect the Astros to be in contention again this year, I don't think Valdez is going anywhere

I am hearing Cole's imaging, says surgery is needed.  Does that mean TJ?  if so they better not do the dumb, let;s do a PRP and wait 4-6 weeks then start throwing and then get TJ in May or June and then that risks all of 2026 as well.  We ahve to stop with the TJ is 12-16 months and people thinking it can be closer to the 12 months, it is really 16-18 months for full recovery and he is 35 not 25, so it will be longer for an older player
Mark P
9:33
It's Cole's arm, and surely he wants to take every step possible to avoid a TJ surgery if at all possible.  Can't blame him or any pitcher for wanting to explore all options and take as much as time as possible before undergoing such a career-altering procedure

How dumb will the Cubs look if they don’t extend Kyle Tucker?
Mark P
9:38
I don't think the Cubs' trade package was so over-the-top that it was too much for what might be one year of Tucker's services.  Following that "all-in for 2025" move with something of a half-measures offseason is a little strange, but Chicago is currently my pick to win the NL Central

The Phillies and Jays essentially swapped closers (without a trade).  Both have injury concerns, but who do you think has the better year?
Mark P
9:40
Very much a coin flip, but I'll narrowly go with Hoffman because he was also better than Romano (if not by much) in 2023 when both were healthy.

9:42
Who do you think wins the LF/DH job in San Diego? Would they consider cutting Heyward or Joe if one of the younger guys are clearly better?
Mark P
9:42
Heyward or Joe probably gets shifted over into the DH role if someone emerges to take the left field job

Predictions for me this season please Mark..

I'll be making my Official 2025 Predictions closer to Opening Day, as a guard against possible injuries.

Heard Vlad Jr. might favor going to the Angels this upcoming offeason, since his dad has ties still to the team, anything to that?
Mark P
9:45
One would imagine Vlad would prefer to play for a team in better position to contend, but if the money is right, who knows?

Is Aranda the full time DH in Tampa or will it be a platoon?
Mark P
9:45
Rays will cycle a lot of guys through the DH spot, though Aranda should get the bulk of time on paper

What sort of market does Mike Yastrzemski have next season as a FA? Thanks Mark.
Mark P
9:48
Yaz turns 35 in August, and is a solid but unspectacular platoon player who can play all three outfield positions.  Assuming he posts his usual numbers in 2025, a one-year deal in the $5-6MM range seems like maybe his ceiling?
9:49
Yaz is one of those veteran players that most teams would like to have as a useful roster piece, but aren't super-willing to pay to have, if that makes sense.  It wouldn't be a shock to see him squeezed on the market next winter, like so many other mid-tier veterans on his level
Casey
9:51
Any chance Baty or Marte get swapped for some pitching?
Mark P
9:52
Baty has way more of a market, even if he hasn't gotten things going at the MLB level yet.  But, the Mets aren't going to move Baty for just any pitcher, since his prospect value is still pretty high

Does the Rays playing in a retrofitted single-A stadium rather than DBAP seem like a missed opportunity to experiment with a MLB franchise in Carolina? Or is that just me?
Mark P
9:54
Moving the whole big league operation to Durham for an indefinite period of time is way more disruptive than staying in Tampa at the Stein.  Given that the Rays had to move quickly to adjust to these unusual circumstances, it makes sense that they would just stay closer to home.
